| I know I shouldn't let it bother me Hi, I'm pretty much just a lurker on YT but somebody said something today that really irked me... I have a 9-10 pound Yorkie that I rescued from a backyard breeder. She is 7 years old and has had at least 2 litters. She looks like what I have always thought of as a typical, but not show standard Yorkie.... Sooo this evening an acquaintance distainfully told me that I had a very cute yorkie mix... I told her she was full yorkie and she sort of rolled her eyes.. lol. I don't know why but it chapped my hide. Yorkies, like all dogs come in a range of sizes... My dog growing up was a miniature schnauzer that actually was conformation size; those are way rarer than a conformation size Yorkie, but you never hear people say "oh your schnauzer weighs more than such and such so it must be a mix"... What's the deal with that? In the grand scheme of things I know it doesn't really matter. An awesome dog is an awesome dog, and I purposely got a bigger more sturdy yorkie for practical reasons, but ugh, it still bothers me!!! |

| And there is probably nothing that you could have said that would have changed her mind. Just snuggle the dog and tell him that he's a "Yorkie, yorkie, yorkie!" |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You have the exact right attitude...and clearly the "friend" does not. I gotta ask, would a real friend roll her eyes at you like that, when discussing something you truly LOVE???

| Welcome to YT, I know it's up setting to hear someone suggest your dog is not pure breed simply based on size, I've gone through it for 35+ years. All my girls were bigger girls 9Lbs, 13 Lbs, my last was a whopping 17 Lbs. ppl are use to seeing the smaller yorkies. My now adopted boy is 12 lbs, he sports a puppy cut, yesterday I was at the vet, sitting next to a girl maybe 16 y/o. Cody was flirting with her, ya, know, batting his eye lashes, he does that around the ladies lol. she was petting him then asked me what kind of dog was he, I say yorkie, but a bigger yorkie, she says oh he must be a silky, I just smiled. You get use to it, you know what your baby is, you love your baby, what other ppl think does not matter, they are uneducated on yorkies. Several months ago again at the vet an elderly man comes in carry a tiny crate, sees me and Cody,he's looking and looking at Cody, then asked me what breed he was, I say a large yorkie, he tell me in this crate he had a 3.5 yorkie, says he never saw such a big yorkie, I tell him my last yorkie was 17 lbs, he says are your sure it was a yorkie lol. Even ppl with yorkies don't know they can come is all sizes. There are so many ppl breeding mixes today if someones yorkie is over standard size now they think it has to be a mix. Ignore these ppl. It's not worth getting upset over what uneducated ppl think. You love her and that's all that matter......Thank you for rescuing this precious lil girl

| Our first Yorkie grew to be 10 pounds. His mom was 8lbs and his father was 6lbs. Whenever people told me that he was too big to be a "real" yorkie my response was always the same. " Well, the extra pounds are from love.....and by the way, what is a real yorkie?" That usually started everyone laughing - and no hard feelings. Oh, and by the way, the last two pounds were definitely from love |

| I have an eleven month old pure breed Yorkie, she weighs 2 1/2 pounds and almost everyone asks me what breed she is ! So my guess is most people either don't know one breed for another or there are so many mix now it's hard to tell. So unless you are showing your Yorkie and the judge can't tell it's a Yorkie (LOL) what does it matter what people think !!! |

| Thanks for the welcome! Someday I will post pics of Izzy when I figure out how to resize them on my phone . Before I got Izzy I was under the impression that bigger yorkies were actually silkies, but who really knows right? Unless you can trace any dogs linniage through the AKC or UKC there's no telling what might be thrown in the mix. Yorkies are a very common (and lucrative) breed and really have to be selectively breed to keep them small, so anyone breeding them without regard to size which is pretty much anyone breeding to sell and not show, is going to end up with larger dogs.. For someone to say my dog's not a yorkie because she's too big is just dumb. This chick claims to have been a vet tech at some point in her life, so you'd think she would be a little more sensitive and educated. Anywhoo, I wish that there was a breed class for bigger yorkies for those of us who actually prefer a slightly larger more robust dog. Give big yorkies their cred! Lol |

YT 1000 Club Member | Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Try not to let it bother you too much. I have a 9 year old Yorkie who weighs 7 lbs. He is at the upper end of standard size, and he is beautifully colored as a Yorkie and people will still ask me if he is a mix. Then I have 2 Yorkie mix puppies who I know are a mix as I know both their parents because a friend of mine owns them. People argue with me when I tell them they are a Yorkie mix and insist I must be mistaken as they look pure bred. They are both 7 1/2 lbs at 6 months old. Some people just don't know what they are talking about. Welcome and don't take it to heart when people don't know what they are talking about.

BUT he's THE most loving, totally gorgeous, well-behaved, loyal little boy that I've ever, EVER had the pleasure of 'owning' in 50+ years.... 'Over here' most Yorkies are so, so much bigger than then the teensie ones that I've grown to know and love on YT...just enjoy and love to bits your special little Izzy...oh, and welcome to YT! Sally + Harry xx

| Piper is 9 1/2 lbs--the perfect size for me. I think it's kind of odd that most of the people that comment about Piper not being a 'full' Yorkie are with friends, dog-less, and are several feet away from us. Even on Piper's vet papers, she's listed as "silky," but my veterinarian of 20 plus years said from day one that Piper is definitely all yorkie. Like you, I don't give a damn what people say, but their haughty, know-it-all attitude is irritating. I'll also say that every single time a fellow yorkie owner approaches, they come all the way, ask for permission, and every, every time comment on what a cute little yorkie Piper is...Then if possible, they show pictures of their little ones and always we have a conversation comparing notes! I find that true Yorkie lovers and/or owners are classy, kind, and caring; their comments are always positive. |

| I will never understand why some people have a need to label, define, and assess other people's pets like a judge. Love your baby and don't worry what anyone else has to say. Being a proud momma, I understand it can be difficult sometimes to shrug it off.

| That's exactly what I'm talking about!!! Thank you for kind compliments and support. I'd like to act a bit coy and humble, but in truth, I think Piper is the cutest thing ever-in-the-universe--and everyday I ask her why this is, to which I believe we've reached the conclusion: because she's a little Piper-girl. For all Piper has given me, I think the best thing is my connection to all of you, whom I respect, admire, and even kinda love some! |

| Similar yet slightly different: I am training my kiddos 9 lb yorkie mix to be a service dog. I have many people look at me questioning, "HE is a service dog??" Yes, that is what his vest, collar tag, do not pet tag, and id vest badge all say. He wears all this identification when out working and he is trained to public access standards (finishing up advanced training now). Then of course, I hear, "I have never seen a service dog so small!" I had one person ask me if he is tether training (to restrain kiddo, 13 y/o 76 lbs, from running)....LOL. I would certainly hope/pray a 9 lb dog will never have tether training in their future career . My kiddo is not a runner, or I would never hook her to a 9 lb dog. Most people cannot tell he has a back up hook actually to her (it is discrete) to back up in case she drops the leash. I try to view these as teaching opportunities (when I have the patience), rather than letting the questions bother me. But ya know, I have a special needs kiddo, so not much I hear surprises me anymore and even less upsets me. Still, I figure less ignorance in the world is better!
