I also was thinking Donna that a usual question to ask is if your pet has been insured before -

I am with Trupanion for Dara she has been insured since 8wks old. They do ccover genetic diseases and cancer treatments and optional riders for a whole lot of stuff as well - physio, medications, prescription food, chiro, chemo, stem cell therapy etc etc. No lifetime limitation no disease limitation no annual claim limit. The kicker is the deductible is per disease condition - but if something follows from that disease condition - that disease would be covered without the deductible.
