| Tiny Yorkies - Breeding & Discipline I'm amazed at how many threads I've read lately where people have stated that they breed a tiny female Yorkie under 5 lbs. I have a new baby girl who is going to be tiny like my last princess was -- around 2-3 lbs full grown. I don't understand how someone could breed such a tiny helpless little girl and logically, morally and honestly think it's safe and OK to do. I know we have some threads about breeding tinies going right now but I just had to mention it again because I feel it's an important subject and worth repeating. I've also read some threads where people say that they hit their Yorkie hard because they may have some potty training or other behavorial issues -- even some people whose Yorkie is only 2 or 3 months old! I'm totally baffled at this. I can't even IMAGINE hitting my new little girl who is currently 3 months and 2 weeks old. OBVIOUSLY they are not going to be potty trained until they're much older. Would you expect a 3 month old human baby to be fully potty trained? Of course not! So why have unrealistic expectations for a tiny fragile Yorkie? It just really breaks my heart when I read about these little ones getting spanked hard. Their bones are so fragile. I bet it must break their little hearts because their main goal is life is to please US, their masters. And then we go and repay them by spanking them -- just terrible. Sorry to ramble but this is a subject that I'm very passionate about. Now let's all go home and KISS our babies for hours!

The breeding thing is a whole other issue, and sadly I'm sure it will continue to happen. I just don't understand risking the life of your tiny baby. Many other larger dogs go for equal to what people are paying for tiny yorkies. If it's all for the money, then they should just move to another breed. There are complications will all breeding, I'm sure, but I would assume there are fewer risks breeding a 100 lb dog as apposed to a 3 lb dog. | |

| Well I definitely agree with you it is wrong to breed tinies. Theres too many things that can go all wrong. As far as disciplining I have found that my yorkies respond better to positive reinforcement rather than negative. You can also really hurt them by spanking them.

| Im happy to say that my girls dont know and never will find out what spanking is about, they DONT deserve it, i might be stupid, overprotective or ridiculous, but i dont care, my girls will never be smacked or pulled or spanked, we treat them like procelaine doll's because thats exactly what they are kissing them is SO much more rewarding

| I honestly can't imagine anyone breeding them, but I know it is happening. It is obscene, actually. I can't understand someone striking a doggie. I've had three little chihuahuas and two yorkies in my life from the time I was a little girl and they were never struck. There is never any good reason to lay a hand on a doggie. Never. It doesn't matter how little or big they are. It is simply a matter of fact that a littler doggie can be easily injured. Neither is there a good reason to "yell" at them. I really believe that some people are not tolerant and should not have doggies, especially, smaller one's. I believe they simply have short fuses and can't possibly be a good doggie parent.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I agree with everything that you said...you put it just right!! Some people don't deserve the love of yorkies...they are just precious and for no reason should be spanked hard or any other method of pain!! There are times where dispincline is needed but there are simply more responsive ways....my girls are my life and I would never hurt them!!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Excellent thread, Jenn! Yes, I've read things on here lately that just flat out piss me off. It IS NOT right to breed a tiny. It IS NOT right to hit a dog. I better stop now before I really get on my soap box!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'm not a breeder But.... I AM a big pain in the butt about NOT breeding tinies.... and will always hope information read here will sink in to someone who is thinking about breeding their small female. I realize that sometimes I get overzealous... but I strongly believe it's cruel and not as nature intended to breed for smaller and smaller. Putting the mommies thru all the pain they go thru is just plain selfish. I also blame people who WANT the tinies which is causing too many 'breeders' to do this. No offense to anyone wanting a tiny or who has one.... but I just feel this way. I do love all our yorkies but WE ARE NOT THE NORM... there are far too many people out there who are clueless wanting small puppies and getting them .....only to find they don't know anything about the care involved. They just see CUTE. I KNOW I am not an expert but I don't like it when someone comes and posts that it's ok to breed for tiny....but as long as we continue to talk about it we DO stand a chance of reaching those out there who are thinking about it - and I realize this thread is about Tinies - but NO DOG should ever be hit when diciplining - tiny or big - it just makes me sick when people take out their own frustrations on something that can't defend itself - Our dogs are our friends and the most innocent of souls....animal abuse is so widespread that I really wish the laws were stricter. and yes - I think I've been a little heated in the past over a few issues - and DO apologize to anyone if I offend anyone.... but I will always feel yorkies are a precious breed that too many greedy people are taking advantage of. To breed for tiny is trying to profit off the size and beauty of something that is already perfect. |

| I don't think we would ever have a need (not to mention a desire ) to hit one of our dogs. With Trixie, all you have to slightly drop your voice to a lower town and that's all it takes--she's running tail tucked to hide for a while. With Flash, all you have to do is snap and point at her and she bows her head...won't even look at you! My husband grabbed Flash's muzzle once and held her mouth shut and got on to her ONE TIME--when she was very young, testing her boundaries and acted like she was going to bite. But that was all it took--she never tried it again. Dogs view themselves as part of a your pack--they try to find their place in it. Once they realize you are the leader, they won't try to run all over you and you won't have to be violent. Ha ha ha...anybody ever seen that movie "Snow Dogs" where they told the guy to bite the dogs ear? Funny movie! |

I'm sorry I forgot to say that NOT hitting dogs applies to a dog of ANY size but please let me clarify now -- I think it is wrong to hit or scream at a dog or cat or fish or guinea pig or hamster etc. of ANY size, shape, breed, smell, color, etc. It's just plain wrong and unacceptable to hit, period.
