| Going away on vacation Last time my husband and I went on vacation, our Yorkie (Jam) got so upset and very sick (throwing up and diarrhea). We left him with my husbands parents who love him and give him tons of attention. Jam knows them pretty well too. After we left, he layed by the door for 2 days. I felt so bad and was crying the whole night before we left (not that best way to start a vacation). Does anyone give their Yorkie any medication to calm them down? I've heard that it's safe and if it makes sure that he doesn't get sick again, I'll try it next time we have to go away. Also, does anyone have any good vacation spots where they've taken their Yorkie with them? Thanks! |

| Sorry, no tips. I'm sort of in the same boat. You might want to post again in the traveling with yorkies section. Good luck. I know how it can hurt to see our babies get so upset that they get sick. My dh and I are thinking of buying a travel trailer and taking Betty Boop with us. I just can't bring myself to leaving her behind. She is SO attached to me. I know there are a lot of places that are pet friendly.

| Check out www.BringFido.com I've looked thru it, not used it, but this summer if we go on a trip I will. Good luck. I hate the thought of leaving Bella. |

| Would it be possible to have someone you trust come to your house several times a day to care for Jam? That way he would be in his own familiar surroundings. I don't know it this helps, just a suggestion. |

| We've had trouble with this same thing, and now every time we go on vacation we pay someone to come dog-sit at our home. I think the familiar surroundings really helps. The dogs still act mopey and wait at the door for us to come home, but they eat normal and don't have the upset stomachs they tend to otherwise.

| how about trying to build up to it before the vacation? let your husbands parents take him over night one week, then for two nights another and three nights another. that way he will see that you always come back and he will get used to being there. also, i use rescue remedy to calm dexter down when needed. you can buy it at any natural health store. i spray it on some treats and he gobbles it up. i use it on myself too for public speaking. |

| We are going on vacation in May and our Bella is going with us due to the same reasons! I've left her for a couple of days 2 different times and the first was at home with someone taking care of her and she wanted NOTHING to do with that and the second time was at my in-laws home and she wouldn't come out from under their kitchen table! So...we won't try that again! We drove last summer to Cape Cod and took her, she was great and it worked out perfectly. This time we are flying to Myrtle Beach (she will fly in her carrier under my seat) and I've booked a hotel that accepts dogs, I've researched it on tripadvisor.com and it gets great reviews. For me, this is the best way to go. I wouldn't relax on vacation knowing how she was previously for 2 days let a lone leaving her for 7! I have things I'm nervous about with taking her also though...will it limit us with activities having her along, will I dare leave her in the room when I need to in an unfamiliar place, BUT I think it will be better for us if I can manage it and be assured that she is fine. I'm lucky because my family understands and accepts this as what we need to do to have a vacation! I know how you feel though....you don't want them sad

| Leyla is flying out to Denver with me this summer. I won't go anywhere that I can't take her. Luckily, I live alone and don't have to "discuss" her care with anyone. We do what we please and go or don't go where we choose. I was supposed to work a Marlin tournament in the Bahamas this summer but will not do it as I won't put her into quarantine. The money would be nice, but she comes first. My family is insisting that I go west for a visit and they have been told that she will be with me. They are all dog people but they think giving her a dresser drawer, bathroom drawer and her own closet space here is a bit much. No sense of humor.... |

| Charleston, SC is a lovely, charming town that is very dog friendly. There is at least a B&B right in the downtown area that accepts dogs. Knoxville, TN is named the most pet-friendly city in the US. Key West, FL is very dog friendly as well. Pigeon Forge/Gaitlinburg, TN are both dog-friendly. Almost all KOAs allow pets in their cabins (located nationwide). We use Rescue Remedy for situations where our dogs might get worked up. |

| Dog/vacation I feel for you and your little dog. I never could leave my previous Yorkie as he got sick and pined if we left him, and so he went everywhere with us. I would get a Snoozer booster seat - they love it!!! A Sherpa carrier is also good to have I am slowly training my new adopted Yorkie to travel in his car seat by taking longer journeys each time and he is getting used to it now. Also getting him well house trained and being alone -mainly in his soft crate that he loves. Soon we hope he will be a happy traveler with us as our last beloved dog was. We are taking it slow as one bad experience could blow the whole plan. LOL. AAA has a book that names dog friendly hotels and places, and 'Pets on the Go' also had a travel guide for dogs. We were restricted somewhat by sticking to pet- friendly hotels, but discovered some very nice new places to stay and go. Good Luck and happy motoring! |

| Thanks everyone for their feedback! I think I do have Rescue Remedy somewhere and will try it. Fortunately, I think we found a solution. My brother-in-law has agreed to stay at our place while we travel to Rome in May. Jam really likes him and sees him often, and I agree, he will be in his own surroundings and will feel more comfortable. We're also blessed to have travelled in the car with him as soon as we got him, and he loves it! Finds it very relaxing and almost always falls asleep! Flying is another thing, we haven't tried that yet Kind of makes me nervous. So for now, I won't worry about that I heard that the W chain of hotels is dog-friendly so maybe that's an option in the future. If anyone ever travels to VT, we stayed at a lovely B&B in Manchester called the Reluctant Panther that is dog-friendly and beautiful! |

| I also use an in home sitter and find it is best for the dogs to be in their own surroundings. Another option is to look into a home boarding situation- where someone boards dogs in their home- if your yorkie is good with other small dogs it might help them to have something exciting to do if they have other dogs to play with- it will get their mind off of you being gone. Also it might help to get your yorkie more used to you being gone for short periods of time first- like sending him for half days at doggy day care- it is always a good thing to build up your dogs confidence so they can be okay when you are away. I did use rescue remedy once when I flew with my dog- It did help to calm him down a little so that might be an option for you.
