I'm so sorry to hear about Peanut...and I can empathize with the worry. But like everyone says, don't beat yourself up about it, it happens. Animal fat is the main culprit...So no more high fat dairy, and stick with fruits and veggies for treats...I also use Organic Corn Puff cereal for a treat (my girls think its fabulous) and it has 0% fat. As they are on a grain free diet, the little corn they get from the cereal treats doesn't seem to bother them at all. For chewing, we have the deer antlers and their favorite the "himalayan dog chew"...also low in fat.

As a side note: my father had a hard time resisting the urge to share what he was eating, so now I keep a bowl of "appropriate" treats beside his chair. So, he can share when he is eating, but the girls are only getting what they are allowed. Makes life much easier!

As for "table scraps" I don't like that term. It always sounds like stuff you don't eat on your plate and are going to throw away, like the fat cut off a steak, burnt edges, or leftovers. I know none of us YTers would give our yorkies that. I still give Uni plenty of people food, in the form of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, fruits, etc. She is now on a grain free diet, and has not had a relapse of pancreatitis since the first.

Now about the Texas Toothpicks. I guess you didn't know, but Merrick has had many recalls of their products in recent years. I used to LOVE the TT. The first time I tried them was at the Muttropolis meetup in Newport Beach, remember when we first met? Uni loved them so I bought a few more. They used to last about a week long each. Then I started buying them by the bag instead of by the piece. They looked much darker and only lasted I swear 10 minutes each! I emailed Merrick and asked what's up. They said they haven't changed a thing (yeah right) and here's a free bag. T hen come to find all the recalls. I haven't gave them since them. Throw them out! I wouldn't even donate them to my shelter, I don't want to make the poor dogs there sick! But as far as I know (or what I was led to believe) the TT's are not high in fat.
Riley was the Same Way.... It used to take him a week to chew one up.... then it started taking only about 15 mins. Same thing happened to us. I got a bag that was really dark and nasty looking... contacted Merrick and they mailed another bag.

The other thing I was noticing was there were long pieces of bone in it..... toward the end..... that he was not able to chew up.... When I gave him one I would watch him with it and when it got to the end I would throw the bone part out..... Some people say there are long thin bone fragments all throughout the middle of it.... I have only seen the one toward the end of it... it is usually about 1 1/2 - 2 inches long.

I was then told that they were very "High" in Fat and once I heard that I have never given another one since.

I just looked it up:

Guaranteed Analysis
Crude Protein (Min.) 50.00%
Crude Fat (Min.) 18.00%
Crude Fiber (Max.) 9.00%
Moisture (Max.) 5.00%

I am so sorry for Peanut I hope he is feeling better.

Sophie Kate also has Pancreatitis and I feed her only Hills ID, she eats it with no problem so far (last problem was over a year ago).

For treats I give her Charlee Bear treats, they are low in fat and made in the USA (no ingredients from China). I also give her plain Cheerio's and have good luck with is so far.

The training people not to give them food is so hard. I have had to explain to people that people food will make Sophie Kate very ill and in one case I had to threaten to send them her Vet bill (that worked well). When I know I am not going to be around to keep an eye on her I will lock her in my room, I am not risking someone giving her a snack and havig my baby be in pain or ill.

Hi everyone- thank you again for all the support! When I picked Pnut up yesterday he did seem a little better. You can tell he was not 100% but a little better is better than nothing!

I had to drop him off again for more Iv fluids and injections- they will retest him today @ 3. I think until I get that call that he is better im going to be a mess- the tech said the 2 day treatment usually does help so I'm crossing my fingers and praying!!

I have a very cute pic I want to share, I'm on my phone right now- hopefully.I can get some things done and log on using my laptop-

Dh is finally home- he was on a fishing trip- I wad so stressed about the amount of Pnuts bill, I didn't have dh to turn to- he assured me everythibg will be fine and he will sell his tractor to help us get over this hill!! He is the best! I'm so thankful he loves Pnut as much as I do!!

My lil guy also gained some weight- he was 4# today he is 5.4!! With his Lp it is hard to excersise him, but once he is recovered we are walking ( small walks) everyday to help him get healthy- no more dairy anything or human snacks of any kind! My baby means too much to me to go through this again, they are tiny treasures and should be treated as such! Besides he will get over begging for food once he doesn't get any!!

Once I get the call, I will let you guys know! I hope and pray it has cleared up!!

I was always under the impression that it was a lower in fat treat compared to their other products!

As for the bone, all of ours had the bone in it. Often times you could see it sticking out the wide end. Uni loved to pull the bone out in one piece. Once she pulled it out, then I threw it away.

This is EXACTLY what I do when my brother comes! The babies think they are eating his same meal, right off his plate, and they are actually getting little pieces of healthy stuff they can have! Everyone is happy!

I am so sorry Peanut is/was ill. I had the same scare a couple of weeks ago with Sammy (not a yorkie..but still one of my babies) ..dh was TOLD by the vet to be very careful with feeding anything off the plate. Sammy's "attack" may have been caused by a bit of port lion!!

I also do not feed texas toothpick or bullysticks.. partly because everytime I have all three become ill.. IKD or I wasn't sure if that was the cause but sure seamed like it to me!!!

I hope he gets better soon. I do understand about the cost.. on top of Sammy's problems my Bailey has a spinal injury and we are looking at surgery.. I am beside myself with worry but I just have to have faith.. and I have faith you will be ok

Just checking for updates. Peanut is still on our prayer list.
I do the good treat thing too. When my Mom is here she can't resist feeding them off her plate. So we have a goody bowl for her to 'share'. Everyone is happy. The best part is everyone is happy, like poster Sweetgirl said. And no one has had an upset tummy in a long time. Hugs for Peanut from Teresa and the gang

I have tried a few different types of bully sticks as they are the only chew item that I consider safe enough to give any dog to chew on. There were a couple of brands that were not of good quality. Red Barn and Merrick brands Gracie did not seem to like very much and when she did chew them she tended to get sick. Obviously I don't buy them anymore. I have had no problems with the Best Bully brand. I buy her the regular size and the most she can do with it is soften the end of it and cannot bite a piece off. I honestly don't know what I would do without them as she still gets the urge to chew sometimes and she will seek out things like plastic and wood to chew if I don't give her something safe. I consider any high fat item a risk for these little ones especially as treats. Bully sticks are suppose to be pure muscle. I think some brands are not treating the product in a safe manner though. Since no one is over seeing the pet food/treat industry you have to really trust the companies you deal with.

Hi guys! We are home- Pnut is resting, he seems to be feeling better, just worn out. The vet sent home 3 cans of hills w/d . I have to feed him all 3 cans then I can start him on a kibble-

Instead of retesting him today, the vet wants to retest him tomorrow. Since he has had 2 days of fluids he might not get a good reading-

We will know more tomorrow.. hopefully everything worked and it is better!! I'm taking him tomorrow about 5 I will let you all know! Thanks for the prayers- it means the world to us!!
