| Any of you have a really posessive Yorkie? The other day I was walking Charlie and my neighbor from across the street was walking her Yorkie.... I have notice her walking him before and wanted to go introduce myself and introduce Charlie to her yorkie... I always let Charlie make friends with the neighborhood dogs because he loves being social. Well as I went walking up the lady looked at me weird like " what are you doing"... I kept walking and said... "your yorkie is so cute.... can I introduce him to mine?" As I walked a little closer her little yorkie flipped out in major attack mode.. She had to pick him up and walk away from us.. Then kind of said. Sorry. I was like.. Wow. That little dog just can't be around other dogs at all.. I am assuming it was Charlie that made the dog flip the way it did and not me... But I don't think I ever seen that as intense.. This little dog had a real temper. LOL ! |

I just think it's strange she would be out walking her dog if that's how it reacts to other dogs. Does she think she will never come across other dogs while going for a walk. Forgot to add, my pup will go crazy like she's going to attack when she sees other dogs ONLY if I try to pull her away from them. She loves to say hi to everyone and play so she gets really mad when I don't let her. Still trying to work on that! Last edited by kreuer; 08-26-2014 at 10:53 AM.

| Can't say Sheldon acts that way at all yet, and I don't think he ever will. He loves everything and everyone. The only time he even barks is to be pushy to me when he thinks I'm not giving him enough attention. He doesn't bark at people, dogs, sounds, nothing like that (yet...as I vigorously knock on wood). |

| I guess it's my fault for assuming I could just walk over to them and mingle... lol But all the other dogs in the area have all been very good and friendly so far... Guess I got ahead of myeslf. IDK |

| Yikes, it sounds like she really shouldn't be walking her dog as much as trying to get him socialized and working on his aggression. How scary for him to just flip out like that! Billi isn't really possessive as she is protective. If she thinks someone's trying to hurt me then she'll react by growling or barking, but she snaps out of it quickly. I'd freak if she reacted that way to someone else's dog...

| We have had a lot of smaller dogs flip out on us too. Poor Teddy has almost been ruined by this. The other dogs either flip out or they jump on his head, paw at his face (bad manners). Max often barks when he wants to greet another dog, but he looks and sounds like a lunatic so people aren't anxious to get closer. Not many people believe me when I say, "Really, he is nice!"

| We have a few yorkies in our neighbor who are not friendly to other dogs. I really believe this is the fault of the owner. Why they would not socialize their dog when they were younger is strange to me. Gizmo just wants go up to every dog and give them kisses! |

This is the exact reason I put Lexi in puppy obedience class. I knew she would be the smallest dog there, but she needs to learn to socialize with all size dogs.

My boys love all Yorkies that they encounter, despite not being super socialized. Sometimes people do not have a chance to socialize their dogs. I do not trust 99% of the dogs or their humans in my neighborhood (or the ones in the training classes), so there was no way I was going to let my 3 pound puppy try to socialize with them. It's partially my fault, being over-protective, but I think that I have a healthy fear of what may happen.

| My Luna is a spaz like that! She gets along well with all the dogs (of all sizes) at the groomers but she hates when other dogs come near us when we're walking. Izzy, on the other hand, is friendly as can be, she always rolls over on her back. She loves ALL other dogs! They were raised in the same house and socialized the same. Some dogs just don't ever feel comfortable around strange dogs. I think Luna is just a very fearful little girl due to her size and she just reacts out of fear. Also if she's restrained by a leash or strapped into the stroller it is worse. But I'm not letting her run free at all for safety reasons. Her favorite dog is a huge yellow lab named Laci at the groomer, she runs right up to her and tries to give her kisses. She just takes a while to warm up. When we dogsat my friend's min-pin/chi mix, it took her a few days until she would be nice to her. Try not to judge someone's dog and say they shouldn't be walked because they're not friendly to other dogs. They deserve fresh air and exercise too! The owner did the right thing and removed him from the situation. I always warn other dog walkers that Luna is not dog-friendly, but allow Izzy to say hello. They're completely opposite when it comes to little kids though, Luna LOVES them and Izzy is scared to death.

| *hangs head in shame* I'm one of those bad owners. Magnus does well for the most part but it's 50/50 when it comes to big breeds. I don't really know what sets him off. Zoey's the anti social one. She won't go crazy but she will give you/dog a warning not to come closer. They both got/get same amount of socialization but it seems to be more of Zoey's personality that makes her bit more "protective/possessive" than Magnus. She absolutely hates it when another dog approaches me or if I give him/her attention so she starts to show aggression. Oh, one thing I think is funny is that the few times we've met another yorkie(s), Zoey is interested. It's like she recognizes that the other dog is also a yorkie. LOL |

I'm sorry if what I said offended you. I was not trying to judge you or anyone who's dog acts that way around other dogs. I was thinking more about safety concerns. If Lexi did that on walks I would be so scared that if we came across a large dog and she did that, the large dog may snap back. With such a little dog, it only takes one bite from a large dog.

My first Yorkie, Starr, was attacked by a neighbor's off-leash Pit, she was barking her head off, she just didn't like that particular dog and she was very protective of my daughter, who was walking her. The dog came flying at her from the garage, bit and shook her, and jumped all over my daughter and her friend. The neighbor came out and called his dog. Thankfully she didn't get hurt too badly, just a couple of punctures that were superficial. My daughter, however, was traumatized and it took her years to be able to be around bigger dogs. The neighbor was mad that I called Animal Control about the incident because he was told to obey the leash laws, and was whining about not being able to have his dog "just hang out in the garage with me" But he did keep that dog behind the fence thereafter I think that I would love to take Luna to some kind of training but just really can't afford it right now, not with a kid in college So I use extra caution in the meantime.

I know this is probably going to sound crazy, but in my 40 years before getting my Yorkies, I never saw any of the people anywhere I lived socializing their dogs. Everyone just walked their dogs down the street and that was it! Dogs passed each other on the sidewalk and didn't pay much attention to each other. I never heard of a meetup and never saw a dog park. My family had 2 dogs, not at once, and they never stopped to meet another dog on the street. Strange, isn't it?
