You say "I know he knows better" but obviously he DOESN'T know better. It's our job as humans/owners/parents to TEACH them. Just as we teach a child to look both ways before crossing the street. Children don't come pre-designed knowing all these little safety rules, parents teach them. Dogs need to be taught as well, keeping in mind that they don't necessarily speak our language either (until we teach them words, etc). You need to practice first and work on training him. When a door is open, he needs to learn that's not time to dart. There's a few different techniques for teaching this, here is one idea:

In addition to training, an ex-pen or some sort of a gate is going to be a necessity. When the disabled person needs to leave the house for some reason, dog needs to be locked up or unable to get to the door.

I think you better get an xpen for this dog before you don't have him anymore. We have 5 dogs and I was always on edge when we had to open the front door. Now we have a gate there. If you can't use a gate I would find some way to confine him before you lose him I've heard hundreds of these horror stories.

-I posted earlier this week about a lost little male yorkie I saw in Petco who may never find his real home again . Yorkies will always respond better to praise and kindness over punishment. Work hard on the training and always make sure you know exactly where he is before that door opens. Good luck.

I saw that story you posted. How sad!! He misses his family and his family must be devastated to have lost him.

OMgosh, I would be frantic if Zhoie got out...even once. There would be heads to roll let me tell you. No one enters without me picking Zhoie up, my thoughts are, whomever is there....can wait!

I taught her from a pup, when someone comes to the front door she is picked up before it opens (it always stays locked), so now she will run ahead of me and twirl to be picked up.
Please find something or one way or another you will loose your dog. How about confirm him in another section of the home.

I have a foster named Rookie. I will never forget the reason he was surrendered to YHR. He had a fractured leg for six months because his owners could not afford the vetting. So..he lived in pain for all that time.
The reason it was fractured?? Because he kept getting out and running down the street and the owner told me that one day "the inevitable happened". Made me want to scream, but I took him and left without a word. It was only "inevitable" because she CHOSE to be irresponsible. HE did not make the choice.

The cheap wooden gates fit in my door and I am able to close the screen and door while in place.

I used to have a door dasher (not a Yorkie, she was a mix rescue, about 20 pounds). I tried everything to break her of it. I finally just had to pick her up every time someone came in or out of the door. Eventually she sort of out grew the door dashing.

If my Moshe got out I would be in panic mode. He is far to little to be out by himself. He could be hit by a car, become a large birds lunch, get too far and get lost, or ate by a larger dog or dog napped! Too many bad things could happen.

If I were you I would do what ever I had to do to keep your Yorkie inside. Hold her or restrict her to rooms without a door....something..

Oh my gosh! That is awful! That poor. poor baby.

See, there ya have it. Please, you absolutely must put a gate up. If there is someone disabled couldn't they let you know before entering/exiting the house? Maybe then you could move the gate and put it back? Idk as I'm not familiar with an xpenn. What I do know is that if you don't figure out something the outcome is going to be something tragic! I ALWAYS pick Bella up before opening my front door as she always goes dashing towards it when it is about to be opened. I don't want to give her the chance.

Hi
If you can't have any type of gate can you "train" your disabled person to call to you BEFORE he/she opens the door so you can hold your baby until he is out and he can ring your door bell BEFORE he comes in so you can do the same thing. I realize this may take awhile for all persons to get used to doing this but until you can get your dog trained to Stay, I would work on training your person. Best of luck.

To the op- is your dog quite young? Tia used to be like that in the early days , as soon as the front door opened it was like freedom! They are just curious little devils , theres a big wide world out there they want to investigate and they don't realise its not safe. Now however I can be in the front garden and Tia will stand at the door and watch and won't come out unless called. Hopefully your baby will grow out of it but in the meantime put him in an xpen when someone knocks the door a bit of training will go a long way. My two hear the word "bed" when someone knocks the door and they both go to it and it didn't take long for them to learn.

1. No never punish a dog for returning it will work against you to do so!
2. Get a 24' leash or rope and work on recall (of course with a harness since we're talking about a Yorkie-CT)
3. Later practice recall in an enclosed area with no leash...use treats and positive reinforcement like praise.
4. Neutering helps so yes he may be smelling an attractive female...also why does he stay gone an hour...do you not run out the door after?

He doesn't run out on me. Just when my brother who's in a wheel chair opens the door. My brother CAN"T RUN OUT. He's also metally disabled so I can't TRAIN MY PERSON. How cruel. I posted on here for help. I have fixed my issue. I am so heartbroken at the rude responses I have received when reaching out for help. My baby is very safe now. I can see how badly people can treat you when you are needing help. I am going to deactivate my account. I never thought I would have to do that. I have always enjoyed helpful advice from this forum and the kindness. There is always a way to help people without being rude. My brother was sent to live with me for a brief period. He was nearly killed in a car accident that left him paralyzed and brain damaged. I'm thankful he's alive. He doesn't realize what he's doing. Brady would never run out on me. If he did of course I would be out the door to rescue him in a flash. He wouldn't make it off the porch. I don't want an accident happening to Brady as well. I fixed the foor issue with a gate and My brother's nurse will just have to deal with it. I don't care if she complains. If it doesn't hurt my brother then she can work around it. I have never punished Brady. I wouldn't even know how. He's too precious. I thought maybe I was supposed to say a certain phrase ot something. wow. I am so upset. But thank you to all the people that took the time to respond in a nice way. It means a lot to me when someone takes time out of their day to be helpful to a stranger for the sake of their beloved Yorkie.
