| Comment & a question Hello again, This info is for all the new yorkie mom's out there who begin to think their little one is doing 'great' and decides to skip the Nutra-cal for a few days..... DON'T DO IT!!!!!! Lil Bit has been doing great...eating well and gaining weight every day. I had skipped the Nutra-cal for a few days thinking maybe her slightly loose poops would firm up a bit.......I did notice over the weekend she did not eat "as well" but remained energetic and playful.....twice we looked around for her and found she had gone to "her room" and crawled into her bed to sleep. We thought we were raising the perfect little pup. This am, just before leaving for work (she barely ate a few bites for breakfast), I noticed she was walking funny and would stagger a bit...I immediatley gave her some sugar water and Nutra-cal...had to force her to eat/drink. She soon perked up a bit....I gave her some baby food chicken and she would not eat...I continued the sugar water every 30 minutes for 2 hours....went and did about 30 minutes work....got home and cooked some chicken & rice...she ate like she was starving... The day has been up and down....right now she is 'running laps' with the chihuahua...... Now for the question: I want anyone to tell me about their yorkie pup...their weight, age and specifically...how coordinated are they??? Even though Lil Bit is very playful and energetic she still seems a bit uncoordinated to me. She will be 4 months old 3-2-05...she currently weighs 1 pound 13 ounces. She has alot of energy but I still think she is not as coordinated as she should be at this age. When I got my Chihuahua, by the time she was 4 months old.....(she was about the same size ...maybe a bit larger)...she was bouncing all over the place..up and down from the couch and chairs....she could fly up a set of stairs..(she still can't go down, but that is because I haven't let her try)...she could run and catch something just as it hit the ground....(I mean fairly close by)...she could out-run and dodge me easily. Lil Bit can't clear the floor to hop over a paper towel roll. My chihuahua can easily bump her and she just rolls.....she has a ramp onto and of the couch but she can easily loose her balance and fall off...(onto carpet and pillows)... Maybe I'm not being fair trying to compare a yorkie to a Chi, but I have this feeling all is not well......... She is still the most adorable thing......the sweetest face and eyes...and can manage to get into trouble often. Just wondering about other yorkies.... Any responses????? (sorry this is soooooo long) |

| Tia is surprisingly more coordinated than I thought she'd be. She's now 15 weeks old, but she also weighs more than yours 2lbs 10 oz at the last visit. She plays chase with Sandy ALL DAY, but then by around 4pm she's pretty laid back and just relaxes and sleeps until bedtime, then sleeps through the night in her crate. So, hopefully this comparison helps you a little bit, but again, my baby isn't as small as yours, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

| Howdy!!!! I can't believe I have found someone sooooooooo close to home....please write and tell me all about your puppy!!!! I leave food down all day for her....but lately, because I am trying to get her to eat something, it has been "good stuff" and my chihuahua will gobble everything up!!!!! I have been leaving her out for brief periods during the day (while I work) but for the next few days I am going to put her in her pen with the food and water just to keep Apple out of it! I am in and out of the house often so she is not in there long. I am beginning to fear something like liver shunt.....because of her small size and the coordination thing.......vet did blood when I first got her but said everything was ok...... What vet do you go to in Spartanburg????? I have taken the greyhound to Sonny King (the Iditarod musher/vet) and really liked him....he is good with greyhounds....but my vet now (a young guy) trained in Alabama near a greyhound track so he is good also! Lil Bit did have some runny poops this am....on the paper fortunately!!! She would not eat the chicken/rice this am but kept trying to get at Apples' food.....dry Pro Plan and a few grains of "Moist & Meaty"....Apple told her "NO"! I poured a few drops of Iams Savory Sauce on it and she licked alot and ate a few bites...... I let you know how this all turns out....Thanks! |

| [QUOTE=debi_s]I am beginning to fear something like liver shunt.....because of her small size and the coordination thing.......vet did blood when I first got her but said everything was ok...... [QUOTE] Debi, my baby is about the same age (16 weeks) and she's only about 1 1/2 lbs. at best. (She was 1 lb. 4 oz. at 13 weeks) She has those moments of what we call walking like a Nova with a bad back end! She walks sideways, for lack of a better way to describe it! Or she gets going and trips over her own momentum and rolls! I think it's just small puppyness. Your baby doesn't really sound like anything is wrong (to me, but I'm not a vet!) because Gracie goes through most of those same things. Some days I have to force feed her because she just has no appetite, but the next day she's ravenous! Some days she's got loose stools, some days hard, some just right. I don't give Gracie the Nutrical now as often as I did before because she doesn't appear to need it. I do squirt a bit on her food once a day, and on the days she doesn't have much appetite I certainly give it to her, but in general she gets it on an "as needed" basis. If she hasn't eaten in the couple of hours before bedtime, I throw a treat in her kennel at night just so that if she gets hungry, she has something to eat so that her blood sugar won't drop. But other than two instances the first few days I had her with hypoglycemia, she's never had a problem. I'd say just keep an eye on your little one, supplement as needed and don't compare her to anybody BUT her!

