| Humane Society~A high kill shelter?!? Are all humane societies considered high kill shelters?? Or does it depend on which one it is?? Do they all have the same policies for the length of time they keep a dog?? I've heard they have a month at the one in Detroit. The reason I am asking is because I found a yorkie today in a humane society about an hour away...4 years old...very cute!! They are asking for $125 for him OR you can give them a large bag of purina cat or kitten chow or a box of cat litter. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/27911109/ I can't be his furever home, but I am willing to foster him until he does find his furever home...and at that price, I am willing to go pull him out of there if he is at risk of being put down. If I got him out of there, what do you think the chances are of a rescue working with me to place the little guy. I can foster him. I just can't keep him forever. OR...do you think it's better I leave him in there so he can find his furever home?!? There are SOOOO MANY Yorkies here in Michigan. I wish we could ship them to other areas where there's hardly any available on petfinder!! |

| What a shame! I thought some of the places around here were bad! They don't let dogs go for $125 or a bag of food though! The shelters around here that are affilliated with the Humane Society are high kill shelters. They will only keep animals for 7 days at the most when they are at capacity. Several people who helped run one of the humane society shelters near here broke off from that one several years ago and started a no kill shelter. It's much nicer and they do their very best to find homes for the animals but they do reach capacity and have to turn animals away when they run out of room. It such a sad business. I would adopt that guy out of there. It does not sound like they are very particular about who they let have their animals. If you could get him out of their hands then you probably could work with a Yorkie or small dog rescue in finding a really good home for him. At the very least you could make sure he is neutered and healthy and them find a really good home for him yourself. |

| I am super worried that someone is going to go buy a $20 bag of cat food and pick this little guy up and then I'll see him for sale later on Craigslist for $300. I'd like to think they screen more than that, but I know the one we were at did not. My friend had to provide a place of residency and that was really about it. They didn't do a homecheck...they didn't verify place of employment...nothing. |

| The HS I got Peek and Tink from is a kill shelter. Tink was high on the kill list as they thought she had anal gland problems (they didn't know about the liver issues at that time). The norm is 30 days, but I have seen them keep a Pitty for over a year. It all depends on the dog, their age and personality, are they highly adoptable or not... very sad. Check with the shelter, they may allow you to foster for them. The one HS here does that too.

| It just seems inhumane to give a dog away for a large bag of pet food! Especially a dog as special as a Yorkie. It's not like they are just like any dog! Even if you can't keep him you could find him a good home. Yorkies are very popular. The problem is that there are always people looking for a cheap Yorkie. People who have no idea the kind of issues a Yorkie may have. |

| I wish I had seen this earlier, I would have picked him up while I was in PH today! I can pick him up on Monday if he is still there if you are willing to foster him. I can pick up a huge bag of dog food at TSC on my way there for his adoption and give them the fee. Let me know if you want me to go get him. As long as he is nice to Gunner he can stay here for a few days.

| Oh, the shelter is a high kill rate, but it seems like they know this guy will be easily adopted since they altered him. I wouldn't be surprised if he is gone by monday.

My girlfriend seems to think that he's going to be nabbed quick because a small purebred dog at a shelter. I had seen another adorable little guy around his age on Petfinder that was at a home based rescue close to me and he was gone within 2 days. I am going to call them on Monday to see what they say!!He just got neutered on Thursday so I am thinking he just got in there. I'd have to wait until after Thanksgiving to adopt him as I am going to be heading home this week. Depending on what they say, I am going to call a couple of the rescues around me to see if they'd be willing to work with me on getting him a new family. | |

| He will go fast. I pray it is to someone who understands that little dogs can sometimes take work to potty train. I have seen people adopt small dogs at my HS and return them the same day because they peed in the house. Lord knows how long these pups are in the system...passed from shelter to shelter to craigslist ad to petfinder to homeless. I think being purebred at least gives him a better chance of not being euthanised...if he's healthy. They may have a wait list for people who requested to be contacted if a yorkie comes in. That would probably be a better scenario than if any random person who sees a cute tiny dog and wants it for Christmas as an impulse buy. :/

| What a cutie. I am sure he will be adopted quickly, you just have to hope that it's to a good home. My mom's yorkie was from a shelter and so many people were interested in her, they said they were going to have a raffle...

| I called right at 9:30 and was told the same thing. He was still there, so the person did not pick him up yet.
