Confused Feeling A Little Guilty.

Just wanted to share a little of my weekend with you guys:

Over the weekend, my boyfriend and I went to visit his family in San Jose. My boyfriend has a twin brother who has a 3 year old Silky Terrier and he and his wife are currently searching for a little yorkie pup. His wife found out that a certain breeder in their area would be doing an adoption event that weekend we were there at a doggy accessory store at a local mall so we agreed to go with them (Let me clarify that is was not a pet shop that sold any kind of live animal). When we got there, they fell in love with the cutest little guy ever. When asked about his price, the breeder just kept saying she would give a "crazy good deal" to whoever wanted him. There were four yorkies there total that day, two from the same litter, one from a different litter, and the one my bf's brother and wife fell in love with who also came from a different litter. Just hearing that they had so many different litters at one time made me a bit suspicious. What also made me confused was the fact that she was saying that the puppies were one price but when she walked away and her daughter came, the daughter said a dramatically higher price (for example: the one we all liked was originally $500 but when a different group asked, the daughter told them $900). When the breeder saw that my bf's brother and wife might actually buy him, she said she would sell the puppy for $350 cash with no papers or health guarantee. We could hear her muttering to her daughter "I am not coming home with puppies today...I have a new litter coming in that I need to make room for." My bf's brother didn't want to pass up on the deal (because that's a pretty crazy deal...) BUT the reason why he was going for so cheap was because he had, what the breeder called, a "spastic" thing about him. Meaning, he was always jittery. It wasn't because he was cold or anything, she just said he's always full of energy and just has these shakes to him. We eventually persuaded my bf's brother and wife not to get the puppy because I just found her too suspicious with all the comments she was making (it really seemed like she didn't care about them at all despite the fact that she kept saying, "These are my babies!").

I tried researching what could cause these "spastic" movements of his but came up with nothing. He was an adorable puppy with the most beautiful face I've seen...but something just didn't feel right about the situation and the breeder. I did do some research on her after I came home and found a sad review about her here on YorkieTalk so I do feel better for telling my bf's brother and wife that I didn't think they should purchase that puppy. But I still feel a little guilty because his wife was so in love with the puppy. She didn't mind that he was "special" and was willing to take extra care of him so I do feel bad about it but I just didn't think everything added up.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. Just wondering what you guys would have done if you were in my position? And if anyone here has a yorkie who is like the one we saw (jittery all the time)? I'm still so curious about what could be the cause for it. I'm thinking it's something neurological but I'm not sure.

IMO, you did the right thing. Obviously this was a byb, and someone who would sell her puppies like a petstore would. I wonder what the petstore's cut was. I don't consider it an adoption event, it was a puppy sale.

All those different litters, no papers, no health guarantee, and wanting to get rid of the puppies because more are on the way is horrid. Your instincts are great!

I am not sure of what it could have meant but you shouldn't feel guilty. You were only looking out for your friends and family. Maybe someone will come on and be able to help you figure out what it might have been.

You did the right thing in convincing them to walk away. It is very easy to fall in love with any puppy. A good breeder would never sell their puppies that way. That's pretty sad. I have no idea what could have been wrong with the puppy.

You might just have saved them from a lot of heartache. There's nothing fun about coming home and falling in love with your new puppy ~ only to find they have a terrible illness. Then there are terrible decisions to make . . . . maybe this wouldn't have been the case but . .

Sounds like this puppy had some health problems. Spastic movements? Doesn't sound good right off the top of my head.

You did the right thing, who knows what health problems he could have had. It makes me sad that some people are only in it for the money and just "wants to get rid of them" shame on her, i hope karma bites her in the a**.

To bad you couldn't find more info on her and report her, she needs to be stopped!

Thanks you guys. I should've also mentioned that she has had good reviews also but I still think the way she spoke about her dogs when she thought no one was listening was horrible.

I have no idea what it could be either. She said the vet said he's healthy and she said the father of that pup is her favorite dog but he's like that too. It didn't add up because she kept saying he wasn't a good dog to breed but she bred her "favorite dog" who she knew had the same thing as the pup.

did you by any chance go to valley fair mall? If so, I've seen this breeder's ad on kijiji and she had the puppies up for $1,000. I do agree that her puppies are adorable but if she has some shady business going on then people should be warned about it.

