| New member needs travel advice I just wanted to intro myself and my fur kids and ask for a bit of advice. I have been lurking on the boards for over a year now but just recently became a member to post! I never joined to post before since it seems like there was always an answer to any question I ever had already posted! I'll give y'all a bit of back story so maybe you can help answer my question below. Husband and I are stationed overseas in Germany for a few more weeks and we are getting ready to move back stateside with our two teapots (Theodore aka "Teddy" and Chloe aka "princess"). At first they told us they would have to go under the plane and made us buy medium sized kennels for each of our yorkies. They are about 8-9lbs and quite tall as they fit closer to the German breed standard here. We found out last week from our airline we couldn't ship them under the plane for the very last leg of our journey through O'hare so we had to switch to taking them in cabin with us. Thankfully after reading all the advice on here and on Dog Jaunt I found a carrier and we can transport them no problem and have found most of the answers to my questions. My problem is that with layovers my trip from Germany to TX will take us about 29-30 hours total. Since we are military I didn't have the option to stop in route like I would have preferred. This is how my trip is booked so maybe you can offer advice about feeding etc so that I can get them through this safely. They have never flown before but have done many road trips with us. We have to check in 6 hours before our flight as per the military so we will be at the military airport until then. Then we have a 9 hour flight to BWI and will thankfully land next to their pet relief area. We have about a 3.5 hour layover at BWI before we change terminals and airlines to head to O'hare. At O'hare we have about a 2.5 hour layover and again we fly into one of their pet friendly terminals with a relief area. My question is where in my journey should I feed them? Should I wait the 30 hours of travel before feeding them? My gut tells me they will need to eat but I wanted to check. Can I take a small bag of dried kibble on the plane with us since they eat a special food? I know from car trips they get sick off of wet food when they are anxious. We will be putting their calming collars on and will take the calming treats with us if we can. For us collar + a treat = snoring yorkies on our road trips! Thanks in advance for your replies! I am just hoping to make this move as easy on all of us as I can. (I'll post pics once I can get my image program to work so I can resize my pics) |

| I definately wouldn't let them go 30 hours without food. An empty stomach and the motion of travel added to the confines of a carrier is just asking for a sick dog. I'd try to stick to their regular routine & regular food as closely as possible to avoid any stomach upset. I'd feed & give water before the first flight (in plenty of time to have them go potty) and feed & water again during the long layovers and give them a good walk too, so they can stretch their legs and hopefully get a lil tired out ready for the next leg of the journey. Best of luck on your trip home.

| Wow, that's a lot of traveling! I wish you luck. I am sure everything will go fine. I will say I know my dog and I highly doubt he would eat - when he's stressed, he won't eat. Even in the car when we're traveling and he's not highly stressed at all, he won't eat most things. Not eating for 24-30 hours won't kill them, especially since they are a bit bigger. But yeah, I would at least offer some food and if they do eat some, that's great. Get a little something in their tummy, maybe when you get to BWI? I am sure you won't have a problem having a little bag of dog kibble on the plane with you. Good luck!

| Welcome to YT! I'm glad they will be in the cabin with you since that should cut out some of the stress and perhaps they will eat with you being right there with them. Hopefully they will sleep during most of the trip. Thank you for your service to our country and welcome home (soon)

| Are you traveling alone or with someone else. If you are traveling with someone else won't the airlines let each of you take a dog in a carry on carrier. You would have to pay, of course. When we traveled like that both my Mother and I would have our dogs in a carrier and in the cabin. Problem is, they only allow a couple dogs on the plane at the same time so you have to be sure you can book them both.

| Thank you for the replies! Husband and I are both traveling together this time and we will each have a dog in cabin with us. Lol I wish they had a set eating schedule. My boy likes to eat most of his food in the early afternoon and my girl likes to eat hers between midnight - 2am. Since they are opposites we just free feed and they are fine. They are for sure on my husbands night shift schedule. My only other concern is for my girl Chloe. We got her as a rescue pup from the lady who helped us find our boy Teddy and poor Chloe has had a few problems. She has slight arthritis from having Legg–Calvé–Perthes syndrome and can't stay in one position for long. I'm not sure how she will do on the 9 hour flight with her leg. Only time we ever notice the arthritis is when it is cold or wet here and I know it will be both of those at all the airports until we hit TX. We had an awesome German Orthopedic surgeon here and have a wonderful vet team that caught it early and helped her rehab amazingly well so I have my fingers crossed that she will be fine. However she also has a partially collapsed trachea and a sensitive stomach which gets irritated when she gets excited. I'm pretty sure I'm more nervous / anxious then they will be. |

| I'm always stressed before traveling with my yorkie, even though we travel alot and I've never had a problem...I just drive myself nuts with the "what ifs." Something about the hum of the plan puts her right to sleep and the only time she fusses in the bag is when she has to go pee. Then I just take the bag to the toilet and put down a pee pad and she goes on that. I've only had to do it a couple of times on flights, as most time she sleeps. Knowing that I travel alot, and take my pup many places with me during a regular week, I prefer scheduled feedings so potty times are predictable. How soon are you traveling? Do you have time to start getting them into somewhat of a routine before hand?

| Welcome home, since there are two of you to travel with two pups you should do just fine, if your guys are like Sprocket, Sprocket would not eat before travel, just sips of water, nerves, I think, and that's OK too. Helps with the stomach issues . Both BWI and Ohare have nice pet spots so you are in a pretty good spot there, where are you landing in TX? Though it really doesn't matter, most airlines, and I do say most, are very helpful with the dogs. Besides, Tx is warmer, already better, if your guys won't eat their kibble, which is pretty normal, a tiny bit of lunch snack, you will have nervous stomach too, so maybe a little bit of cottage cheese or string cheese? BUT if they don't eat it's OK, they won't starve, just be sure they drink, oh and of course pee. My vet said to this (me) very new puppy owner "well he won't starve himself, you'll give in to his food demands before he will hurt himself". Well OK, but I'm such a wimp. But mostly, once your in the air, your babies can snuggle on to your lap and snore, this will help with your nervousness too, LOL. Everyone will be SO tired. Mostly welcome home. Relax, I know it's hard, but they will help you. .......Hmmmmmm Texas in the winter, nice. Your final landing? Good luck.

| Is it a terrible idea to suggest having a sedative ready just in case the dogs have a really hard time? Dinky has stayed awake for over 12 hours in the car. I have wondered if we would need to do something to help him sleep on a flight if the situation ever came up. |

| I remember when hubby was coming home on leave from Korea and he was bringing our Molly that he adopted from the Vet Clinic there with him, she sat right in the seat next to him and the Flight Attendants fixed her up a chicken dinner. With our first Yorkie I traveled back and forth from Germany to Texas many times. Lufthansa Air Lines did allow me to have Spencer sit in my lap. How ever he would never eat anything when he traveled. Not sure now day's that this would be the case.

| Chloe may need some extra pain/anxiety meds from her vet before you leave. Glad they will both be in the cabin with you. Our trip from Kentucky to Tonga took so long that I felt like a crippled when we got there, but Cali was ready to run the beach
