To the best of my knowledge, PetSmart's corporate policy forbids the sale of puppies in their stores. As others have stated, they do host adoption days for dogs from rescues/shelters.
Good breeders, those who test their breeding stock and research their lines, AKC registered, would never sell their puppies through any pet store. There is no need. Most good breeders have waiting lists.
It is possible to purchase a healthy, good looking dog with a good temperament through a store. There are cases here. However, the number of heartbreaking stories of sick pups far, far, far outweigh the happy outcomes.
