| Front Door Barrier Do you have one to contain your fur butt(s)? If so, what do you use? Or are they trained not to run out when the front door opens? We live in a condo complex which is very much like an apartment, so we have indoor hallways & stairs. I still block the front door w/ an ex pen (took some panels off) & made a gate. It also holds their water bottle. No big deal if they run out (they usually don't), bc they have no way of leaving the building, unless someone left the door open (we're not allowed to, in case of a fire)...but even then, it's a gated community. I just don't want them running out & making a habit of it (yay I am FREE!) & possibly soiling the carpet on the hallway. There was a family friend's dog that ran out of their house & got run over by a car right in front of their house! He sadly passed away & they were devastated. Just wondering, if they had a barrier/gate, they could've avoided the tragedy...

| We have taught Callie to stay when the door is open and now even if we forget to say stay and the door is open and no one is in between her and the door she will still wait for the screen door to close before she stands up to look out it but just about every time we are still very careful with the door and her. When she was a puppy before she was trained it was a nightmare because she got out two or three times and chasing her down was hard but thank god she loves people and would go to the first neighbor who said her name. Last year when we had family over I was going to leave with my aunt and Callie got out and it scared the crap out of me but all she wanted was to follow me and go with me she didn't go anywhere but I still would never let her out on purpose and gave the family visiting a lecture about making sure she didn't get out and don't hold the door open.

| No I dont because our front yard is fenced. However it doesnt matter because even if we are outside the fence they stay where we are. Jewels has always did that and chachi started when he was 2. I didnt train them to do it they just did it on there own

| I use a baby gate to contain the pups inside. We use the garage door rather than the front door so the gate is at the garage door. The front door is only used for guests and packages. They understand not to run out of the front door but are very curious when someone is there and I still keep a VERY close eye on them. I'm sorry to hear about your family friend's dog. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I use/train both mine mainly for Security purposes. Not attack, but alarm. And, in doing that, I have to allow them to "charge", which unavoidably gives them permission to go outside and confront an intruder. And when they get it right, they're highly praised, and when wrong, they just don't get petted for it. I use that positive reinforcement in all areas. Never actually scold one, just don't praise. I also use small barriers to keep my guys out of areas of the house, I don't want them in. The barriers can be small narrow shelves or a piece of cardboard, both which they could jump over easily, but don't, It's just there to set a limit on whereabouts. I could easily open the front door (no fence to keep them from the world there) put a piece of cardboard in the doorway, and be absolutely sure they wouldn't cross it.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | We are currently working on our stay command when the door is opened. KS is doing really good but she gets so excited and when she starts barking its impossible to get her to stay right now. We are working on it though. Baby gates do work well we got a basic one at walmart for like $15 and keep our master bedroom blocked off at all times. Good luck to you.

| I have a baby gate that I can step over in the Foyer to the Front Door, if someone happens to come to the Front Door. However we always go out thru the kitchen to the laundry room and then out to the garage to leave.

| We have the front hall gated off- I was lucky enough to find some beautiful wooden folding gates at a yardsale! With 5 people and 3 dogs it was crazy trying to keep the dogs safe. We also put a string of bells on the house doorknob when the overhead garage is open so we all know not to let them out that way (they know when the big door is up, the little sneaks!) |

| After Teddy got out and chased the UPS truck (because grandpa never gives the "stay" command before swinging the door wide open ), I put up a baby gate in one area to block the garage door and an x-pen surrounding the front door. Both are inconvenient and not terribly attractive, but for us, they are necessary with the street only 45' out the front door.

| Tibbe was a door darter but I taught him to stay when the door is opened and not rush to it. Each time he does this he still gets a nice little bit of praise & sometimes a treat!

| Front Door barrier I have a 'disappearing screen' that slides over the open door, and is made of heavy plastic screen door material in a solid frame. We find it useful to keep bugs out in the summer and dog in at any time. It works well and is a great barrier. Only problem it is quite expensive. My 9 pound yorkie usually will not cross over the open door, but I am sure if he was attracted to something he may! |

| I have a real big "trust" issue....I firmly believe NO amount of training, will prevent them from giving into that predator instinct to chase....if they are sitting all polite and well behaved by the open front door, and Rocky the Squirrel darts by, I will bet a weeks salary they are going after the squirrel! That is just as much part of their being, as panting when they are hot. So, I keep mine confined in my sun room/den.....I have baby gates across ALL doors that are exit doors from the house, in addition to my foyer being blocked by an x-pen. I have an 8 foot expandable gate across the large arched enterance to the great room....my entire home inside, is fenced and crossed fenced!!! Kind of ruins the elegance of the home, but I do what I have to do to keep these babies safe! You read on here all the time about workmen or guests or kids going out the front door and leaving the door ajar and the baby darts out the door. Or, like "Teddy", who saw a cat, gave chase, and was gone out the front door! That is just something I do not want to have to try to get over....I have ENOUGH drama in my life without going thru that! I read about these incidences and my heart breaks for the people, but most of all for the pup, who finds itself alone and frightened and possibly in harms way, just wanting mommy! |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | No gate needed we have a full view glass door. We leave the main door opened to enjoy the sunlight but I have learned that out of sight out of mind works best with training them to stay when someone comes to the door. We are also working on our stay commands when visiters come. It not easy since they are not pups any more. Been working on it for the past year and it is ok but could be better. I think that it can be done if you wanted to start to teach her to sit & stay and eliminate the gate. Its will take time and maybe some bribes but its possible to get it done. Probably easier with just one than my four !
