| Is Karo syrup necessary? Hello, everyone! I have just recently got a little baby yorkie, she is 9 weeks and this is my first time having a little puppy. I was told to give her Karo syrup AND ener-cal to keep her sugar up and prevent hypoglycemia. However, the vet told me that Karo syrup isn't really necessary as long as I give her ener-cal. What confuses me is that on the label of ener-cal says it's a nutrition supplement? So I just want to know from fellow yorkie owners, is ener-cal sufficient enough to prevent hypoglycemia or do you mix Karo/honey sometimes in your puppies food as well? I have been giving her little amounts of banana and apple as well to give her a little sugar along with ener-cal between meals. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | First of all has your pup ever had an episode of low sugar? Are they eating properly and often threw out the day? I have never heard of them being use to prevent a Hypoglycemia episode from happening nor have I ever had to use it in all my years of owning or breeding Yorkie pups. Any toy breed can be susceptible to a Hypoglycemia (low sugar). The key to preventing it is to make sure that they are getting their scheduled meals (3-4 per day) and plenty of rest in between meals. It only take one missed meal for these tiny pups to have a low sugar episode. Plus its very importantly not to put them in a stressful situations (such as large crowd during the holidays) The stress from leaving its mother and liter mates is stressful enough. The Karo/Nutri cal are supplemental products that are used if and when a pup has an episode from not eating a proper diet or who is being a finicky eater. Lots of water intake is also very important for these little ones. Im sure there are some who will disagree with the use of Kayro/Nutri cal but I have never had a pup that was in need of. It is certainly a good thing to have just in case.

| Thank you for the reply Dawn! I think I'm going to stop the karo syrup because she just gets a little too hyper on it lol. She is 1.5lbs though so I will probably still use the ener-cal to make sure she gets all the nutrients she needs for the day. She eats her food though, she seems to love Merrick food a lot lol. |

| And she hasn't had an episode of low sugar but since it's my first puppy I just wanted to follow what the instructions said. I think she's ok though without the karo. |

| It's kinda confusing when reading threads on YT about getting new puppies. I understand keeping Karo, nutrical, etc on hand IN CASE of a hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episode. As far as giving it as part of a daily routine, can't that cause hyperglycemia? (High blood sugar) Anyway, welcome to YT. I think this is an excellent question.

| Nothing can 100% can keep hypoglycemia from happening. The best thing to do is make sure your puppy is eating often. Giving nutrical or Karo syrup just because can actually make there sugar go up really high and then suddenly drop. Only give them the stuff for hypoglycemia if they are having a hypoglycemic episode.

| I have to agree with the others, if your pup is eating frequent small meals...just have the Nutrical/Enercal on hand, in case it's needed. No need to supplement with it daily, only as needed. Please allow her to rest frequently throughout the day as well...this helps preserves her energy...try not to let her get too excited for extended lengths of time. Short spurts of play time, after being well fed, is best. Welcome to YorkieTalk...what's your babies name by the way?

| I used it the first week I had Gizmo along with nutrical , BUT he was in a hypoglycemic coma when I rescued him, at around the same size as your baby. Once his blood sugar was stabilized through a good diet, I've not given it to him since. I would just make sure he's eating well, and check his gums often to make sure they are nice and pink. My Gizmo unfortunately was rescued by me from some back yard breeder who was starving him to stunt his growth, to try to make more money off him by selling him as a micro (which does not exist but created by unscrupulous breeders), and he had gone into a coma from low blood sugar, and his gums were pure white. I would read up on here about the best diets and all of that stuff :-) this place is amazing, the people are so helpful, they really helped me get Gizmo through his ordeal and he's very healthy now, with a few left over medical issues due to being starved. It sounds like your on the right track, asking the right questions and your pup is lucky to have you :-) |

| Thank you everyone! I haven't been giving Chloe the Karo at all and the ener-cal I'm just giving it once in a while, but I've pretty much taken her off of that too unless I see she looks too tired. I give her banana and apple instead for that little bit of sugar and she loves it lol. |

| Glad to hear that she is doing so well... just keep a close eye on her since she is really very young.... most breeders wait until at least 10 weeks before they let puppies go from their mother. If there are any signs of sluggishness I wouldn't hesitate to give the nutri-cal.
