| Pet Stores... OK, I know how you guys are against puppy mills (me to). But you guys say that Pets stores, no matter what they say.. always takes dogs from puppy mills. I dont think thats always the case.. The pet store I go to (petsmart) has puppies that they sell every Sunday, Well i wanted to find out if they really do take dogs from puppy mills. But the lady that was in charge of the adoption center said they know the breed history, what its colors should be when its an adult, age of puppy, what its size and weight should be as an adult of EVERY puppy!! She also said they never sell any puppies that are younger then 12 weeks (depending on the size, it might be older). She said that she has adopted some of the last puppies herself. Apparently she has a prebred yorkie that does competitions, and she trust the puppies they sell there enough to have already adopted THREE!! So can you guys please know for a FACT that they take dogs from puppy mills before you say that? |

| If you are talking about Petsmart, they do not sell puppies. They have rescues/shelters come in and hold adoption events. And yes, all pet stores that actually sell puppies get them from puppy mills and backyard breeders. No reputable breeder would EVER sell to a puppy mill. Quote:

| Just my opinion, I rarely think an answer is is 100 % when we generalize or give a blanket answer. My local Petsmart does NOT sell puppies. They have local rescues, ASPCA, and Humane Society adoptions in their store every Sun. More often than not the Boxer and Greyhound rescues are there. Also there is small privately owned pet store that works with local breeders (and yes I guess some would be called backyard breeders) and a parrot rescue. The puppies are not caged. Puppies are in a play pen and the litter owner is present . If a puppy is sold, the pet store owner gets a set fee or commission for each pup. The pet store owners requirements are basic. All puppies must have a current health certificate,up to date shot record, be flea and worm free and on preventive. Puppy owners must provide a one year, money back guarantee in writing that the puppies do not have a genetic defect or disease. ( I know some things do not show up in a year) The store owner breeds French Bulldogs herself. My point being, that you must do your research, ask questions. If a puppy's club papers are not local, most likely it is from a puppy mill. Can you see the parents ? Who is their Vet ? What organization has the puppy ? How and why did they get the dog ? Remember all puppies are cute, so don't buy cute . My best advice is find a good breeder, that has a good reputation first and if necessary wait for a puppy. Or work with a well known rescue. I hope you find the perfect puppy for you, Best Wishes, Teresa

| To the best of my knowledge, PetSmart's corporate policy forbids the sale of puppies in their stores. As others have stated, they do host adoption days for dogs from rescues/shelters. Good breeders, those who test their breeding stock and research their lines, AKC registered, would never sell their puppies through any pet store. There is no need. Most good breeders have waiting lists. It is possible to purchase a healthy, good looking dog with a good temperament through a store. There are cases here. However, the number of heartbreaking stories of sick pups far, far, far outweigh the happy outcomes.

| As far as I know Petsmart does not sell puppies they have adoption days. A good breeder does not sell there puppies to pet stores to sell good breeders want to know who there puppies are going to and don't want them sitting in a cage all day not taken care of. All pet stores sell puppy mill puppies or backyard breeder puppies no matter what they say.

Also, not every backyard breeder is an evil person who keeps their dogs in cages 24 hours a day. Some are very affectionate to their dogs. They're just not breeding to better the breed, health testing their breeding stock, etc. Their purpose is solely to make money.

Is there any way you can post a link to this info for us? According to my Petsmart (and their website), they hold adoptions of cats and dogs on certain days to help rehome homeless pets. Are they doing something different in your area of the country? I hope if they are working w breeders in your area, they are breeders known to them. Petsmart has done a lot of good in the area of homeless pets and we shop there bc of it.
