So I was wondering if this is bad....... My friend has a 1 1/2 year old yorkie. She has never taken him to the vet. Is that bad or not? Her yorkie seems to be fine though. He's gotten all his shots and looks very healthy. He loves to play and eats alot too! He looks perfectly fine to me but I was just wondering if this is good or bad?????? |
If she has had him since he was a pup and has not taken him to the vet, he has not had his 1-year booster shots. The law in most states requires rabies every 3 years, so she will eventually have to go. Overall, I believe it is bad. A dog should be examined once a year by a doctor and should have a fecal and heartworm test done, at the very least. |

Yes, bad... Rabbies is what it is-other vacs? How does she get the RX for heartworm meds? How does she know her dog is healthy? Fecals in the least are a yearly needed test... |
I agree that it's not good. There are other things other than vaccinces that the vet has to do to a pup. Also I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere but I believe Rabbies cannot be given by anyone but a vet and it's the law to have pets vaccinated for Rabbies. |
If the dog did not have his rabies 1 year booster, the owner could not have registered for the dog's license and would not be in compliance with the law. |

The license would be to go along with his rabies shot. Anytime she has him out, he is suppose to have proof that he has had his rabies shot and should have a tag from the vet that is from the county. Another thing posters have not mentioned is that he should have his teeth checked. Often with yorkies and all toy breeds they retain some of their baby teeth and need to have them pulled around 6 months of age. If the baby teeth are there (especially canine teeth) they can cause the bite to go off, but more importantly can cause extra tarter to build up and cause tooth decay. Tarter at this age can build up on the other teeth as well and over time, teeth decay can cause heart problems as well as other health problems. Teeth cleanings should be done yearly on toy breeds. Brushing their teeth daily will help to reduce the quick build up of tarter. Some vet can do scrapings, instead of a full dental cleaning. It really depends on how much tarter they have built up. I hope this information has helped. So yes, it is a bad thing she has not taken him to the vet yet. |
Some cities require that a dog be registered with the city,FtWorth,TX is one of them. It is mandatory and done by the vet at the time of yearly shots. It is also important to build a relationship with a vet INCASE there is a problem later as the dog becomes older. A good question: would you give birth to a child and not take it for well checkups? How do you know the dog is healthy if a professional has not had a look to rule out heart problems,knee problems (common in YT). How can you know that a dog is healthy if there hasn't been a yearly fecal test to rule out intestinal parasites or a blood test to rule out heartworms. |

My uncle has a dog that they never take to the vet...she's 9 years old and they brought her here from Taiwan. She's a medium size breed so less maintenance. I don't even know if they get her her rabies shot...I remember he was laughing because I was telling him how I brush my babies' teeth and stuff...lol |
Brushing the teeth do help, but they should still get their teeth checked yearly!!! It is amazing how much of their health can be related to the health if their teeth. You would have to get the 3 year rabies shot to get the 3 year license. I have heard that the vaccine make-up for the 3 year and 1 year is the same. But if you do not tell the vet you want the 3 year, you will get the 1 year. So you have to tell them. In some states if you are pulled over with your dog in the car, they can ask you for the paperwork or tag on your dog to prove they have had the rabies shot. They are getting pretty tough on this in some states. |
