I like them, too, but aside from the pre-existing conditions issue there's also a waiting period. I think it's 30 days. Of course, one of ours ended up with an eye issue during the waiting period and they wouldn't cover it or any visits related to it after the waiting period. Just something to keep in mind. They've been fantastic about everything else, though and I was aware of the waiting period.

Good luck with your little one!

No there are appleheads, which have that adorable little round head, short legs, stocky body.....and then there are deer chihuahuas, that are lean, longer, tall with long legs, and a more streamline head, longer muzzle.....

So there are separate classifications according to AKC? bc I"m having trouble finding that. I've read on here numerous times that "applehead" was akin to "teacup" and in fact "teacup" for a chi as well.

There are a lot of "buzz" words thrown around all the time by breeders. Teacup we know is one for sure, but I am not at all educated with chis, so I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

'Apple Head', I thought it was a word that breeders made up to describe their head shape. Obviously, if you breed for that 'look', you're over looking the fact that they have open fontenelles...which I always thought were not supposed to be bred. So I read a little online & it's a controversial subject. Some argue that if they 'culled' (yes, they used that word!) all the carriers of that gene, Chi's would not be in existence.

The term applehead or deer chihuahua, is not a breed subset that you register separately, under Chihuahua, with AKC. They are absolutely two different body styles and are not considered with the same hatred as the phrase teacup.....(and yes teacup is widely used in the Chihuahua world, and it is not looked upon with such disdain in those circles, unless things have changed since 1973, as it is mearly considered a term used by the general public, as they try to find the tiny little "pocket pups".) Chis would not be in existance if they culled out the open font gene, because it is so common and accepted in that breed, unlike Yorkies.

@amyazer- I went through the same situation with my Chibi. He was diagnosed w/ grade 2 patella's at about 6 months old. Since I had him for so long before he got diagnosed even though the breeders contract said only refunds if I returned him we were able to talk it out and she ended up giving me 1/2 my money back once I sent her proof of his diagnosis and she claimed she had his mother spayed.
I do want to warn you though where there is one problem their are probably more. I love my dog more than anything in the world but at the time I had him I worked at a vet's office and got things at cost and still paid probably well over $5,000 in medical bills for him in the short 6 years I've had him. He has been so sick a lot of his little life and it is heartbreaking to go through, there were nights where I just held him and cried and worried if I would have to make the choice to euthanize rather than let him suffer. Luckily he has been in good health lately but it has not been easy to get here.
I know you probably are in love with this puppy but please think long and hard about the long term problems this little one might have. If you are up for it financially and emotionally go for it but be prepared- it is a long hard road...... from some one who's been there

I agree logically with you here, and knowing the pain and the heartache and wondering always, is she suffering? Am I doing the wrong thing keeping her here...but then she lets me know and we go on...today alone was 300 for me with Mini...I've spent a fortune on her, I've gone without for sure, but at the end of the day I can't imagine not having her in my arms...I love this girl more and more everyday...I would do anything for Mini, for any of my pups...

I had gotten a puppy from a breeder in January. (This was prior to the puppy I currently have.) His name was Rafiki. I had him for 2 days and he started having horrible seizures. My boyfriend and I rushed him to the vet and $1400 in vet bills later we had to put him down because he had Hydroencefulus and was not going to survive through the night. I was heartbroken. The breeder gave me a refund for the money I payed for Rafiki but would not help with the vet bills. I was so devastated that I had just lost my little baby. Take my advice.. Hydroencefelus is a fatal birth defect. I know you don't want to give her back but believe me you don't want to watch the poor thing suffer and you should not be the one to have to make that kind of decision. Let the breeder take care of it.

How can some of yall say just give the puppy back to the greeder? Seriously the pup would be better off put to sleep then given back to this terrible breeder who would either pass her off to someone else for lots of money or even keep her and breed her! Sometimes it needs to not be about money but about this poor pup she should absolutely not be given back to the greeder unless money is the ONLY concern here. This is a living breathing being that feels things, she didn't ask to be born with problems so she shouldn't have to suffer and be given back to a terrible person who will do God knows what with her.

When I bought my dachshund about 13 years ago he had a testicle hernia. Being so tiny at 6 weeks old, they could not do surgery yet. When I got home from the vet I called the woman I bought him from. She offered to refund my money for the pup...but if I kept him no money on vet bills or refund. I hung up on her. How dare she? So what if I only had him for a few days. He had a name and it was Odie. When I left her house with him, he was my child. He eventually had surgery at 8 weeks. He died of heart disease at 10 years old. I still have days where I cry because I miss him so much. I'm tearing up now thinking of all of the wonderful years I had with him...the love we gave each other. If I had to make the same decision again, I would. Please think hard before giving your baby back. You have an opportunity to give her a wonderful life full of love that she may not otherwise have. I'm sorry this post is so long. But, it is important to me to share it.
