Peanut has Pancreatitis

I don’t know if Peanut just had a really mild case of it- when the Vet felt his belly he said it felt good, I saw the test and it was Positive for Pancreatitis. It had 2 dots and one of the dots was darker than the other- Peanut wasn’t showing any symptoms that your babies had- He did throw up and has really bad diarrhea Sat Morning, he was acting sickish since he ate that Texas Toothpick, but it was on and off- Really strange!

Was the test they gave peanut called a lipase snap? Im assuming it is since you said 2 dots. When Bella was first Diagnosed she also vomited and had the poops pretty bad, majorly dehydrated had to stay in Hosp. She actually was pooping blood. bad. Now I catch it before she even knows she has it lol. Like I said she just cant get comfy and I know its coming. The goal in all this is to try and NOT make the pancreas have to work. so easily digested foods are key. You would be surprised foods that are hard to digest.
Dogs, being carnivores have no digestive enzymes in their saliva like an omnivore does so for them digestion does not and can not begin in the mouth. When our dogs are fed a cooked diet or diet with grains and vegetables in it, the pancreas gets over stimulated and overworked and in turn becomes inflamed. The inflammation itself can activate the digestive enzymes before they’re released in the intestines which can result in triggering the process of “self digestion”. The enzymes from the inflamed pancreas can also leak out in the abdominal cavity and damage the abdominal lining and other organs which only serves to add to a serious and often life-threatening situation.

From what I understand wd is good for diabetic dogs? and is low fat? id is more gastrointestinal. I think wd is gastrointestinal as well but not as much as the id. I could be wrong but I read a few articles and thats what I am gathering.

I am so happy to read that little Mr. Pnut is doing well. It is hard not to give them something "extra" when they stare at you like they are starving. I remember one YT member saying that she gives her little one one or two pieces of kibble as a treat and they love it. Worth a try.

Its torture until they get used to it. Good news tho you can still "share" your food. you just have to eat healthier!!! Mine will jump thru hoops for a plain ole no salt added green bean. I also feed baby carrots a lot. Healthy for all of us!

next time you want to give him something extra why not try some green tripe, it smells gawd awful but the little beggars love it and it's really really good for them

My pups get tiny pieces of sweet potatoes and green beans for extra treats and love them!

I also feed bits of green beans to Barney who has had a history of pancreatitis. I also give him sweet potatoes, but didn't for many months following his illness. I also give him organic chicken breast which he loves. I find that it's easier to feed my dogs things I eat like chicken rather than venture into game and exotic things that turn my stomach. I'm so glad Pnut is feeling back to himself. It warms my heart to hear that.

You give sweet pot. raw or bake it? I think thats my next food Im going to introduce. Im very selective and slow at introducing. Scared!

I give it baked when I make it. I cheat and buy canned sweet potatoes since I use them as a staple carbohydrate in their diets. It's just easier to order cases than to cook them up all the time. I don't give raw potatoes.

I think Ill try baked then.
I also buy the no salt added green beans by the case but with them coming in season fresh I may blanch and freeze some for use in the winter IF they like em fresh.

My late Molly who had Chronic Pancreatitis among other health issues ate the I/D and the W/D and she did really well on both of these foods.

I'm so sorry you and Peanut are going through this. I experienced the same thing. I know the guilt you feel. I gave Calleigh a little ice cream and some cream cheese every now and then. She had the same symptoms. I immediately took her to the vet. He did the tests also. She is just fine now. The vet put her on Purina, not sure which one, but she in on the Purina OM [overweight management]. She isn't heavy, but eats like a pig. She does have an extra pound on her right now. I give her carrots and lettuce which she loves. Also, green beans, apples, anything she can have that is good for her "without fat." Fat is the culprit.
I'm happy to hear Peanut is doing better. You just have to keep the fats away. Try not to beat yourself up. I'm sure you were just trying to make your pup happy. Now that you know, you'll be on the right track.

You can cut sweet potatoes into strips and put them in the oven on a cookie sheet. Bake for about 3 hours at 220 degrees. You can bake longer for a crispier treat. Remember that they will shrink up during the baking time so cut them a bit bigger than what you want them to turn out to be. It's about the same as using a dehydrator. I keep them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

I have a pup with lymphangectasia and she is on sweet potatoes and tilapia. I cook her potatoes in the microwave.
My pups love her because she is the one who brought sweet potatoes in to this house!
