So frustrated I have been potty training Milly to go outdoors since I brought her home (which is 5 weeks ago). Things are going good, with the occasional accident. Well today it was snowing/sleeting, I went to take her out and NOPE, she would not go. It's like she is scared of it or doesnt like being wet. Even if she is in mid pee and a leaf falls beside her, she scoots off ... kind of cute but at the same time, frustrating. I need some advise on how to get her to go potty outside when its snowing, sleeting or just drizzling. Thanks so much, Shelly

I had the same problem. Brandi hates cold and wet weather. She would just sit the with this pitiful look and doing the little dog shake looking at me and wondering why I was doing this to her. She just won't go outside in bad weather so I got potty pads for her. Everyone's happy, no more going outside in bad weather or getting up in the middle of the night to take her out. She pottys indoor and outdoor now.

I'm worried that she will go all over the house if I try and train her on pads for when the weather is yucky. I also have more dogs and I dont want them to go in the house aswell. Hmmm, hopefully she will snap out of this

I know how you feel, my Joel is fully potty trained now and always tells me when he has to go and if he finds out its raining he'll just go pee somewhere without telling me So I just keep an eye on him extra when its raining and when I finaly get him to potty outside he gets lots of treats and praise, so its slowly working

| Burr tttooo cold to pottttttttttttie: Yorkies are used to being pampered and spoiled and they are smart. They don't want to be outside in the wind, rain, snow or cold, like us, they love comfort. So sure they hate going out to potty in bad weather, and prefer the kitchen throw rug for a bad weather potty and your lap to nap in. As a trainer I think training them to to use an inside pee-pad should be taught as a puppy. It is easier than trying to teach an older dog. Maybe some one else has some good hints about how to cross train an older dog.

You might try getting her a doggy rain coat and a winter coat. It may make her feel better about the cold weather. Yorkies don't have an undercoat like other dog breeds do and they do get cold much easier than other breeds. Gracie loves to go potty outside but she does use pee pads when the weather is bad. She was trained first to the pads and then to the outside. She knows exactly where her potty is and never goes any where else in the house. Do you stand right with your puppy so she will be less afraid? Maybe if you stand with her and she is leashed she will be less inclined to move away when she gets startled.

Lucy was the same way during training. She hated getting wet. But when training to go outside, your pup must go in inclement weather too. So, we brought her outside in the rain. Eventually, she began to go outside - however, when the weather is bad, she just goes right outside the house and hustles straight back into the warm house! I also purchased a raincoat which I found to be cumbersome. If you decide to use a coat, I'd suggest getting your baby used to it BEFORE the bad weather is outside. Lucy spent more time trying to wriggle out of it than focussing on her 'business.' It was distracting. I DID purchase Canadian Muttluks all weather booties (extra small) for when we get snow. It is a bit of a pain to get them on her feet. I think she'll appreciate them though. My dauther helps me get them on her paws. I also purchased paw wax (Musher's Secret) that you put on the paws to make a barrier against snow/salt in the roadways. I haven't used it yet but it may help. Again, the important thing is to get your pup used to wearing the coat/boots before the bad weather. It's equally important for your puppy to understand that she must go go go outside ALWAYS - if that's what you're training to do. Good luck. Tracey

I always stand right beside her. She also sometimes won't go unless Tank(my Rotti) is outside with her. I have sweaters and a raincoat for her. When it's raining, I will put the raincoat on. She is ok with it being on. I'm thinking she may be more scared than anything and that would explain needing Tank outside with her. I know the rain and snow will make her more uncomfortable, which might add to her being more timid. Im heading out to Petsmart today to get her a warmer coat and maybe some booties. Another quick question, Anytime time she goes out and gets damp or wet I brush her to make sure she doesnt mat anywhere. Is this necessary? I don't mind doing it but I wonderer if I am being too over cautious.

Sometimes I don't do it immediately but I do dry her off with a towel. As I dry her legs, I feel the fur to see if there's any knotted areas. Can't hurt to brush her out if you have the time. It gets your baby used to being handled and brushed frequently too. Good Luck. Tracey | |

I take Gracie out for a walk at least twice a day. I usually do comb her when we come inside. When the grass is wet in the morning I have to make sure to do a quick comb through to make sure she doesn't get tangles. If I don't get her combed out when her legs and belly are still damp it will be much harder to get out any tangles out once her hair dries. Now that the leaves are coming off the trees her fur picks up some of the small leaves so as fall progresses she will start looking like a walking shrub by the time she comes in. Another reason for a quick comb through. When it gets a little cooler her sweaters and coats will help keep her from picking so much stuff up. During the summer I also use a flea comb when we come in to make sure she hasn't picked up any fleas or other bugs during our travels. Once your little one gets more mature she probably will not be quite so timid and you may even find she starts to like being out there taking care of business.
