I'm quite sure Jen didn't start this thread with the intention of "attacking" the woman who hit her dog. I completely understand her point. Having never had a small dog, just looking at Olivia's size amazes me still- she is so small. (and she is not a tiny) Sometimes seeing a thread doesn't impact a person until they have something in front of them to really drive the point home- for Jen it was getting Tia home and seeing how small and fragile she is.

That being said, I wouldn't fault anyone on this board for starting a "don't hit your dog" thread every day of the week. Cruelty to animals is and should be intolerable. I realize people become frustrated when they can not communicate with an animal, but that doesn't give ANYONE the right to take their aggression out on a defenseless animal. Sure, dogs can bite back, but a dog's strength is often not even close to that of his or her human's strength. Olivia doesn't always understand what I want from her, but I know that she is trying to please me in every way possible and loves me unconditionally. Just looking in her eyes it makes me sad to think I would hit her because nature won't allow her to completely understand me. It is okay to become frustrated with an animal, and I'll admit I definitely have been, but people need to take care of their frustrations in an appropriate manner. I understand some people might think that some members' reactions to the post on hitting the dog was harsh. However, I don't understand why some people think that we should sugar-coat our reactions in a situation like this. We need to take responsibility for our actions and accept the consequenses. I applaud this member for coming forward, but when on a board dedicated to dogs, I don't think people should be surprised by the condemnation of hitting a dog so hard that it screams.

I don't understand why people question why this thread was started. It was started by a valued member because it was on her mind. Why are there new threads every week on how to crate train, yorkies sleeping in bed, chewing, biting... etc., etc.? Because not everyone goes through the same thing at the same time, and we have new members who join all the time. I'm quite glad Jen started this thread because when I initially responded I hadn't even seen the thread about the woman who hit her dog.

yorkieusa- LOL! You sound as tough as we are here. I always ask Olivia if she wants me to beat her bottom when we're play-fighting. She always howls back at me like "yeah right, mom!"

The lady in the thread about hitting her dog came and asked all of you for help and advise and she got some really good advise as well as some rude comments which don't help anyone except maybe made the poster of the comments feel better.
I believe she was horrified that she did this, and for someone to just keep this going is just sad!

Yes she is a valued member of the forum but so is every member here.
And I still say there is no comparison to a 3 month od baby and a 3 month old pup.

My goal is that a newbie does not ger hurt in the process.

We are lucky to have a group on here who do care about the breed and those asking questions and will try and give you the truth in black and white and share their experiences good and bad.

I am alo learning to use my ignore button to block off some of those who tend to yank my chain. Just laugh to myself and keep a going.

I also have a tiny 2.8 pounds at over 8 months old female. She came from a breeders who breeds 5 pound and over females only. So I too, feel there are tinies out there that can come from a proper responsible breeding without putting our little ones at risk.

I don't think Jen is trying to "keep anything going." She made very good points in her post. She never ever singled out that one person, she just said that she thinks spanking your dog is wrong. Yes, 3 month old puppies and 3 month old babies are different, but that isn't what she meant. She was trying to show how if you wouldn't hit a little baby, why would you hit a baby dog? or a dog of any size or age for that matter. I may be wrong, but that's how I feel, and thats what I think Jen meant to.

All of my gals are over 5lbs when I bred Bella and Cappie - the breeding was beautiful and produced one little tiny male. The Average weight in this litter of 4 is 2.5lbs at 13 weeks yet the tiny male is 1.4lbs. He was born at a very normal weight between 3.5-4.1oz at birth

He is perfectly normal I ran again this week the pre-anaesthetic blood panel twice once before eating and once after which all levels came out perfect. Just because he is a tiny doesnt make him unhealthy, he came from parents 5.5 mom and 5.1 dad respectively.

Breeding tinies is one thing getting tinies out of a perfectly good size breeding female and male is another.

From all of the horrible abuse stories I've read on the yorkie rescue sites, some of which were on petfinder, I believe this is a topic that needs to be hammered home on a daily basis in this country. It isn't aimed at any one person. The aim is at those who act before they think. An innocent and defenseless puppy should never be on the receiving end of violence, nor should the tiny puppies ever be bred. If it takes repetition to teach adults the same way it does puppies, then so be it!

Wow, I've been taking care of my poor Tia Rose (I think she has coccidia

) and I come back to see what a sad turn this thread has taken. I'm not even going to comment or try to defend myself. Hitting a dog is wrong. Breeding a tiny (under 5 lbs) is wrong. PERIOD. I don't have to explain myself.

Thank you to everyone who defended these poor innocent HELPLESS babies who suffer at the hands of their "owners".

Oh Jen...I am so sorry to hear that Tia is sick. Coccidia is so common in a young puppy due to the stress of the transition. Is she on albon? I hope she feels better soon.

Thank you. Yes, she's on Albon but I'm worried sick because she has some blood in her stool and she threw up a few times. I've been giving her nutrical and pedialyte with sugar in it to keep her blood sugar up so that she doesn't have any trouble with hypoglycemia. If she gets any worse tonight, I'm going to take her to the ER vet. If she's ok through the night, then I am going to take her to her scheduled vet appointment for early tomorrow morning.

I'm sorry for getting off topic.

I thought this thread WAS going good too till it turned

most all of us agree with you 100% on both subjects...

you don't need to be defending your reasons for posting - we can't say some of these things enough - I hope people DO read this and learn something ....
and I really REALLY hope your baby is going to be ok ....Glad to see this morning she is feeling better - Keep us posted OK ?

I hope this thread doesn't mean me! "Spanking" around here is a tiny tap on the bootie or nose with one finger! A couple of times I've swatted Lexy with the flwswatter when she ran accross the street! That swat was the tiniest little swat you can imagine. Just enough to hurt her feelings.

Elizabeth, part of this thread was because of someone that had gotten pretty frustrated with her 4 month old and spanked the dog several times really hard. She felt guilty about it and came on here asking for direction and help.

we know that girl ! You need to look in the TRAINING Section for the closed thread - that's who Jen meant...there is a huge diff when they do something that scare us witless & we reprimand them .....to taking out frustrations on a puppy over potty training issues
