| How Long until it gets long?? Ricky is 2.5 years old and I've had him a year come this May. When I got him, his hair was a few inches long all around and he was in a cute little puppy cut. I haven't cut it since I got him(other than his, ears sanitary areas and his feet) and it has grown out, but I thought he'd have a full coat by now and he does not. His hair has grown really slow but it seems like it's about 1/2 way there and it has just stopped growing all together. The only thing that seems to be growing is the hair that was cut really short around his eyes(thank goodness) and it's finally starting to get long enough to put in his hair band. I've worked pretty hard trying to keep up on his coat. He gets brushed daily and bathed on a weekly basis. Do you think it's possible that this is it...and it just won't get any longer?? I know my hair won't grow more than an inch or 2 past my shoulders...maybe he's like his mamma?!? I really was hoping to grow out his coat out to the floor but if it's not going to grow, I'd like to give him a puppy cut again once it gets warm. He has the cutest little puppy face and he loathes being groomed in any way. On top of that, by day 3 after his bath, he looks like he hasn't been groomed in months anyways. I have attached a few pics of what he looked like when I got him. When I bathe him this weekend, I will add some pics of where his coat is now. Maybe I am trying to rush things, but I thought for sure it would be longer than this after a year. |

| Ricky is adorable! Is he really active? My boys' coats do not touch the floor, and I think it is because they are super active. Dragging along pavement on our walks, carpet surfing playing fetch causes a lot of wear and tear. I also think trimming the ends helps stimulate growth. That is probably why my boys' feet/legs/beards grow fastest. I try to remember to trim their saddles, but I often forget.

| What a darling face. Zoey's hair grows about 1/2" per year. - anyway, that's what it seems like.

| Our Graysee just turned 6 in December, and we stopped "cutting" her hair over 4 years ago, and it still isn't down to the ground. Of course, we keep her ends trimmed, because she's much easier to brush out without the split ends' tangles. I often think she might be happier with shorter hair, but then, she probably couldn't care less about her appearance! |

| I really think this is something that is wired genetically. I have two boys who easily grow hair. I recently cut everyone down into puppy cuts as I got really tired of keeping up with it. I hadn't cut Teddy's hair for his entire life so seeing him short is like having a little puppy again. If you want to encourage growth, I say regular trims, a solid quality diet, good products and the right brush and comb (madan brush and stainless comb). Don't brush a dirty coat.

| Here is his hair after his bath. He hates being groomed and was sick of being fussed with so I could not get him to stack well.... His hair does seem a bit longer once I wash and blow dry it. I also put Chris Christenston Hair Gel in his bum hair to give it a bit of weight because he's got curly, fuzzy butt hair. After a few days it gets kinky and looks shorter though. I also trimmed the ends a bit tonight in an attempt to help it grow. Ricky was starving and was severely underweight when he was rescued a year ago. His coat was also in bad shape as well because he'd been running around outdoors in the wild for at least a month in November. I don't think his former owners groomed him much either as he flipped out when he had baths, he's scared of scissors and clippers and he hates being fussed with...especially his feet. He is getting better with his baths, but he's been getting them on a weekly basis since I got him. I was hoping his hair would be longer by now. As you can see from his first picture, his hair wasn't super short(like shaved down) when I got him. It has grown some but its been a slooowwww process and it seems like most of his hair has stopped growing BTW...he is very active. He loves to play fetch and he's like a little gazelle with his long legs. I've always said he'd make a great agility dog because he is a little speed demon and he can jump amazingly high. He gets running so fast that he will often come to a sliding stop on the carpeting to get his toys. He also loves to rub all over the carpeting and the couch, which I am sure doesn't help his hair much either. |

| First of all Ricky is adorable. From what you said about him being mal-nourished when you rescued him a year ago speaks volumes about his coat crisis. It takes the body a looonnnggg time to recover from lack of proper diet. My best advice is to be patient and perhaps to add a coat enhancing supplement to his diet. I use a product called Synergy which is basically a concentrated "super-food". I started using it when I was struggling with Lollie's show coat. I won't go into details, 'cause I don't want to hyjack your thread, but I will say that Lollie is a "real dog" who lives on a horse farm and loves to escape to the barn to play. I don't keep her in wraps, she plays crazy wild, sleeps under the covers and is treated like the precious pet that she is, even during the time that she was growing her show coat, being shown championed and now is retired from the show ring and a mommy. I firmly believe that the ability to grow coat is largely genetic, but in orderto maximize the coat growth in any dog, you need to be sure that the dog is getting all the nutrients a healthy coat requires. You grow a coat from the inside out. Keeping the hair clean also helps encourage coat growth, so a weekly bath with gentle products (I like Minksheen and Crown Royale) is necessary. And of course don't forget to condition! You might try a very light coat oil to help protect the coat. Also, be sure to use good brushes sprayed with a light coat conditioner. Good luck with Ricky's coat, he is absolutely adorable and it looks like his coat is growing out well. |

| I think your little guy is so cute! I don't know why we are suddenly seeing so many Yorkies that have shorter coats. It must be some genetic thing. It is possible that some good all natural supplements for skin and coat may help him grow some more length. Omege 3 supplements are really good for skin and coat and dogs usually like them. Trying to use a natural shampoo that does not have sulfate or other chemicals will also help the skin and hair to get stronger especially with bathing weekly. Sulfates can dry out the skin way too much if used on a weekly basis. Some people just keep their little ones coat's short. I have always loved long haired pets so I love grooming their hair and keeping them looking nice. I hope with good nutrition and some healthy grooming practices he gets some more length for you. My girl's hair grows fast and I have to cut it to keep it from dragging the floor but genes vary. |

| Ive been wondering this as well... Mickey is almost 8months and his coat is about 75% there. It sems the past few weeks its been at a plateau. It may or may not help that I take him to be trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks. I cant decide.

| Not all yorkies can grow the full coat. It depends on genetics, just like us. For example I have very thin and limp hair. I have tried every product available in the western hemisphere to make my hair thicker, but it just doesn't work. I don't have it in my genes. Same with my Uni. She has very fine thin hair and breaks easily. I have only cut her hair once when she was a puppy to get rid of the black. Not once since and she is 7. Her hair is not even close to touching the ground. Her face gets long but still not enough to get it in a topknot and even if I did, it would be a pathetic little sprout. Toto on the other hand. His hair is so thick and pin straight. Grows like a weed. I don't give him regular trims or any supplements for hair. It's just how it grows out.
