| Missing Katrina Yorkie named BARRY I am also working on a case of a missing Yorkie named Barry who belongs to a 81 yr old lady who lost him at the Superdome. She fell ill and a young girl fashioned a collar and leash from a bedsheet and tied Barry to a post outside the Superdome. The owner was taken away in an ambulance and that was the last time she saw Barry, and she desperately wants him back. She says Barry was one year old, almost all black, short hair and small. He may be a mix. If you see a Yorkie fitting that description on Petfinder up for adoption or with a rescue group please let me know. His owner just got out of the hospital and would so love to find her little Barry. Actually everyone, please be on the look out for Katrina Yorkies in general because many rescue groups took them and have not registered them or their pictures in the Petfinder Katrina found pets section. More than any other breed, Yorkies seem to have been lost in the system after being rescued.

| My aunt (who is as Greyhound/Doberman crazy as we are Yorkie crazy) saw a story on CNN, MSNBC, some news station about a lady who had a dog and either a 'ferret' or a 'parrot' that she had to leave behind when she evacuated for Katrina. (Not that I would evacuate without my pets, but they thought they were only going to be gone for the night....) They got to go back weeeeeks later to their house. The parrot/ferret did not survive, but from another room, her dog came running in...and it was a Yorkie!!! Weeks in a house by itself and it survived! Can you believe that? They took it to the vet who rehydrated it and said that other than losing some weight, he had a clean bill of health. No you tell me our little guys aren't tough! |

| Another I know of was found (named Spike) after WEEKS alone in the 2nd story of a house. When the rescue request came in I was really down because his chances were not good. BUT HE MADE IT! Many of the residents were forced to leave their pets on highways at the Superdome and convention center. They waded water and rode in boats to high ground only to be told by the authorities NO PETS ALLOWED on buses. They had to leave them in the care of the authorities and many pets are missing. Many are being reunited, but the Yorkie success rate is not good. Pets were to be logged in and transported to Gonzales, LA where they would be fostered until the owner claimed them. The foster system broke down with so many foster groups coming in and signing animals out and then adopting them out, ignoring that they were to be fostered only. All pets were to have pictures available on Petfinder Katrina Found pets section, but only one third of Yorkies have pictures with their record. In some cases, hoarders may have taken the dogs. In some cases the foster groups are not reputable, so the dogs are missing, stolen is another way to say it. Some groups post a Yorkie in Petfinder under Pit Bull for example in an attempt in my personal opinion to make it hard for the owner to find the Yorkie. I have spoken with foster groups who deny that they have a certain animal and someone representing their group did indeed sign paperwork signing the pets out in LA. Too, a large number of papers were ruined altogether in the Rita evacuation of the Katrina pet staging areas, so the paper trail is lost. Hope is not lost though. Most people truly loved their furbabies and they deserve to be reunited. When they left their flooded homes, they took their Yorkie only to have it taken away later.

| I dont think I could ever leave my animal behind...No matter how bad it got here... Me too! We would go together! I feel so badly for the old folks who needed help from others to save themselves and in Barry's case, I think he is out there somewhere. Someone has him as they do most all of the missing Yorkies. There are alot of purebreeds missing....I have seen pictures of beautiful Yorkies with full coat that are missing, and we know how much time is involved in keeping them in full coat, so some of the owners were very dedicated to their Yorkie. Sad situation, but hopefully we all learn from the disaster so that pets are included in all future evacuations!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Our local aspca has a bunch of animals they brought back from that area. They are adopting them out, not fostering. They've run at least one ad that I've seen with pet's pictures. There were 6 in this group, kitties, puppies, and some dogs. I didn't see any pure breeds. I did wonder if someone, somewhere was searching for their pet(s) I don't think anyone would consider searching for a pet "lost" in LA....up here in Virginia.

| This is one story that tells where some animals were taken. It doesn't say if there were any yorkies. Dogs and cats seek refuge in North Dakota after Hurricane Katrina JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Thirty-three dogs and 17 cats are among the newest refugees from Hurricane Katrina seeking homes in North Dakota. The animals were brought to the state this week from a shelter in Dothan, Ala. Jamestown residents greeted seven smaller, mixed-breed dogs and five cats when they arrived Wednesday. The dogs were walked, played with and fussed over. James River Humane Society Director Kaye John had put out a call on local radio stations for volunteers to help walk the dogs. More than 40 volunteers showed up. The refugees will stay at the James River Humane Society to be checked for minor medical problems and to be neutered or spayed before they are put up for adoption. The Minot animal shelter plans to take 10 dogs and 10 cats, and Central Dakota Humane Society in Mandan plans to take the rest. Sue Buchholz, the director of the Central Dakota Humane Society, and Janine Jacob, its former president, brought the animals from Alabama in a borrowed pickup and trailer and all the borrowed pet carriers they could find. "The hardest job was to pick who came with us," Buchholz said. One of the dogs, found in Hattiesburg, Miss., had a litter of puppies shortly after she arrived in Dothan. The puppies were big hits at the James River Humane Society when they got to Jamestown. A friendly, orange kitten called Pumpkin seemed ready to play even after 43 hours of travel. The shelter in Dothan has more than 400 animals, Buchholz said. "They had over 200 reunions (pets with their owners). They're really hardworking people down there," she said. Buchholz and Jacob said they were asked to make a side trip to New Orleans and get some animals that had been rescued off the streets by Mutt Shack, a group that picks up strays and takes them to a shelter. The two women took 13 dogs and 25 cats back to Dothan, and the Mutt Shack staff was out hunting new strays before the women even arrived. The shelter is at maximum capacity, the women said. "They're still finding animals (cats and dogs) on the streets and in homes," Jacob said. ON THE NET http://www.petfinder/katrina.com. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/12954639.htm
