| a mouse in the house... Im tired! This morning about 1am dbf's snoring got to me so I moved upstairs to the couch. I was all cuddled in with the sweetest little snorers two next to me and one on the floor. Just falling asleep around 230 when I heard this scurrying chomp chomp chomp at the dog food dish. Im tired don't think much of it other than Ruby sure is picking out here favorite pieces of food the way she is moving the pieces around in the bowl and then it dawns on me...ruby n Rosie the only 2 things small enough in the house to make that noise are cuddled up next to me.....ugh...its a mouse. Normally...in a cage or outside or in a pet store mice do not scare me. As a little girl I had been known to put babies found out in the barn in my pocket to bring them inside the house as pets..until my mom would find them. However IN THE HOUSE I DETEST THE DIRTY LITTLE B#$3RDS!!!! I had gotten my significant other two kittens this fall to take care of any mouse that was daring enough to venture in to the house but that was a bust...those two kittens now reside at my house because they have not one hunting bone in their body unless it is to attack human feet. Sorry...back to the story...as im sitting on the couch actually standing to get a better view...Its dark out and my glasses are on an end table which would mean putting my feet on the floor where the mouse could have the chance to run up my leg...not gonna happen...im squinting and all of a sudden...my fearless 3.5/4 lb Ruby 's terrier instinct kicks in and she is running for the darn mouse in the bowl. Ugh..in that split second..all I could think of was the mouse was gonna be bigger then her, its gonna bite her, she is going to get all these diseases from it and I was to chicken to get off the couch.....aaaargh....terriers are stubborn when they are in the zone. I tried to yell in a whisper every name I have called Ruby-Sioux trying to get her attention with out waking the bf. It was not working...I could hear this squeak aqueduct and chatter of the monster telling Ruby off and Ruby telling it off...well the story is anti climatic...I threw a pillow at them...Ruby was shaken out of her trance enough she came rto me and the mouse hid under the pillow til I could scoop up the girls and run down stairs to safety. I wonder what diseases mice could give to dogs with a bite? Does any one have any natural mouse repellent ideas? As much as I hate them I also hate the thought of them getting killed. This one must have made friends w the cat and the love traps we have set out he is too smart for!!

| Haha! I love your story! Sorry, I don't know about the diseases. She's probably fine, though. Cats kill mice and eat them all the time and are fine, so the short-lived altercation between Ruby and mouse probably did no harm. Set out a couple live traps on the kitchen counter and check them several times a day. The live traps have the mouse inside so the cats can't play with it's dead body in the trap before you find it. Then you can just let it go outside. Last edited by bobohyde; 02-01-2013 at 07:04 AM. |

| Mice carry Leptospirosis. Dryer softener sheets will repel mice. If you can find where they are getting in, pack the hole with dryer sheets.

| We used to buy these ultrasonic repellers to keep in the camper when we were not using it. It emits some sort of noise that keeps the mice out. It worked. Good Luck...Amazon.com: ET Pest Control (Mice Targeting...

| Too funny! House mice can carry salmonella, and the droppings of deer mice (which look just like house or field mice) carry deadly hantavirus. You really shouldn't leave their dog food out at night, or any kind of food, for that matter. Sorry your kitties are useless

| Loved your darling story ! In most cases mice are just annoying. But, mice, rats, bats, squirrels and other rodents can carry and spread diseases. I doubt a mouse would have rabies. If your dog was bitten, I think the Vet would treat it like any other fight inflicted bite. Rodent droppings can be dangerous for not only pets but, people. Not too long ago on a Native American reservation doctors were baffled by a new peumonia that filled the lungs with pus, blood and fluid. And antibiotics has little affect. People died and quickly too. Finally they discovered it was from rodent droppings. The urine from rats can contaminate stored grains and cause mold, sickness and disease. Most of us know the fleas on rats caused millions to die from the Black death, plague. Sadly even the cute little Prairie Dogs and Meerkats can carry deadly diseases. So in summation get rid of the vermin ASAP and stay healthy.

YT Addict | I free feed Maggie and Bogey and I worry about the same thing happening. We've had some mice get in over the years in the fall but I haven't seen or heard anything in a long time. I used to hear scratching inside the wall, ewwww. They totally gross me out!!! In the fall we set traps with peanut butter (hidden from pets) on them just in case.

| I mean, aren't Yorkies first and foremost Mousers? So, I just don't see being too worried about her going after a mouse. I know diseases can be spread so I would look into getting rid of the mice but for ME and MY health..not really Mandie's. Just my take on it. With that said, your story was friggin hillarious!! I can so picture the scene! Heck, I've had a similar scene with critters/bugs. (ever see those big flying roaches we have here in the south but find a way to get in your house every once in a while.....ICK!!!) The dryer sheet idea is a great one. I am actually going to check out that sound repellent thing that Rosemarie posted. I don't have mice, but I have moles and chipmunks in my yard...wondering if that thing would work on them. I sick of tunnels all over my back yard lol

YT 1000 Club Member | You're quite right, they are, and were bread to deal with that and other (even larger) Varmints. If that had been my guys, they'd have had that Mouse in pieces before I could get a Plastic Bag, and try to take it away from them. I have not seen a Mouse in the yard or house, since I've had Yorkies. Along with the Varminteering, an additional part of that construct included them being able to do that job, without Human intervention. That's why one has trouble on recalls, and is what makes Yorkies quite stubborn.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I had a cat that would hunt and always eat the mice. The dogs usually torment (play) with the mice then kill them.

| Terriers including Yorkies were bred to kill rodents. I am quite sure Gracie would love to attack and kill a mouse. She has the shaking activity down to a science. It amazes me how she can shake a toy so vigorously and not hurt her neck! I would surely pick up the dog food and water at night and when you are not at home as you don't want your pets sharing a dish with a rodent. The best way to get rid of mice is to find their entry way into the building. If they were upstairs then they must be climbing up inside the walls. Usually they get in either at ground level or down in a basement. You can try traps and the like but until the entrance is closed off you will continue to get rodents inside. |
