| Yorkie theft on the Rise~Especially in Detroit, MI area Hey Guys.... I wanted to share this story with you all. This literally happened in my town I live in. This is much closer to the Detroit boarder than I am. I live in a little nook of Dearborn Heights...but this is so sad. One of my girlfriends said the lady left her dog in the car for 20 minutes or so. I don't know if that is true....but how sweet that someone matched this ladies $500 reward to make it $1000.00 to return the dog. It's definitely worth more to return it than to sell it....so hopefully whomever took it will give it back. I've got mixed feelings on the reward. On one hand, I would do anything to get my dog back. On the other hand, is it encouraging people to steal dogs in hopes of getting a reward? I can't say I wouldn't do the same thing in her shoes though....if someone stole one of my babies, Id go to the end of the earth to get them back. Either way, I pray this lady gets her yorkie back....and this is a good reminder to NEVER EVER leave your yorkie unattended. It only takes a second for someone to take them!! | I have a friend who has Yorkies. One of hers got away through a broken gate. She canvassed the neighborhood for several days. She talked to a man in his front yard who swore he hadn't seen her dog. The next day, walking past the same man's house, she heard barking coming from his back yard. She looked over the fence and discovered her dog in his back yard. She didn't call the police. I would have. The man clearly intended to keep her dog. My friend is lucky to have found her dog. Everybody loves Yorkies, and many unscrupulous individuals wouldn't have any second thoughts about taking one if the opportunity presented itself.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I am thinking of getting a Beware Of Dog sign to put on my gate. I do believe that would deter a stupid idiot from coming into my yard. My Yorkies are fearless but little. We have to be careful and never leave our dogs in cars. People know Yorkies can be expensive and they will take them and sell them. Or just steal them. I am sick of people not respecting other people and their stuff. I know that the Lord sees all and they will get what they deserve in the end. |

| This is one of my biggest fears about my Teasell. She's a runner and really does not respond to well when being called. My fear about this is so bad I would never leave her in my fenced in backyard alone. Yorkies have become so popular now and I guess some people just don't think right will steal one rather then going and buying one or rescue one through a yorkie group. |

| When I visited an acquaintance a few years ago, the guy would always get after his pit bull puppy for greeting me at the door. I assumed he wanted the dog to be a protection dog and didn't want it to be friendly to strangers. A few months ago, a friend of mine got a yorkie....well, his girlfriend did but he would often watch it. I was so excited. I gave it all of Ricky's clothes that were too small, told him about harnesses instead of leashes and got him to get his dog on a decent brand of food. When I would come over, the dog was always skiddish. I assumed he was like my dog Princeton. Prince is scared of strangers as well. I wish he wasn't as it's embarassing to say "please don't try to pet my dog, he's scared and may bite." But as a responsible dog owner, I have to. Anyways....one day, after several visits, I bent down and the little yorkie came up to me and sniffed my hand and didn't run away. I was elated and shared my excitement with the owner and asked if i could pet him....I typically don't pet someones dog without asking first as you never know if they are aggressive. The owner quickly told me that if his girlfriend was ever around, please don't ever touch the dog as she would get mad. She doesn't want the dog to be friendly with anyone but immediate family. I didn't understand why, as I want a dog who loves everyone. He explained that they don't want it to be friendly with strangers because people steal dogs in his neighborhood. He didn't want someone to be able to call the dog and have it come to them and disappear. I now respect the guys wishes and don't pet his dog. Once he explained it, I somewhat understood why he felt the way he did. I am still not sure if I agree with it though. If the dog ever got away, nobody would ever be able to catch it to return it to him. The dog would most likely become dinner for all of the starving, wild dogs running around Detroit. On top of that, it would be a nightmare at the groomer and vets.... Ricky was a runaway and it took the rescue a month to trap him in the cold month of November in Michigan...because he would not come to them. I don't know how he survived, but he was severely malnourished and was a mess. IMO, the key to not letting someone steal your dog isn't making them afraid of strangers....instead, you need to watch them at all times when they are outside....and not leave them unattended in public places and vehicles. My dogs are never left unattended outside. I don't have a fenced in yard so they are always on leashes....and even if I had a fenced in yard, I would still be outside whenever they were out. I also don't leave them in a car by themselves. Heck, I am too afraid they could fall while trying to look out a window and hurt themselves...not just worried about them getting dog-napped I understand there are different rules in different neighborhoods and I don't think any less of the guy. I was just a bit taken back that people want their dogs to be afraid of people, when I've worked so hard to try to make my dogs comfortable with others. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience where people want their dogs to be afraid of everyone but them?!? Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 10-15-2014 at 11:51 AM. |

| I have a fenced in yard but I am always out there...it's not a bad idea to get a lock put on your gate. I don't have one not (a lock) but I think I will have my handyman do what he needs to to make that happen! I know that it's not a total deterrent but it is a deterrent. Someone has to be out there with bolt cutters. |

| Socialization is so important that I can't imagine encouraging my dogs not to be friendly or confident with people if they are going to have a life beyond my front door. If someone lived in a questionable neighborhood I rather encourage them not to leave their dogs alone in a backyard or locked in a car.

| I'm not surprised. I'm originally from Detroit. And I remember plenty of times growing up I would hear of even some large breed dogs stolen from peoples yards, homes or yards. Detroit already has a very challenging reputation and this doesn't help the people that are doing well and the things that are going good for the city. I'll be home for the holidays and I had already planned on leaving Emma here. I friend of mine actually found a lost yorkie in her driveway yesterday (in Detroit). She's hoping to find the owners because he looked to be healthy and well taken care of despite roaming the city streets.

| This is so sad. I'm always amazed that people will just flat out ask how much my dog costs, and sometimes I feel as if they are looking at Dinky as some sort of expensive purse they might grab. In those cases, I spread misinformation. I tell them most pet Yorkies are not really that expensive. I tell them that with Dinky's floppy ears and coloring that he is no show dog, and that besides no one would pay anything for one as old as he is. I tell them we got a real bargain with him because he has so much wrong with him. I really can't imagine how anyone could steal a pet for love or money. |

| Its unfortunate but its not wise to leave yorkies unattended like that when people know what they are worth and will steal them and sell them so I dont feel bad for the lady she used bad judgement and it bite her

| This is an interesting thread, since I just finished reading an article from a monthly newsletter our vet sends out. The article listed the top 10 most stolen dogs. They started with #10, which was a yellow lab, went on to the pit bull, french bull dog, Boston terrier, down the line to the #1 dog most stolen in the US....the Yorkshire terrier. Reminds us all to watch these babies. |

Your friend should contact the news station about the dog she found in the hopeful chance it could be the dog of the lady that had hers taken from her car... | |
