This is one story that tells where some animals were taken. It doesn't say if there were any yorkies.

Dogs and cats seek refuge in North Dakota after Hurricane Katrina

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Thirty-three dogs and 17 cats are among the newest refugees from Hurricane Katrina seeking homes in North Dakota.

The animals were brought to the state this week from a shelter in Dothan, Ala.

Jamestown residents greeted seven smaller, mixed-breed dogs and five cats when they arrived Wednesday. The dogs were walked, played with and fussed over.

James River Humane Society Director Kaye John had put out a call on local radio stations for volunteers to help walk the dogs. More than 40 volunteers showed up.

The refugees will stay at the James River Humane Society to be checked for minor medical problems and to be neutered or spayed before they are put up for adoption.

The Minot animal shelter plans to take 10 dogs and 10 cats, and Central Dakota Humane Society in Mandan plans to take the rest.

Sue Buchholz, the director of the Central Dakota Humane Society, and Janine Jacob, its former president, brought the animals from Alabama in a borrowed pickup and trailer and all the borrowed pet carriers they could find.

"The hardest job was to pick who came with us," Buchholz said.

One of the dogs, found in Hattiesburg, Miss., had a litter of puppies shortly after she arrived in Dothan. The puppies were big hits at the James River Humane Society when they got to Jamestown. A friendly, orange kitten called Pumpkin seemed ready to play even after 43 hours of travel.

The shelter in Dothan has more than 400 animals, Buchholz said.

"They had over 200 reunions (pets with their owners). They're really hardworking people down there," she said.

Buchholz and Jacob said they were asked to make a side trip to New Orleans and get some animals that had been rescued off the streets by Mutt Shack, a group that picks up strays and takes them to a shelter.

The two women took 13 dogs and 25 cats back to Dothan, and the Mutt Shack staff was out hunting new strays before the women even arrived. The shelter is at maximum capacity, the women said.

"They're still finding animals (cats and dogs) on the streets and in homes," Jacob said.
