| Age of first haircut? Okay, Lucy is 13 weeks old and is not fully vaccinated so she obviously cannot go somewhere to get a trim, but the hairs around her eyes are too long and her little hiney needs to be buzzed again b/c I noticed that it is starting to mat. I was wondering how old your yorkie was when they got their first haircut? And what should I do in the mean time? I keep saying I am going to trim the hair around her eyes whenever she is sleeping, but I am so nervous that I will poke her eye. She is a very light sleeper due to those big ole ears that let her pick up every little sound. Any tips? And will little nail scizzors work for around her eye? I figured that would be better than a bigger pair but I have never done this before!

| Don't use nail scissors! You can buy little scissors made for dogs. They have rounded ends so you don't have to worry about putting their eyes out. We had Dudley trimmed at about 5 months but you can do at any age once he has his shots and it is safe health-wise. I wouldn't clip too close until warmer weather sets in. They get cold very easily. Good luck with your baby.

| Well I am glad I kept chickening out! Do they sell the scissors at Petsmart? I thought 5 months sounded good but do you do the "hygienic" trim yourself then? Maybe Lucy's hair grows super fast or something. I like her hair on her body the way it is, but I wasn't sure if the other things needed to be done sooner than her first haircut. Thanks for the replies!

| i'm planning to take bunjee to petsmart for his first cut prolly next month when he turns 14 or 16 weeks. petsmart's grooming has a puppy package for $15 for pups under 5 months which will include bath, dry, nail trim, ears plucked, face and hiney trim, but they leave the body hair alone. i might pay a little extra to have them brush his teeth too. i want to see how they do it. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | 5 month old freaked Dayzee freaked earlier this week. We got her bathed, blown dry, and nails clipped. We've been trying to desensitize her to the clippers. I took Dayzee to the breeder this morning and 3 of us could not hold her without her grrring to comb her hair to put a barratte in or trim the eye hairs. This is the first puppy I've ever had that the groomer told me to take her home--no trimming--or we'd be taking her to the doggie shrink. Anyone try the herbal supplements for going to the groomer or vet??? |

| Your puppy can go to the groomer after the first 2 sets of shots. I think the third one adds rabies so not really necessary for grooming purposes. We usually trim pads and sanitary on first time puppies and if the puppy is too nervous we just turn on the clippers and turn them backwards and let the puppy hear the buzzing around her face with no actually clipping happening. Otherwise if he/she isn't too nervous maybe clip ear tips. If you want to clip around her eyes yourself buy some thinners for a more natural look. We never use sissors around the corners of the eyes. With the thinners you can clip pretty close to the eyes with no chance of poking. If your puppy jumps around alot just keep pretending to clip stuff and when she gets tires and stops moving for a couple seconds praise her like crazy. Don't put it off too long. Best to get her used to grooming ASAP. And nail trimming! |

| My guy is 14 weeks old and has been groomed (haircut) by me twice. I plan to keep him in a puppy cut and can easily do this myself....plus, I can do the ears, nails, etc. I have groomed my other two dogs for years. Still - I took them in occasionally- once or twice a year - just to give myself a break. If I ever decide to let my Yorkie's hair grow out - we'll be going to a groomer. Now - the only problem for me (and it would be the same problem for a groomer) is that my little pup is a real wiggleworm. But, we're working on that. Carol Jean |
