| ![]() Hawks are bold and they take dogs all the time. When you see "dog missing" posters up at certain times of the year the vets will tell you it's hawk season and the hawks got them. I NEVER let mine out in the yard unless they are on a leash and I am constantly watching the sky. We don't have many around but I have seen them and I have read so many stories that I am paranoid!!!! People don't expect a hawk to be able to carry off a dog, but they do and even when they miss and you get the dog back it usually has a broken back due to the strength of their talons. They are powerful animals and definitely predators of our little dogs. I am glad this story has a happy ending...I always cringe when I hear people say that they let their dogs out in their yards or have doggie doors that lead to uncovered areas outside. I always assume that they live in areas not populated by birds of prey. Owls are another bird that preys on small dogs. ![]() |

| ![]() So glad to hear your babies are ok. BEWARE, don't leave those little babies outside alone and always watch the skies ! I've read in Maine a hawk carried away a 15 lb dog, finally dropped it from about 350 feet up in the sky. Maybe it was getting to heavy to carry but we'd never let our little ones outside alone with or without a leash, its just asking for trouble. Always have to watch the skies where ever you live, they can come down by surprise. Be careful in those open park areas also. I remember reading a thread not too long ago where a coyote came along and grabbed a yorkie that was walking on a leash and took it away in front of the owner. You have to have eyes on all sides of you and even to the skies ! Last edited by Yorkie24U; 01-01-2006 at 10:17 PM. |

| ![]() I am very worried about hawks in my area. A hawk almost knocked me over (its wing went through my hair) trying to get a baby quail only a foot or two in front of me. Definitely - Do whatever you need to do to keep your little dogs away from hawks. Carol Jean |

| ![]() What a scary story! I'm so glad your dad was able to save the yorkies! I don't think there's hawks around here in the winter, but I have seen them in the summer. Someone said something about owls...do owls ever attack dogs at night? I ask because one night I heard and owl in our evergreen tree. I am always listening for animal sounds when I take Maddie out...I've heard some strange sounds that I have no idea what type animal is making them...I just hurry her back inside the house!

| ![]() I'm glad they are okay. We have a hawk that has sized Gus up a time or two. I was very lucky, I got warnings before anything terrible happened. First time it landed in a tree about twenty five feet up - all eyes on Gus. I was very fortunate that time, I was close and Gus came to me immediately when I called. I don't like to think what could have happened. Even after that I thought if he was always on a leash and only a few feet away he would be safe. That was until the day my niece was outside and the hawk landed on the ground very close to her. I have no idea why, Gus wasn't even outside, but it did. Now I practically stand over him when we go out. Everyone with birds of prey around be very, very careful. You probably won't see it coming and I know you won't hear it - it's truly amazing how silent they are.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | ![]() OMG that's so scary !! Hawks WILL snatch up a yorkie if they can and even if they don't fly off with them - the talons could seriously hurt or kill any small animal - I'm sooooo glad yours were ok and your dad was right there - a good friend of mine had her little yorkie carried off and she was standing right outside with her baby - I know to this day she's still devestated..... ![]() THAT hawk had some really BIG ones to come into your porch like that ~! |

| ![]() Wow...that is scary....I hope this does not offend anyone...but here goes- When my son was 2 or 3 he would play in our fenced in back yard...well a big blackbird kept chasing him...it was bad...our Dalmation Maggie saved my son from beiing attacked by the bird...but she took a beatin form the bird in the process- well I am not a violent person...but , years before I used to date a officer candidate and for fun we would go to the shooting range....so I borrowed a freinds gun...and the next day when that sucker came back to wreak havoc he was mine....

| ![]() This is a great warning and you don't have to live in Arizona for the hawks or the coyotes to kill. I think we are just more aware of these dangers along with some more you guys don't have because they are all over the place. BUT Do Not Think your larger dogs (10-15#'s)are any more safe because a hawk can kill by their talons. Think about a size of a large wild rabbitt which is larger than alot of our Yorkies and a hawk will kill many of them by this method and eat off of them on the ground. Scary ![]()

| ![]() That is crazy. I have heard of that, but never a real story of it happening. Just yesterday, my husband was saying that when we get chewie, never to leave him alone outside.
