Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I have Healthy Paws for my kiddos (used to have PetPlan). I like that HP has an annual deductible vs. a per-incident deductible. They do your claims very fast!

| Insurance I have Trupanion, very happy with it. Premium does not increase with age. If you get this after doing your research, I would pay the extra to get zero deductible. Please do it early before any pre existing conditions. Good luck. This is a complex decision, and we have to carefully compare apples with apples! |

| Would a previous broken leg be considered a pre existing condition? I'm concerned that the leg may break again and I was wondering if anyone knew if that would be covered. |

| Broken leg Sorry this happened to your baby and I hope it does not happen again! If the same leg broke again though I would think they would not cover it, you know how insurance companies are! You could ask your vet or even call the insurance of your choice and check. They will want medical records from your vet, so they will know about it. Perhaps others here will know from their experiences? |

| I had Pet Plan but cancelled it, I felt really screwed by them. It's such a long story but they look for any little comment in the vet history to deny a claim. I had good blood work on Lola and no known health issues. My vet thought and said she was very healthy. Then last year her CK number was high or at least to me and my vet high, (this was the first blood test AFTER I had gotten the insurance). Vet said it could be due to a heart muscle strain. Lola plays very hard, runs like the wind, has a lot of hair and pants and gets hot when playing. My husband thinks that was normal, but I had mentioned the panting to the vet about a year or two prior to the CK number being slightly elevated. My vet also thought panting during play was normal. So since I had insurance both my vet and I felt heart problems were worth ruling out. So I went to a specialist who then told me the number was not that high and gave me the option of still having the heart scan, because I wanted to know and also because I had insurance I had the scan. So my bill was around $500.00. Everything turned out normal. But Pet Plan denied the claim, saying it was a pre existing condition, I protested and my vet wrote a letter, it was denied again, why because the notes in my vet history from several years back indicated I commented that I thought Lola panted hard while playing!!!!!! Give me a break I am not a vet and do I really know enough to know what is over panting or normal panting, yet they used this to say it was pre existing condition. I believe for the insurance I only needed a year of records yet dummy me and my vet gave them all the records. So word to the wise when getting insurance only give them the absolute min you need to and get a print out of your vet records first and go over it with a fine tooth comb to see if anything negative has every been said by you or your vet. Now I have no insurance and am contemplating what to do, I feel like I wasted about $800.00 paying insurance premiums. Since I most likely can afford what might come down the pike in the future I think I will probably just save my cash and take a chance. Yet I have thought about starting over with a new vet or talking to my vet about starting me on a new record like Lola is a new patient but I am not exactly sure which way I will go

| if I recall when I got insurance and especially with yorkies Pet Plan required a special history on the legs before you could get coverage on that, the other parts of the body they were not so strict on but they singled out the legs, most likely because so many yorkies have luxating patellas.

It could be fraud to act like your dog is new with your vet. It's better to see if another company would also exclude that issue that you had problems with. For example, if you go w/ Embrace, you can fax in all your records and ask for the medical review. If you don't like what they say, you can cancel the policy and get a refund if you have this done in their time frame which i think was 30 days.

I do like your idea of checking with them first before spending a lot of money on a plan. I would also be curious if they viewed the info differently than pet plan did, thanks for the suggestion

| I have Trupanion for Guinness. I got it right after we adopted him a year ago. He was adopted from a rescue and had no pre-existing vet records when we got him except for the work the rescue had done (dental, vaccines, etc.). I just took him in for his annual check and as expected he needed another dental. The vet said it appeared a couple of teeth would need extraction and he thought Trupanion should cover that. I told him I was led to believe dentals were not covered and he said yes the dental cleaning would not be but extractions due to periodontal disease should be. We submitted a preapproval for a "worst case scenario" just in case and they approved it! Thank god we did...he had the procedure done on Tuesday and a LOT of teeth were removed...it was worse than we expected but they covered everything except the $60 cleaning portion and 10% of the entire procedure. It came to $908 total and they paid $760 of it! I could not have been happier about it...mainly because Guinness was under the best care, they did x-rays which revealed underlying issues. Anyway, he is doing great and I would not have thought this would be covered as I thought it would fall under dental. I pay more monthly to have a zero deductible but now am very happy I made the choice I did. Being faced with a huge bill versus a monthly fixed amount to assure he gets his needs met is worth it for us!

I also was thinking Donna that a usual question to ask is if your pet has been insured before - I am with Trupanion for Dara she has been insured since 8wks old. They do ccover genetic diseases and cancer treatments and optional riders for a whole lot of stuff as well - physio, medications, prescription food, chiro, chemo, stem cell therapy etc etc. No lifetime limitation no disease limitation no annual claim limit. The kicker is the deductible is per disease condition - but if something follows from that disease condition - that disease would be covered without the deductible.

Embrace does not insure pets in Canada - what would have been your second choice for your 14yr old?
