Yes Yorkies can get a lot bigger than the standard 7 lbs...My girl is 9.6 lbs I have a friend and her Yorkie is 10 lbs and there are a few YT members who have 15 lb Yorkies all full blooded...AKC standard for a yorkie is not to exceed 7 lbs...all good breeders try to breed to standard but sometimes you get one thats not standard...Back Yard Breeders will breed a 9 to 10 lb bitch and thats where you get the larger yorkies cause they don't breed to standard. thanks everyone for all of your help. Now onto my next question, I've never done the small dog thing before. None of my previous dogs weighed less than 75 lbs. I don't know of really anything different I should do with Harley. Any suggestions?

Use a harness not a collar...collar can cause CT...make room in your bed might have to move hubby out LOL and be ready to fall in love

Welcome to YT. I've got a 12.5 pound boy myself. I think Jackson (Britster's dog) is 15. The AKC standard says not to exceed 7 pounds, but they are still all Yorkie, just supersized .

The biggest thing to keep in mind with a smaller dog is that they still have a high nutrient need, but smaller stomachs. Feed the best quality food your guy will eat. These guys are highly energetic.

They are also more prone to certain things such as dental problems. Spend some time around here and you will learn a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Yep, Jackson ranges between 15-16lbs. I never know if the scale is off or what at the vets, but that's general weight. I honestly do not think he is mixed with anything else (except maybe Silky Terrier, which is pretty much genetically the same as a Yorkie with a bit different shaped body and personality) but I do not have papers on him.

See I had no idea what to get for food. We've always used Ol'roy Premium Nutrition with the bigger dogs. But for the first night he acted like he couldn't chew it and the next morning he wouldn't even touch it so we decided to buy him some different food with smaller and softer bites. Of course the time beign RIGHT before I got my check from work I was low on cash from buying all the toys and bedding and the vet bill of course, so we got him this food called Little Bites. I'd never even heard of it before. Is that a good brand or what would you suggest? I seem so novice....

There are lots of ongoing discussions about different brands and what works for different people. Check out the top sticky on premium brands, there are quite a few companies that will send you free samples while you are trying to figure out what works best.

The premium foods may seem more expensive at first, but if you figure in that they generally require a smaller serving size, they work out to be about the same as the other brands. For instance, Pedigree small breed recommends 1 1/4- 1 3/4 cups per day while Blue Buffalo small breed suggests 1/2 cup to 1 1/4 cup per day for the same size dog.

In the end though, it comes down to what your dog will eat.

Yorkies are also prone to things like pancreatitis. Avoid high fat foods and treats.

He's the double size of a ''normal'' yorkie, he's 6 kilo's !
He's very muscular, not too fat, just a healthy yorkie, he's 2 years old.
His mom is 3,5 kilos , and his dad is about the same (3-4 kilo's), all his brothers and sister are this big too (from 5-8 kilo's), just really big litter.
Fido has an overbite, ears down, is too dark colored and has a little bit curly tail (its suppose to be straight, like on a labrador or a pointer, or like an half moon).
He's perfect to me , just more to love, and if I go to a walk with a yorkie group , I know straight away what dog is my Fido, cause he's always the biggest

Food can be a debatable topic! But in general, I would stay away from anything that includes by-products, corn, wheat, soy, or corn gluten in the ingredients. Ideally, the first 2 ingredients should be a named meal, such as chicken followed by chicken meal.

I feed Orijen and Acana right now but if you're looking for something good quality but not quite expensive I'd look into Taste of the Wild (it's grainfree, and very good price, and lots of dogs do very well on this, you can often find it at hardware stores and Tractor Supply's, etc). Merrick makes a food called Whole Earth Farms that's VERY price friendly.

Basically I would stay away from anything you can buy at a grocery store, heck even most of the foods at Petsmart are pretty nasty. Check out Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings for some generic info, it can lead you in the right direction. Remember that these little guys don't cost a ton a feed anyways, so I feel it's important to find a high quality food. I buy a 5.5lb bag of Acana at $14.99 and it feeds my 15lb'er for about 6 weeks.

The largest one I have seen personally was 19 lbs of lean terrier. Mine are 12 and 13 lbs, and they are a great size for kids, very sturdy. Yorkies were bred down from larger terriers, so you if you get the right genetics together, you can get a "throw-back" to a larger size.
