| How to loose that 'Doggy Smell' Hi there I'm new so sorry if I have posted this message in the wrong place! I have had my YT Alfie now for almost 2 weeks and he is an absolute angel but he doesn't half nif. He definately has a doggy odour. I've dried bathing him, I wipe him with aloe vera rub clothes when we've been out but he doesnt seem to loose that doggy odour. Can anyone suggest anything I might try please? I am in the UK and I dont know what products are available. Thanks |

| Yorkie should not have a bad odor..that is one reason I have them..can not stand a dog smell...I would have a vet check for skin, anal glands, ears, teeth...if all is normal...feed a quality food and use a good shampoo and conditioner once a week..best wishes |

| I know this seems to be my answer for alot of things, but it's so true that the food you feed your dog will account for so many issues. I agree with the other posts as well that the odor can be from some obvious places, teeth and gums, anal glands, ears ( which can get yeast growing in them that will smell so foul it will choke you!) Always check the obvious first, then if after the vet says these check out ok, then I say look into the food. |

| It sounds like dermatitis due to a food allergy. Steam some green beans, grate fresh carrots & cook some ground beef and mix all together. Feed this for a couple of weeks to see if it doesn't work. Also bathe him in an oatmeal or medicated shampoo. (I'd bathe at least twice a week or more). You can get a nice medicated one at most any Vet. offices. If his persistent odor doesn't go away after a couple weeks, Then maybe it's time for a skin scraping & blood panel by the Vet.

| How often do you bath him? I have two YT and they do good with a bath one a week and daily brush, but sometimes I get to much work and have to bath them once every two weeks and by that time they begin to smell like doggies. Another question comes to my mind; does he get to play outside? If so, that should be one of the reasons. Although we all treat them as babies, boy they really know how to get dirty. I use the Isle of Dogs products, which happen to be fantastic for my furbabies. |

| If there is not an underlying health issue, could be as simple as using good hair products. The first couple of times I bathed Max when he was a pup, I used a shampoo off the shelf from Walmart. He smelled like a yucky wet dog. Then I bought some better shampoo and conditioner and found that Max has no smell at all. More than 2 years later, he still has zero smell. Teddy has a distinctive puppy smell, like a human baby. I love it!

They do smell sometimes like their food! I know if I've given Harry chicken liver mixed in with his normal stuff, I can smell it on him the next day. Not on his breath, but kind of on his body? Plenty of fresh veg mixed in with his food is the way to go (after, of course, checking him out with your vet!). Ok, we're in the UK, so we don't have access to all the wonderful things in the US that I'd love to try (so many sound so scrummy!) but have you tried 'Groomers' products? The lavender shampoo - I'm thinking of using myself!! It's brilliant. He'll need doing once a week. And while we're on the subject - he doesn't adore rolling around in fox poo, does he?!?! So yucky! Good luck! Sally + Harry x | |

| Thanks for all the replies everyone, they're great! We did wonder if he has some kind of an allergy as we've noticed he has a tendancy to scratch too, not a lot but its noticeable so I think a trip to the vet is in order. Being a rescue dog we don't really know a lot about his history. When I say he's niffy I dont mean its offensive, just you're typical 'doggy' smell. We've had him 2 weeks tomorrow now and already he's been in the bath 3 times. We've been using off the shelf stuff, so I'll definately see if I can find the Groomers make you mentioned and try that, got to admit, Lavender sounds scrumptciuous! Re his diet, he's been eating the food that his other mummy gave us but I have been thinking he needs something a little more palletable. Got to admit I never thought about dogs smelling of the food that they eat, but LOL ... guess its the same as us and garlic breath! Thanks again for all of your help everyone! |

| Good afternoon! Think we got the 'de-tangling' Groomers spray from Petsmart, but the shampoo from Waitrose. It really made a big difference for Harry. And please - don't tell anyone else!!!! - very occasionally we use Pantene 2 in 1!! Sally + Harry x |

| Not really, no! Apparently long-term it doesn't do their hair much good - but I'm sure, on the odd occasion, it doesn't do any harm. Wish Pantene made a doggy shampoo, I love the smell and it stays smelling like it for a long time (what a terrible mummy I am!!) Sally + Harry x |

| I've used human shampoo and conditioner on my girls with no trouble at all, but there's supposedly some difference in the Ph levels of our skin vs. theirs, so I don't know if it's good to do it all the time. If you do, just make sure to rinse rinse and rinse very thoroughly. I think that's where any irritation would come from, if residue was left behind. Some dogs' skin is more sensitive than others, just like us On their faces, I just would use a wet cloth with a tiny bit of baby shampoo on it, then another clean wet cloth, keep rinsing and wiping a few times. Boy I love that baby shampoo smell on my girls Now they got to the groomer every two weeks, so unless they get very stinky in between, I rarely bathe them myself anymore. I kind of miss it

| I always 'bath' Harry in the shower, so he's always rinsed loads. And after eating, I always give his face a wash, saves any build-up. Oh, and I'm sorry - I meant Pets at Home, it's the Aromatherapy one with lavendar + mint (I just had to go and have another sniff - I could eat it!!). Sally + Harry x |
