| I almost hit a Yorkie I was on my way to pick my Grand daughter up from school and this little Yorkie ran right in front of my car. I pulled to the side of the road, mind you I had all four of mine with me and they were barking like crazy, I got out of my car and he ran from me, he went into a yard so I went and knocked on the front door. An elderly man came to the door and I asked him if he had a Yorkie he said yes, Sammy. I told him that I had almost hit his dog and he said thats strange he usually stays around the house when I let him out. I just had to walk away. No fenced in yard and no supervision, just lets him out to run the neighborhood. If I go by there again and he is out I just might take him.

| Oh I hate that! My Tink's first owners used to just let her out too, just to run around. I don't get it!

| You know, when I had a 100lb lab, he roamed the yard without a fence and pretty much stayed in the yard. My Huey, on the other hand, goes deaf and forgets his name if is is off leash in an open area, which is why he is NEVER off leash outside except at my parents house in a fenced in yard. There is no way I would chance letting him loose anywhere unless I am ever able to get him trained to come when called, which will probably be the 1st of never. Even then, how do I know one of the neighborhood speed demons wouldn't run him over or a big bird fly off with him or the next door neighbors cats eat him like a mouse. As tiny as he is, even at a whopping 7.5 lbs, there is no way... Once again, my assessment of humans is that the collective IQ is dropping precipitously. (Note-see movie Idiocracy-unfortunately closer to the truth than anyone understands...)

| Hard to believe anyone would let their dog roam freely without supervision but I know lots of people do it. Any dog will leave the yard if they see something they feel they need to investigate. |

Anyway, OP if you were to rescue that little one, just be careful that you're not seen I'd hate to see you get into any trouble. There is more than likely a leash law where you live, perhaps you could report this person to animal control?

| The sad thing is if you had hit that little guy you would have been so devastated ...and it would not have been your fault

| Some neighbors down the road and across the street from us have a St Bernard- they got her after their last dog was killed by being hit by a car. You'd think that they would have learned, but no, not right away. The SB used to roam everywhere- especially to the park directly across the street from them and she would scare all of the kids that were trying to play there. The SB, Piper, would sometimes walk down to my house and get my GSP all worked up. Multiple times I would see cars almost hit Piper as she walked down the middle of the street or just crossed without caution. Finally, one day, I'd had enough. Piper was AGAIN in my yard so I went out with my GSP's heavy leash, hooked it on Piper's collar and walked her back home. I was trying to attatch her to the tie out they had for her when the owners opened the door and asked what they could help with. I said, as nicely as possible, that I was returning their dog that had gotten off of her tie out because she was all the way down at my house. I said that I saw her almost get hit by 2 cars as she wandered down the street and that I KNOW they'd be heartbroken if their new dog was killed the same way their last one was- not to mention that I'd hate for them to lose her to animal control for being off leash out of her yard. I was being a VERY concerned neighbor. Well, wouldn't you know, that dog hasn't been off leash since! (Or if she has she has stayed at home!) =) Now some other neighbors, on the other hand, if I can catch their dog again I WILL be calling animal control right away!

| Yeah, I have kin folks down the street that have a tiny chihuahua girl(unspayed!) that they refuse to walk on a leash. She gets away from them frequently and almost always winds up at my house. I have given them harnesses and leashes, but they just don't use them. Their son (in his 30's) actually started an argument with DH when DH suggested () that if the REALLY loved that dog, then walking it on a leash would be better than letting it run without. The dufus seems to think it is "better for her to be free than tied to a leash" when walking. I'm hoping that she doesn't end up like their dog before her--hit on the road! |

| If you can catch a dog in your yard, put it in your garage or somewhere safe and call animal control. If the owner steps forward to claim the dog the owner will be fined and MAYBE they will learn a lesson from it. Maybe not but if it continues to happen eventually the dog will no longer be in their possession and that will probably be better for the dog in the long run.

| That is just horrible! When my parents bought a the house we live in now 5 or 6 years ago, it was a brand new just built home and right after we moved in my parents called the guy who does the fences in the development. It took a couple of weeks before the fence was done, due to the guy having many jobs on his hands including ours, and when we took the dogs (there was only 2 of them at that time) out it was on leash or if they were good off leash but there was always one or multiple people out there with them. More people need to be more careful with their pets, even if yo trust your dog you should still watch them.

| I am so sorry you had to go through this because I can imagine the terrible feeling of leaving a pup with an irresponsible owner. Heartbreaking!
