| important question about taking a puppy out to potty at night? hi, just asking a general question that i would like to know beforehand. no, i currently do not have a pup, but i think it is some good info to know before! (assuming that the pup is 12 weeks) the first night and all nights after, would it be a good idea to 1) let him/her hold it all night in his crate (so maybe about 10:30ish for a potty break and take out again at 7:00-7:30 am), or 2) take him/her out in the middle of the night for a potty break or 3) leave the crate door open and a potty pad outside of the crate until the pup is old enough to "hold" it?

| The pup can not hold it all night. The crate shoukd be in your bedroom where the pup can see you and the pup should cry when they need to go out. It is like have a new baby and you may not get a lot of sleep for the first few weeks. Mine would cry and I would take her potty and put her back in. If you have taken them potty and they just keep crying you have to ignore it.

At 12 weeks my pup needed to go out once in the middle of the night to pee. She was able to hold it through the night at 13 weeks old, but some take even longer. The pup will let you know if they need to go! | |

| I hate to say it most pups are different, my last two could hold it from the first night I had them which was about 14 weeks, however two others of mine on most nights could not throughout their whole life. But I will say most should be able to hold it by at least 6 months. Lola my present pup often does not look to go out before 10 in the morning because after I get up she goes right back to bed, often I make her go out long before she would ask to be let out. LOL wish I had her bladder, I go about 3 times more than her and can't hold it at night

| Jackson was a bigger boy, he was 6lbs already at 12 weeks and he couldn't hold it all night as a young pup. He would usually go around 8-9pm and then wake up around 4 to go again. Then we would go back to bed. But it didn't last too long honestly... I recall by about 5 months old him sleeping throguh the night.

| I think it depends on what your long term goal is? If you want him to only potty outside then the crate is good, they wake you and you take him out to the spot you want him to potty. (If you live in a coyote prone area put him on a leash) If you want him to use potty pads, when he wakes you put him in the expen on the potty pad. Let him do his thing, then put him back in the crate. I opted for the second. My dog (10 months) potties at night but she just gets in and out of our bed on her own and goes on her pad. I am old and lazy plus we spend time where it snows and there is NO WAY I am going outside in the middle of the night. |

| agree 12 weeks is way to young for them. with my 4 puppies 6 months old they could, at 7 months old they were 100% house broken. They were walked at 7:30AM, I came home from work at 4:30PM, another walk, then at 10 PM I just took them curb side for last pee-pee for the night. But like another member posted, each dog is diff. but 12 weeks they are way to young.

| I would say to let them tell you when they have to go potty....if you wake them to go then they get that routine. That's just my opinion though :-) Winnie has not asked to go our in the middle of the night since we brought her home. She had an accident in her kennel the first night....and that was because she went and then alerted! Since then she has gone out first thing in the morning when we wake up. She still has some accidents during the day because I don't see her tell that she has to go out....but all in all she's doing very well. She sleeps in the bed with us now. We kept her in the kennel overnight for the first almost 2 weeks....then my husband brought her to bed with him one night and that was that. |
