| Spay Over Night Stay? Just made Lacey's Spay appointment for July 5. I was informed that she would have to stay overnight. Seems like reading here, most pups go home same day. She will be all alone that night. No one stays at the Vet. I get upset every time I think of it. I've been going to this Vet for 25 years, but this is the first spay. My nueters always went home same day. She won't eat their food. I just know she won't. She eats RAW. Won't touch kibble. Has anyone else had to leave their baby overnight with no one on site?

| I dont do that.....especially with no one there...if they want to see her again first thng early am next day, I will bring her back in....I would ask they have an IV infusing the entire procedure, and post op too, up until the time I pick her up...she will be well hydrated for the night then. I like mine to have pain medicine when they come home, specifically Torbutrol in Vitamino....easy to give this liquid, it works great..... |

| Yeah. I know some keep them overnight, but to be observed. If nobody is there to observe, I would demand my baby come home with ME so *I* can observe. Just sayin...

| I don't understand why she'd be kept overnight. Someone has to monitor her. Is she particularly small? The vet can't leave her unattended. Maybe there's someone there overnight. My vet did the procedure early in the morning and I picked Lucy up at about 6 pm. Personally, I wouldn't do that unless it was an absolute necessity (having to do with the procedure itself) AND staff remained overnight to monitor her. When I took Lucy home, she even pee'd outside later that evening. She needed help and I carried her to her spot, then picked her up and carried her back inside. Who will do that for your baby? I might consider another vet. Good luck in your decision. Tracey |

| She is 5 pounds at seven months, so not really small. I talked to the Vet just now. She told me they will give her something for pain right before they close that will pretty much have her sleeping through the entire night. She said if I insisted I could take her home and bring her back first thing in the morning, but that the ride home right after surgery was not advisable. They operate at 8:00 a.m., so it seems to me that picking her up at 6:00 p.m. would be sufficient time since surgery. She said it was best to not move her until after she was checked out the next morning. I did ask about the IV fluids and she said they would not have her on IV fluids during the night. She said she would have water. I said but what if she doesn't drink. She said she would be fine for that period even if she didn't. I just want my baby home with me and not in some cold, dark place being scared and alone.

| Many many many yorkies have been spayed and neutered. Unless there is some foreseen health issue, there is absolutely NO problem with "the car ride home" after surgery. That's silly. Your vet seems a little contradictory...worried, but not enough to have someone stay with her. I'd take her home.

| I have never had a problem with the car ride home on any of mine that have been spayed. I have always insisted they come home with me that same evening. I can watch them and if need be I can go to the ER. I would insist she come home with you where you can monitor her and then take back the next morning for a check up.

| Yeah...I've never heard that about riding in the car. All of our dogs have slept the entire ride home following procedures and had no issues. And I'm not sure why they'd want to see your pup the following morning...I've always been told just to bring them back in if something funky was going on and then maybe a couple weeks later to get sutures removed (if they even use the removable ones). I guess different vets do things differently though. But yes, definitely bring your baby home since your vet has put that option on the table . |

| One thing else. Little Lacey does get car sick every time she rides in a car. That's one thing I didn't think of until now.

| Buttons might get car sick normally, but she will still be pretty out of it from pain meds and coming off anesthesia. She won't even know shes in the car - unless you live like 8 hours away or something. Do what you feel you should do, but I think almost all the advice you are going to get here is to take her home where you can watch her and care for her. If someone was going to stay at the vet office with her, that would be different.

Totally agree!!!!!!! Bah, alone at the vet's office.... and give her pain meds before they leave for the night... after having been under! Are they nuts??? Anything can go wrong, god forbid If she gets car sick, perhaps have someone drive and you sit with her, have them give her the pain meds right before you pick her up so she is drowsy for the ride... She is safer at home, under your care and at least being observed by you!! ugh, this just makes me so mad.
