| Dog Parks or People Parks Hi Everyone. With the weather warming up and CoCo nearly done with all of her puppy shots I was wondering.....do any of you take your babies to dog parks or do you prefer people parks? Why, and what has been your experience(s)? I've never been to a dog park, but I just feel really weird about taking little CoCo to a dog park where I KNOW there are going to be super-huge dogs running around. I feel like at a people park, dog owners try to have a little more discipline over their dogs. |

| When we used to go to parks I would avoid off leash areas, I remember last summer me and a girl friend both experienced with dogs were walking Harley and we came across an off leash pit puppy. We have nothing against pits, but realize they take ALOT of training, and this puppy just ran up to us, jumped on my friend, licked her, then tried to jump up to me (who by now was holding Harley close in my arms) and the owner did nothing...and the puppy was HUGE We both agreed that poor puppy would likely be branded "one of those pit bulls" when he grew up cause his owner was clearly an indiot and didn't care to train him. So I guess I just caution you to assure that you never let your baby off leash until they have a RELIABLE emergency recall, and be cautious of the idiots with big dogs who don't care who their dogs jump on or disturb, cause you will likely meet hundreds of well trained dogs and owners, but it only takes one fool to mess everything up. I didn't really answer your question on which type of park, lol, if I had to choose it'd be a people park unless I knew every dog at the dog park (and the city I'm from that's actually possible cause it's small here and we know all the dog people).

| I take my 3 to a small dog park. This park has a section where only small dogs are allowed, and they have a great time. I would not recommend taking a yorkie to an all dog park where larger dogs are present. There is already a lot of variation in sizes at the small dog park, I wouldn't risk it in an all dog park.

| We hit up the dog park a few times a week. Love it, it works out great for us. Jackson always has a great time. We do go on the small dog side 99% of the time. The only time I let him on the bigger side is when nobody else is there, or I'm meeting a relative/friend who has a big dog and it's just us. We have 2 dog parks that we frequent so we start to see the same people and same dogs, around the same days/times, you learn who to avoid, and when you WANT to be there, etc. I LOVE it and Jax has an absolute blast. We like people parks too. Sometimes it's nice to go for a long leashed walk and just mind our own business. Here was us last spring at the dog park...

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I think dog parks are a great idea, but I'd stick to the small dog area, especially at first. There are some small dogs who can handle themselves in pretty much any crowd, but let them work up to that. In general, I think dogs get along better when they're off leash. They don't feel trapped, and I find they're less likely to act aggressively. Also, other dogs are less likely to gang up on your dog when he/she has the freedom to move around and let them know their limits. When I go to people parks, I leash mine whenever there are other dogs around and don't let them socialize for the reason described above. Even in Petco, I avoid letting other dogs approach mine. Just recently I broke the rule and the other dog snapped at mine. The owner was aghast, but I think it was because they were both leashed.

| We don't have a dog park very close to where we live. I don't think I would take her anywhere that there strange big dogs. My previous dog was attacked by another dog and since that experience I get very stressed when other dogs approach me when I am walking my dog. We have a very nice local park that has a picnic area and trails to walk on. Dogs are allowed there but not many people even take advantage of the trails with their pets. Gracie loves it and I feel very at ease there. I always pick her up when a larger dog approaches until I find out how the dog will react to her. Some dogs think that these little furry dogs are toys and want to play with them in a way that could be harmful. Always be ready to pick up your little one to protect him/her from other dogs. I know it may sound paranoid but it only takes one shake by a larger dog to kill or seriously hurt a small dog. I think the attraction of a small dog park would be having a place where your dog can run off lead. I'm sure Gracie would love that but as yet we don't have one close enough to us to be useful. |

| Callie loves dog parks but I would only suggest the ones that have a big dog side and a small dog side.

| Our park has one section fenced in for off-leash so we don't go in there because of the big dogs. Did you notice that owners of big dogs get offended when we pick up out babies? They all say how friendly their dog is etc. I try to tell them I'm sure he is, but if he just jumps and lands on my baby by accident she will get injured. They don't get it. I will let her down, but I get down with her. If it's in my neighborhood I am more willing to let them get to know each other, but usually only if it's a very calm dog. So, we were in the regualr part of the park, which by common sense is on-leash because it is not the fenced in "dog park." Some people must think the whole thing is off-leash...though the rules do say on leash... We decide to walk the trails in the woods and spot a medium sized black dog coming from our left, headed our way off leash. I picked Maggie up and called to the owner who was lagging behind, "are you going to put the leash on?" This way I know whether I can put her down, and then they can say hello....She retorts that if I had kept on walking it would have been fine and her dog would never have noticed. Really? I should have taken that chance? So I mention that this is not the off -leash section and she was very nasty and says how nice her dog is (like I should know?). She was just nasty and argumentive so we went on our way with husband telling me what a bit## she was loud enough for her to hear. My point was (I often lose my way..) that big dog owners just don't get the damage that can happen in a blink, so I keep her out of the dog park. Sometime I will take her to a neighboring town that has a separate small dog park. Also, Maggie has all her shots, but I don't know if the other dogs do. |

| Sophie Kate and I go to a the park all the time, we have a specific small dog area for off leash play. A few things I have learned about Sophie Kate at the park is she does not like a lot of dogs or humans around, about six dogs is all she can handle. Also she always picks one buddy and pals around with that dog but she keeps checking to make sure I am close by. I have had a few incidents where a owner of a large or medium size dog has come into the small dog area. In every case they have been asked politely to leave, in most cases they do but there is always a fe who want to argue that their dog gets along better with small dogs. We have had more of a problem with people bring in dogs who are not neutered (there is a rule that all dogs must be spayed and neutered). In those cases it is brought to the attention of the dog park supervisor who promptly asks the dog to leave.

| Wow, thanks for the info. I had no idea there were portions of the dog park that are/were "off leash" areas. That kinda freaks me out a little. Now, I've never been to a dog park before - EVER, not even with my Chihuahua. We just go to a regular park and I keep her on a leash. My ex and I would take her and our Pommie off their leashes only when we had like the whole (fenced-in) baseball field to ourselves. They loved to run around and play tag with each other. Other than that, they were ALWAYS on a leash! I don't know how I would feel about my little CoCo not being on a leash around other dogs. I think I'll start by taking her to the people park first - just to get her used to the idea of getting out and being on a leash and all. Then maybe we can gradually work our way up to the dog park. If I know CoCo's daddy, he will not like that idea. What is it about dads and their little girls? LOL |

| We go to our local park and weve had good experiences there. Weve only came accross one off leash dog and it was small. We were running into off leash dogs in our neighorhood all the time so luckily the park is a 2 minute drive from our house so we go there
