| First Post! Getting a Yorkie for my birthday... but which one do I pick? Hi YorkieTalk! For my birthday, my parents took me to look at a litter of seven week old Yorkies. The Yorkies come from the same breeder who bred our amazing Cocker Spaniel, Boomer, so I have no doubts that the puppies are happy and healthy. The litter has only three puppies, so I was able to see all three when she drove them out to us. I truly cannot decide on which puppy I should pick! I was not allowed to touch the pups because they are so young, so I only have visuals to base my choice off of. All three of the pups are so adorable and seem to already have pretty distinct personalities. Here's a picture of the three The zebra towel was covering a warm water bottle (it was really cold outside!) http://i.imgur.com/1aKCXtL.jpg The puppy on the left is the smallest male. During the visit, he was the most rambunctious and curious of the group despite the fact that this was an entirely new environment for them. He liked to chew the paper and the towel. He even tried to escape the crate a couple of times! I thought his little attitude was adorable! The breeder says he will probably be 3-4 pounds as an adult. The one in the middle is the bigger male. He seemed very timid. He hung in the back corner of the crate during most of the visit but eventually became curious and more active. By the end of the visit, he had come to the front of the crate and was even barking a little. I don't really know if he was timid or just cold but his ears never went back when I moved my hand into the crate and I don't think his pupils were dilated. The breeder says he will likely grow to be 5 pounds. The puppy at the far right is the female. She seemed very calm and content the whole visit and was the most curious to my presence of the three. When I put my hand in the kennel, she was the first to acknowledge me and try to sniff my hand. I got the "sweet little angel" vibe from her, definitely! Like the small male, the breeder says that she will likely be 3-4 pounds. I am planning to feed the pup I pick a raw diet once they are old enough and I am even thinking about taking the pup to therapy dog training if it's calm enough. I took some video of the three during our visit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwmfiM8eoAM The beginning of the video was taken during the beginning of the visit, right after the crate was opened. After the fade and perspective change (I forgot to put my phone in landscape mode) the film skips to the end of the visit after the puppies had become much more active. Personally, I thought the female had the most mellow personality of the three which would probably make her the best choice.... But I am a girl myself and I know from experience that female dogs are more likely to bond with men in the house. Since this puppy is my responsibility, I would much rather have it bond with me than with my dad or boyfriend.... Then come the two males. The littlest one is such a charmer and I loved his little firecracker personality. However, the fact he was so bold and rambunctious in such a new environment makes me wonder if he will be difficult to train and control. The bigger male is the most curious one. While at first glance I thought he was terrified of everything going on, now I think he may have just been cold. When the breeder began petting the other pups, he came right up to her and began acting much more active. I also don't think he was acting frightened when I put my hand in the crate (he may have growled once or twice). Perhaps it just takes him a while to warm up to someone? I'm not sure. Is a timid Yorkie really a bad thing? I know timid dogs can be trained to be more social, so perhaps I can correct the timid behavior. Or maybe I'm just seeing things wrong? What do you all think? Do the puppies look good according to breed standards? Do you see anything in the video that I don't? I really think I need some feedback before just making a decision. Before I end this off, here are two more picture that I thought were pretty cute. Please tell me what you think! |

YT 1000 Club Member | They are all very cute I can see why it's hard for you to decide!!!! I would probably be torn between the female and smallest male(I have the smallest male from my breeders litter). What is your personality like? Are you more outgoing and rambunctious yourself or a bit more mellow? You want a pup that fits with your personality. When do you have to make your choice? Some puppies seem mellow when you first visit but over time can be hellraisers lol. Sometimes males bond with the males in the home more....my Rasta happens to like my husband almost as much as me lol. It all depends on the individual pup Btw WELCOME TO YT!!!!! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome! They are all adorable. Personally I like the look of the small male. I usually go for the calmer one as I am a more laid back person. But maybe when you can interact more with them you will get a better feel for the best fit for you. They are all cute. Good luck in your decision.

| Thanks for the replies! As of now I am also leaning towards the small male but that could change in the coming hours. Personally, I am a bit lazy, irresponsible, and antisocial which is why I am getting the pup. I have always handled life better when my schedule is full of things to do- and I know that having a puppy will be a great way to get more responsible, fill up my day, and get out and be a bit more social through training classes and walks. I am currently in college but am living with my parents. My parents said that they will make sure the puppy is taken care of when I am in class but every other moment the puppy is my responsibility. We also live with a nine year old male Cocker Spaniel named Boomer. I have heard that I should get a female since Boomer is male, but our last female dog ignored everyone but my dad which is why I am so nervous about picking the female in the litter. I know every puppy is different, but I won't be able to see the litter again before making my final choice so I have to consider everything. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I would have the breeder send you weekly updates and video(if possible) until you have to make your final decision. This may help with your decision. They're 7 weeks old now and so much can change. I picked a girl puppy when I visited my breeder at 8 weeks then a week before I was set to pick her up I fell for my little guy :-). I had a year old female English bulldog before I got Rasta so I can't say anything about same sex territorial issues but there will be an adjustment period whether you get a male or female puppy. That's great your parents are willing to help! Last edited by ColesMommy01; 12-08-2013 at 08:19 PM. |

| Yeah, my parents are pretty darn awesome! ^.^ They told me I should choose which puppy I want within the week so there's no chance of losing it to another breeder. I agree with them, but I'm so terrible at making decisions that I just had to get some more opinions before I made my final choice, lol. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I'd go with the larger Male... One may appreciate the security issues that Males provide as they grow and acclimate to you and your residence. When provided with stairs/ramps to observation points, will observe and alarm when there is any intrusion. They're very alert and I certainly feel a lot safer with my Males watching out for me. (I have two)

| I took the smallest boy of a litter of two. I wanted a girl, but the litter was two boys, so that eliminated the gender choice. Copper will be four soon. He is very attached to me and I have never regretted getting him instead of a female. I vote for the small male! Good luck with your choice!!

| I'd take the girl. But they are all so cute. It would be a hard decision. I have two girls and have enjoyed them. They were easy to potty train. Good luck to you. |