Yes it was Valley Fair Mall. She didn't go by collier ranch yorkies but by justmypup. The store's Facebook said it was collier ranch coming in so I don't know if she has several different names that she goes by but like I said things just don't add up when it comes to her.

hahahhaa....I bought Louie from KC at the Happy Go Lucky. Yeah, he gets super excited and he is a really eager little fella. Kelly is the nicest person and I find it hard to believe anyone would criticize her for offering them a good deal. He is a perfect 3lb with the prettiest face on a yorkie i ever saw. I'd be mad if I passed up a good deal too. I bought him for $500.00 because she was trying to go on vacation. She must have thought you were a really nice person to offer him to you for so low. I am part laughing at how silly you sound trying to be a martyr and how sad it is that you are so quick to judge and act self righteous. We've been going to this store for years and they host so many events for different rescues and some breeders that have license to show and sell legally. I have seen breeders come and go and Collier Ranch gets invited back again and again. They start to show those pups at 9 weeks and I see the same pups until they are sometimes 12 weeks. I go and admire about every two weeks but ordinarily i could never afford one of her precious puppies until now. She makes people sanitize to pet and shares a lot of very valuable information about dog care. For as long as they have been doing dogs, i can find few people that have bad things to say about them. Most breeders have at least half bad reviews. You know sometimes people exaggerate and are hateful for no reason at all. My Louie is one of the nicest and prettiest little fellas you have ever seen. Everyone stops me and wants to know where I got him. I think I bought him from an angel. She gave me papers, a contract, immunization records, vet check papers and a bag of food and a blanket and toy. I had to take him to the vet and get a vet check and if anything is wrong then she would have paid for any care. his stool was perfect and the vet says he is a premium puppy. He just gets excited and is very social. He does get kind of spastic when he was to give a kiss. this dog is my life and I am so grateful to the angel who sold him to me. They work hard to take such good care of those pups and deserve to make money too if they can. What is wrong with people being so hateful these days?

I'm new to this but i think even though you had her to walk away you did the right thing because without health guarantee and etc he may be very bad off and she might have been trying to use you for the money. You might have gotten him and the little guy not even made it to the vet. Don't feel bad they will find their yorkie and the one they find will have a beautiful soul!

I'm glad your Louie turned out to be a healthy happy pup. I'm sure if he was the one I was talking about in my original post, you'd be stopped everywhere by people going crazy over his adorableness. And I'm happy for you that she gave you the puppy's papers, vet check papers, etc because we were told that with the "deal" we would be given, it would only be the pup and nothing else.

In regards to your comment about trying to be a martyr and acting self-righteous, I never intended to do either. The title of the post was, "Feeling a bit Guilty" because I wasn't sure if I did the right thing or not by talking my boyfriend's brother and wife out of purchasing the puppy. I simply wondered how others would've reacted had they been in my shoes.

Anyways, please post pictures of Louie, I'm sure everyone would love to see him.

EmGo11 -- I think you did the right thing. I cannot see the difference in selling in that sort of venue and selling in a petshop or brokers shop. She was still selling to anyone who walked in. Pricing the same pup from $350 to $900 based on the conversation and customer is bizarre. Saying the dog was spastic and then not providing any sort of health guarantee would be enough to walk away no matter how cute the little fellow was. Saying she was not going home with puppies is pretty cold too -- most breeders that care have occasionally kept a pup for weeks longer than expected waiting for that right person to take them. A caring breeder is not that much in a hurry to "get rid" of pups -- they are more involved in finding a truly great owner to care for puppies they love. If someone is having so many litters that they have to go to this extreme to try to "make room" for the next litter, then they are not properly planning -- they are just going for quantity sales. What does that sound like?

Don't worry about a person making a very first post saying something to you in this thread. Many times when that happens it is the breeder themself trying to give themself accolades when they find there might be some criticism of them online. Not saying that is what this one is, could also be a friend or acquaintence but the liklihood of the very person that bought the exact same puppy you were talking about coming here and immediately posting in your thread (when they have never been here before) is remote at best. Most of these breeders do searches on a regular basis to see if they are getting negative feedback they can deny. Still, this might be someone that has come to know her over the years as she said. Surprised if she was that well known to the breeder, that she didn't get the $350 deal too.

No denying there are cute puppies that CAN make wonderful pets being sold in less than professional circumstances. There are many examples right here on YT. But most all of the owners say they would do it differently now that they know. I was one of those first time around. Fell in love with such a cute little yorkie and left glad to have gotten such a cutie for a "good deal." It was a sad long story....suffice it to say I did it much differently next time! You just don't feel good about supporting unprofessional sales of puppies. They are living things -- not a craft show item to be sold at "events."

EmGo11....you absolutely did the right thing! First off the pet store wasn't holding an adoption event....they were allowing a breeder to sell puppies. The only difference between the pet stores normal practice of just offering pups for sale, was to have a breeder there to peddle the pups. Secondly, if this pup was acting spastic, you can bet there is a reason for it and the issue most likely wasn't/isn't going to be inexpensive to treat, if it's possible to be treated.

Also, I agree with Debra....timetells is most likely "Kelly" or one of her friends. This happens on YT, the breeder is made aware of a critical post, comes on pretending to be a satisfied customer. It happens often enough that this was my very first thought when I read timetells' post.

In this case, I think the username is so appropriate because....lol... time will tell.

No matter why that puppy was shaking a respectful trusted breeder would not be selling puppies in front of a pet shop. I wouldnt buy one of her puppies or anything from that pet shop either.
