I'd be terrified if my dog didn't have her rabies vaccine to say the least. I'd be worried if she for some reason bit someone they'd have to quarantine her, at least, to rule out the disease.
Not to mention worrying about parasites, under/over weight, regular heartbeat, etc. I was a month late taking Princess in for her boosters & heart worm test and prevention and I was a worried wreck! I kept playing all of these worst case scenarios through my head and that was within a month, not years. I cannot imagine never doing it. No matter the cost, time or inconvenience, I could not justify avoiding vet care. It's my responsibility as her owner, just as it is anyone's who owns a pet. What is the harm in taking him/her in?

Bad, I think a dog should see their regular vet a minimum of once a year for a good checkup, I personally prefer mine to go every 6 months.

Don't mean to stray away from the topic, but I do have a question...when I got my babies' their last checkup and routine vaccinations. They had a 3 year DHPP and rabies...I've never heard of 3 year DHPP...does that mean they don't need another set until 3 years later? Of course, they are still going to get a heartworm and fecal test, but I was just wondering...

It is very irresponsible for someone not to take their dog to the vet at least once a year.

In Ohio in Franklin county it only costs $12 for the license if your dog is neutered/spayed and a rabies vaccine is required for the license, and it's every 3 years here in Ohio that the rabies vaccine is required.

it drives me crazy when people who are so nonchalant with their pets tend to have the longest living pets. But she was in a lot of pain in her last few years and thankfully my aunt took her in and took care of her and did take her to the vet.

But yes I feel vet visits are very necessary especially at 1 year old if they have not been since a pup. I think once they get a bit older too they are very important.

3 years is the most recent protocol.

I personally am not for vaccines every year. I think it's entirely too much. They are all the same vaccine. I am unsure if Jackson will ever get DHPP again actually. He got them as a pup and at one year old. I may get them a booster one more time at 4yrs old but that will be it besides rabies since legally that's every 3yrs.

I'm not sure why they have to be renewed every 6 months, I would think it would go a long with vaccinations, but it doesn't (not here anyway). The license is through the county, so the price may vary from county to county. The problem is around here most people don't register their dogs, so the low price may be to encourage that. I have never had a dog that wasn't registered & the price hasn't went up in years.

The problem around here is that the price is too high, so people just don't license or take their dogs to the vet at all! Two examples of that at bf's house! Well now just one since one has since passed. But never went to the vet, never got shots other than puppy shots, no rabies, so no license, but of course, also never went to the park, out on walks, etc. Sad.

Wow- could you get more information about the 3 year DHPP from your vet? Is it the same vaccine, just a new protocol (like the 3 year rabies)? I'd love to learn more about this option. Rhett just went through his 1 year-old booster, but I don't want to vaccinate every year if there is a better option I can convince my vet to look at. I plan on doing titers next year, but would love this info for the future.

Ahh it does sound a lil pricey, but don't people realize that they end up paying a bigger price in the end? It is very sad

I no longer speak to that vet because his business is shady, which is why I'm sketchy about the 3 year DHPP...When I got it, it was when I first moved here so I didn't know that vet was a bad one...

Wow, a 3 year license, that would be nice!! We have a 3 year rabies here but license is required to be renewed every year. It cost $14 a year which actually isn't too bad but it costs me over a $100 each year as I make sure to register all my dogs and my mom's. Apparently though many around here don't register their dogs. I actually haven't came across many dogs owners in the city that have their dogs registered. I always like to be on the safe side so I always register mine.

Oh dang so many replies back.

Well I meant her dog is up to date with all the shots and vaccines. She takes him to the vaccine places for animals, but her dog has never actually been to the vet for like a regular checkup or exam at all. He is utd with all his shots, but just never had a fecel test or heartworm checkup.

I'll let her know and hopefully she will change her mind and start taking her yorkie to a vet. I know it it's bad, but she's not a horrible person. She loves her yorkie alot. Thanks for the replies!
