| Can not believe I did it I was cutting the dogs nails and I did Little Bit first and on the very first nail I cut to short and blood was everywhere. I was scared to death because I could not get it to stop bleeding. I called his vet and she called me back and said, Donna, Stop panicking. I have never seen a dog bleed to death because of a cut nail and believe me I have seen some bad ones. She told me to keep putting the corn starch on it and wrap it up so he can not lick it. He looked so sad with his little leg all wrapped up. She told me to give him half a pain killer and he would sleep and that it would stop bleeding. She said he needed to calm down to get the bleeding to stop and that the pain killer would help with the pain because it is very painful when you cut their nails to short. He went to sleep 20 minutes after I gave him the pain pill and he woke up this morning like nothing had ever happened. I felt so bad and I told DH that from now on they go to the groomer for nails. My eye sight aint what it use to be

| Sugar will stop bleeding very quickly, too...that's what my mom used on all of us growing up...and me for mine. Works great for when kids fall and bust a lip, too, 'cuz it tastes good. I am so sorry this happened to you...I worry about that myself. Hope your baby is okay very soon.

| Poor baby! I've done that before, but used flour to stop the bleeding. I've never had a problem with stopping the bleeding... That must have been scary!

| That must have been scary for you. It happens more than you think. I always keep some quick stop with me when cutting. Amazon.com: Kwik-Stop Styptic Powder .5 Ounce:... Try that stuff just in case it happens again. Stops it real quick and a bottle lasts forever.

| OMG that is one of my biggest fears It took me forever to try to trim my guys nails, I only take the tiny little tip end off about every two weeks. I would be like you and panick if I caused one to bleed. Glad that the bleeding finally stopped.

| With as many dogs as I have I do a lot of nail cutting and oddly the one that gives me the most trouble is the one with light nails. You would think she would be easy since I can see inside her nail but she constantly jerks and pulls and has funny nails. I have made her bleed a few times in her 10 years of life but anytime I cut her nails I start by being prepared.

| Ohhh, I have a "thing" about cutting nails and the cuticle and just shiver when I try it so my poor dog picks up on that. I finally had to get the Petipaws(?spelling?) or whatever it is called and Tibbe and I both have good success with that. This is the one area of owning a dog that I find is just awful - trying to keep nails short enough with the old-style clipper but the new gadgets for filing them down have helped me tremendously so I am fine with it now. And I have caused 3 nail bleeds over the years so I know how you feel. When it happened to my dogs, I kept imagining how much it must have hurt to have that cuticle cut like that and just got the Willies. So I guess I will always use the Petipaws type things from now on. Try not to feel too bad - you would never have done that if you could have helped it. Your baby will forgive.

| Yeah, I had to work up to it little by little with Tibbe but still let him know it had to be done. I mean I can't run him to the vet or groomer every time his nails grow so we have to get it done at home. He has no choice in the matter so little by little and with many treats, very, very calmly and slowly and with much praise after a calm session, I eased him into it. If he resists, I keep on going but keep that nail session short and then repeat it later in the day to get the rest of what needed to be done that day. I find a small towel over his face seems to quieten him and sort of lessens my stress if he resists. But since he knows we are going to get it done and he knows it won't hurt as I can see when I'm getting near the cuticle and don't, he doesn't ever put up much resistance. And I tell him "Remember, this is for your good!" and it helps me mentally, sort of, so I can go onto the next toe when he is trying to pull his foot away. He doesn't love it but we have worked out a routine that works for us and it keeps his nails nice and short and healthy.

| Having the Styptic powder or pencil near by is a must for those who clip nails. I won't do it alone. I always have someone hold while I clip. Dog's that are very hard to handle need to go to a groomer. Once they have been hurt the dog does not forget it. I had one that would be an angel for the groomer but would fight like a wolf if we tried to do it. Glad your little guy is feeling better. |
