| Help Please? Will My Bailey Grow out of Whining? Hi Yorkie Talk! I am a new proud owner of a yorkie male (Bailey McKenzie) who will be 9 weeks old this Friday. Unfortunately I work during the day (7am - 3:30pm) and poor Bailey does not like to be left alone (who would?). The first day Monday, my sisters fiance watched him, Tuesday - was the 1st day I put him in his kennel and boy oh boy....i couldn't leave him because he whined and cried for about 15 minutes. I was late to work because I couldn't leave him, so I ended up taking him to work with me; Wednesday - he had to stay at home until 11:30 when my sisters fiance rescues him. I then went and purchased a baby gate to put up in my bathroom.....I leave the door open and section off the bathroom for his food, wee wee pads, house, and a box to prevent him from going over to the other half of the bathroom......but Bailey doesn't like that either....well at least when he knows I'm getting ready to leave....so Thursday and Friday, he cried....that is until....my sisters fiance rescued him.....I feel really bad leaving him, but I don't have much of a choice. Will he ever get accustomed to having to spend a few hours by himself without making me feel so awful? Thanks |

| I know what you mean. I have to go to work also. The first week I had my puppy, he spent my time at work at my sister's house. But the time quickly came when I had to leave him at home. I just go - I don't wait around to see if he's crying. I don't want to hear it. I leave lights on, the radio on, and there is another dog and a bird in the house. My neighbors come over to visit him shortly after I leave for work, and they say he is usually sleeping when they pop their heads in the door. They play with him for a while and when they leave, they say he's usually ready for another nap. I think that leaving "quickly" helps. This way, I'm gone before he even knows it. I get him busy with other things and, of course, make sure he has every thing he needs, and I take off. I think "long goodbyes" are harder on a puppy. They know for sure that you are leaving if you fuss around making a big deal of it. And, for heaven's sake --- don't say "Good bye." My pets are very used to my being gone part of the time. They have all grown up this way. It was only hard when they were very young and left alone the first few times. But we've grown through this. And WOW - are they happy to see me when I get home!!!!! Good luck! Carol Jean Last edited by SnowWa; 12-10-2005 at 06:26 PM. |

| Welcome. How cute is that in the house! Some do and some don't. They are all different. They are all the same in that they are social doggies and don't like to be left alone. There are lots of people on here that work and leave them alone while they work, though, and perhaps they can give you some good advice. I can tell you one thing and that is that some are criers and some aren't. The criers usually just cry less eventually, but that is just the way they are.

| I agree, some do some don't. My little Rowdy (Yorkie) does fine when I leave - he doesn't whine or cry at all. My 13 year old schnauzer has horrible separation anxiety when he is left alone - but now that Rowdy is here, he does much better and doesn't cry when I leave. So, you just never know. Rowdy is not real clingy though, even when I'm at home. He plays with his toys with me or by himself - either way, he's fine. He can be very independent. So, I really think it depends on the personality.

| Of course I have a full gang to entertain themselves but when it is time to leave and I am fully ready to go everyone gets a special treat. I only give this treat when I am leaving so they know. When I am getting ready they are all following me where ever I go but when I put them into the kitchen they are all waiting for their treat, they grab it and go to their special pillows and I walk immediately out the door. They are happy to see me go because they know they are getting something special.

That is a GREAT idea! My mom does that with her daschaund - when she wants him to go to bed - he gets a treat, so he is always READY to go to bed. I'd never thought about giving a treat when I am leaving!!! Actually Rowdy doesn't protest when I leave, he is used to me going to work every morning (my hubby is retired though) - BUT when we get the suitcases out, he goes NUTS!
