First Welcome to YT. There are many many articles here, on puppy training and rearing, etc, that can be found in our library.

If you did not get his health records from the previous owner, please try to, or at least get the name of his first vet, so that your vet can request his previous records.

Sleep area: He should have a safe and warm sleep area. I like to use a crate, or you can use an expen for him, when you can't supervise the interaction between him and your toddler.

Exercise: Young and growing puppies do best will a few exercise sessions a day, of a shorter duration. He is 9mths old, and probably would be fine with at least 30 minutes of walking a day, plus a couple of short 5 minute or so play and training sessions.

Right now, everything is very new to him, after all he has been displaced from the only home he has ever known. He is probably scared and nervous, not knowing what to expect in this new place.

You will have to train your child how to interact with a puppy, and keep both safe from one another. It is advisable not to allow children to pick up a puppy, as they can be easily dropped and injured. Pet a dog with one hand. Play with puppy with child sitting on the floor. Don't allow your child to "chase" the puppy. Also no pulling on ears or tails. Have a safe place for the puppy to go to, to get out from underfoot. You child should not put her face near his, not for a very long time at least.

The dog is growling at the child can be from a whole lot of reasons; a) everything including this child is strange to him, he is saying and warning stay back, I don't want you near to me. This is a good response, not the best, but good. Do NOT force their interactions at all. If he doesn't want her near to him right now, that is okay; and will likely change over the next few weeks. b) young children often act in ways that are scarey to dogs. Their unco-ordinated movements, waving arms and hands, and high pitched tones can be very off-putting.

Please try to get your new puppy into your vet for a wellness check up. Have them check him out thoroughly, ears, eyes, structure, paws, etc.

Once again welcome and enjoy your stay.

The household you adopted him from sound like it was..........."very active" ??? 5 kids, no bonding with the mistress of the house....poor little man has probably had to fend for himself, while fighting to survive 5 kids.....I would not let my own small child around him until he gets a little more accustomed to the idea that he doesnt need to fight to survive in your home! Please dont let your daughter get her little face down close to him....like trying to kiss on him....no doubt he will snap at her and may bite her in her face....I think you are going to have to let the pup decide when he is ready to associate with your daughter...not something you want to force on either of them....but I am NOT a trainer....people with much more experience integrating kids and traumatized dogs will hopefully help with this challenge! Good luck!

Good luck! Royal Canin makes a food especially for Yorkies, that's what I use. But there are lots of good foods out there.

First of all, welcome to YT! I agree that he is probably just scared at the moment. The above advice is great!

Royal canin however, is not all that great of a food.
You want a food that has meats as the first ingredients, preferably with little-to-no corn, wheat, or soy.

I reccomend Wellness, Blue buffalo, and Innova brand foods.

Believe me, there are alot of passionate people here, with loyality to THEIR food....Royal Canin is what I choose to feed my dogs for the last 20+ years, with absolutely NO problems from any dog I have ever raised on RC, as well as no recalls on the food.....they have formulated diets that address all life stages of your baby, as well as the breeding sires and dams, thru whelping, lactating and eventual weaning of the puppies. RC DOES contain meat as the first ingredient, actually first several ingredients.........the big issue with some people seems to be grains included in the formulas....unless your dog is having issues with grains, their formulas are not detrimental with the amounts of grain/meat ratio.. I also respect the quality management of the processing of the food, ie NO RECALLS!! I personally try to refrain from coming on here and calling one specific food "not very good" or even "crap" as some will do.....I personally like and recommend Royal Canin to my new owners, and if asked, I will always tell them if the puppy/dog develops issues with any of the formulas...with ANY dog food, ....then they should by all means change brands. There are sites that you can register with so that you receive alerts to any dog food recalls immediately...subscribe to one of those.....ANY dog food can have issues at any given time......I remember Blue Buffalo had a recall because they were putting too much of a specific vitamin into the food and it made alot of dogs very ill...so there CAN be "healthy stuff" in dog food other than corn, etc, that can have a negative impact on your dogs health.

I totally understand. But there have been recalls on RC. There have been recalls on the foods I feed to my pets as well. Most foods I have researched have had recalls. I just base my reccomendations off of the ingredients label and what is good for the dog.

People have had no problems feeding foods like purina and pedigree, which is the lowest quality food I've ever seen. I wasnt saying RC was awful, I mean its not the worst food available at all. I just see people spending outragous amounts on foods containing grain, while you can easily get grain free & by product free food for cheaper.

Welcome to YT. Please check out our extensive library. You will find many helpful threads about almost anything you need to know. It is true there many foods to choose from. We also use Royal Canin and have had no problems, that is only our base kibble. Our Yorkies also get fresh steamed Veggies, Chicken breast, and other lean meats, low fat cottage cheese, brown rice, apple, pear, sweet potato and plain yogurt. We use raw green beans and home made jerky for training treats. Please read the toxic food list, grapes and raisins are very harmful to dogs. You have got good information and suggestions from the other posters so I won't repeat the same things. Again Welcome we are glad you found us !
