I don't think we would ever have a need (not to mention a desire ) to hit one of our dogs. With Trixie, all you have to slightly drop your voice to a lower town and that's all it takes--she's running tail tucked to hide for a while. With Flash, all you have to do is snap and point at her and she bows her head...won't even look at you! My husband grabbed Flash's muzzle once and held her mouth shut and got on to her ONE TIME--when she was very young, testing her boundaries and acted like she was going to bite. But that was all it took--she never tried it again. Dogs view themselves as part of a your pack--they try to find their place in it. Once they realize you are the leader, they won't try to run all over you and you won't have to be violent.
