I think it depends on what your long term goal is? If you want him to only potty outside then the crate is good, they wake you and you take him out to the spot you want him to potty. (If you live in a coyote prone area put him on a leash) If you want him to use potty pads, when he wakes you put him in the expen on the potty pad. Let him do his thing, then put him back in the crate.

I opted for the second. My dog (10 months) potties at night but she just gets in and out of our bed on her own and goes on her pad. I am old and lazy plus we spend time where it snows and there is NO WAY I am going outside in the middle of the night.
