| Should I potty-train my 1yr old whose not fully vaccinated to go outside My 1yr old named Aubie was fully trained to go on puppy pads until he started hiking his leg & I went out of town for surgery. I tried getting a small flower pot turned upside down for him to hike his leg on but he won't use it. I haven't wanted to train him to go outside because he almost died after getting his 1st round of vaccinations when he was 6mos old. I refuse to take any chances to give him any more since I don't know which one hurt him. I'm also many days bed ridden but I can work something out for someone to take him out if it's safe. I just can't handle my house smelling like dog pee & poop anymore. He stays by my side all day & night & gets up very little. Any suggestions?? Thanks for any help anyone can give. This is my 1st & last dog to train. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Why did Aubie have his first vaccinations at 6 months old? Vaccinations should start before 12 weeks of age. I'm not sure exactly which week. If he has not had one-year boosters of the essential vaccinations, I would be nervous. This would be a topic to discuss with your vet. Is he marking generally around the house, or just hiking his leg while on the pad? Was he neutered? If he is just hiking while on the pad, move the pad several inches away from any vertical surfaces like a wall. Another idea is to wrap another piddle pad around the pot or other tall object on the pad that is on the floor. I'm sorry to hear you are often confined to bed. Aubie obviously wants to stay at your side, but he needs some exercise. If you could have someone help you to give Aubie some exercise, even playing indoors, that would be best for his health. Definitely check in with your vet concerning vaccinations and going outdoors.

| I would let him go outside in his own yard to potty and play. You probably don't have a whole lot of diseased critters loitering about your own fenced back yard and dogs have got to relieve themselves and exercise. Keep him from puddles and sniffing the fence or puddle you saw another dog leave through the Cox fence and things like that, obviously, but he's got be able to get about in nature in your yard just a bit.

| Thank u both for responding! Maximo: I had read a lot online about vaccinations & was very concerned since he only weighs almost 4lbs. The only vet we have is known for giving the as many combo shots as possible & the same for all dogs. He's had several small Yorkies die after vaccinations. As crazy as it sounds, I just had a bad feeling about them. He got his 1st set & had an allergic reaction to 1 of them, ran a high temp & severe vomiting for 5 days.He couldn't even stand up. He does get a lot of exercising. My boys & husband come home everyday & play chase & other games with him. So I don't have to worry about that. I've never let him walk out in my yard b/c there are my neighbor's dogs around. He hasn't been neutered yet. I think it's a combination of marking his territory, being spoiled, & going fm squating to hiking his leg. He was completely trained then I was gone for 3wks for surgery. I had family stay at my home & they painted & redid the living rm so his pad was moved n there but no where else n the house. He was mad when I got home & would pee & poop everywhere but on the pads. He'll go on the pad a little now & I give him a treat & make a big deal over it. But if I do go out he apparently blames it on my husband & pees on his side of the bed while we are gone! I've thought about buying a "Puppy Apartment" which has mixed reviews. I just know that my house smells like pee & poop. He's ruined our carpet so I've got to do something soon! |

| I would insist on premedicating with Benadryl prior to any vaccination. I would find another vet even if it means a road trip. You have a vet that you say is known to kill dogs with vaccines,so it is imperative you find a vet SOME PLACE, that you can trust your pups medical care with. Lepto vaccine has a high incidence of intolerance....unless you live in an area with high infection rates of Lepto, I would not give that vaccine. |

| Thank u all for the help! I am new at this! I've always been a cat person & never had any problems with them being sick, training, or vaccinations. My Yorkie was a gift that I will forever be grateful for even if I don't get him completely potty trained! I love the woman who bread (is that the correct term) but she didn't get into it to make a bunch of money. She only had 2 certified litters. Although she loves her dogs a lot she doesn't know as much about them as most breeders. She kept the mom & dad & a puppy from each litter. They live out in the woods where no other dogs r around & only the parents are vaccinated. I'm going to talk to the vet here & see if he'll take me seriously & if he won't then do I look in the yellow pages for an interalist vet or how do I find one? Nashville is 1 1/2 hrs away fm me but Florence, Alabama is only 40mins away. I'd think surely I can find one in either direction...I hope! 😊 |