| debi s, i had a similar incident w/ my 2 yr old bella. when she was only about 12 weeks old she went into a disoriented, "drunken", dizzy incident which a 24hr vet said was not hypoglycemia but possibly a shunt. that particular day she ate next to nothing. she was so small and fragile, i thought the few pellets she had ate during the day was enough. anyway i had a bile acid assay test done which results pointed to liver disease or a shunt. anyway to make a long story short, i put her on a LOW PROTEIN diet. the dry food is called L/D (liver disease). it's a prescription food which u can get at vet.it's high carb/low protein. read u gave chicken and rice. chicken or any protein is a no no for any dog suspected of liver problems. after my incident i did alot of research and talked to different knowledgable people. strict diet can correct a liver problem, as long as it's not a drastic problem. i don't know where u stand now w/ your baby but if u suspect any kind of liver problem or shunt, get a bile acid assay test done, look into the food i'm talking about and give nutra cal daily, no matter what. i feed my dog steamed brown rice w/ sweet potatos and green beans twice a day. duringthe day, she picks on the L/D dog food. nutra cal every morning too. also she gets no more treats because IMO most treats are garbage, gives nothing beneficial other that satisfying the dog's hunger/love of treats. my dog used to get a treat EVERY single time she barked to let her out, every time she pooped/peed. now she gets no treats for any of that other than kisses and hugs. |

| Nutri-cal! My Artie, is 1 year and 2 months old I still give him Nutri-cal when ever he will eat it? Daily....some days he eats it some days he won't? Yorkies will play and play until they drop. One minute he will run a golf course and the next minute he will be sleeping. Some days he eats his kibble, one day he won't eat anything. You never know the Nutri-cal is my Insurance and I could'nt live without it! I would get her checked/tested by the Vet. the smaller tea-cups are alot higher risk, they are more fragile & delicate! The first year is the hardest and most stressful, I was a nervous wreck. But now I don't worry anymore, just the normal stuff. Good Luck |

| She did it again...... Well, it is again monday morning and Lil Bit is doing that "not eating" acting kinda sleepy thing.....I gave her some sugar water and a few licks of Nutristat..... I thought I had hit on a good food for her over the weekend...I tried the eukanuba petit and she seemed to like it and could chew it...somewhat.....but I noticed when I fixed some food for bed (last night) she did not eat any....just went on to sleep...(but she did have a good snack about 1 hour prior). I am going to stay home for a few hours this am and watch her and give some more nutristat...I think I am going to try to get away from the canned food with her dry kibble......just mix it with a little bit of baby food chicken! |

| Hi, Have you tried the Nutro Puppy food? My puppy LOVES it...and she is a very picky eater. Oddly, she doesn't like the Nutro Ultra puppy, just the regular Nutro puppy (green label on can.) She loves it and since it is moist I don't have to worry too much about her water intake. I highly recommend you head out and get some and give it a try. Make sure you warm it up a little before she gets it. I'm hoping your sweetie perks up soon. Hang in there and keep us posted. Sophie sends puppy hugs your way....

| Bitsy, Thanks for the suggestion.......... Lil Bit is really having trouble chewing stuff..........I think part of it is her size and the other part may be teething..... She tends to keep "runny poops" when eating much canned foods.....I'm just having a hard time trying to find the right balance. Before I left this am I heated her some of the left over chicken/rice (I keep small portions frozen) and she ate it right up! She is a ball of energy at this moment...maybe a good time for a bath! |

| The regular blood tests the vets do don't check for liver problems. You need to ask your vet to do a bile acid test. The dog has to be fasted for 12 hours then blood is drawn, then the dog is fed and 2 hours later another blood draw is done. Normal counts for yorkies should be 25 or less, anything over that is an indication of some sort of problem. Most times if a reading is high, they will repeat the test later just to make sure, or do a different extensive test to determine what the problem is. |

| Hi Debi Lily almost shares a birthday wit Lil Bit -- and I am going through the same issues. She is terribly uncoordinate to the point I am worried she may hurt herself! She will run and pay NO attention to the upcoming blocade, then and slam right into it, ricocheting across the room! I think my first step might be to trim b/w her paw pads bc our hard wood floors are slippery, but I am at a lost, too! If you know if anything, please tell me!
