| Hot Weather . . .Learn From My Mistake Last night I had a huge scare . . .I took the furbutts out for a quick walk in the front of my house . .we live on a corner so I took them down to the stop sign and back . . .no more than a quick 6-7 minute outside potty break. Thing is . . Rhianna puts all her effort into putting on her harness and literally bunny hopping the entire time . . .she loves being outside and she really overexerted herself . . .We went back in and she was panting up a storm . . .I tried to give her water to cool her down . . .it was around 85 out and not too oppressive . . but the heat really affected her . . .we have central a/c so I took her into my bedroom and onto the bed to try to get her to cool off . . .nothing worked . . she started to seize . . . I literally was trying to keep calm . . .I yelled for hubby to get the car ready with the a/c and that we were going to the vet . . . by the time we got there, the seizure had stopped. The vet took some bloodwork and she said that her levels were fine. Her temp was a bit elevated ... and she was slightly dehydrated . .the vet thought that she seized because of the stress that was put on her when we went for a walk along with the temps . . .the vet advised me just to keep her in the a/c and to only go potty briefly in and out. I just wanted to put this out there because I almost lost my girl because of my stupidity. I never thought a quick walk would be so devastating . . So please learn from my mistake . . .I feel like such a bad mom . . .

| The whole tone of your email and your quick actions prove that you are not a bad mom. We all make mistakes and this is an easy one to make; who would think that a six minute potty walk could have such an effect in 85 degree weather. Thanks for sharing and serving as a reminder to the rest of us. I am really glad that there was a happy ending to this post.

| You certainly weren't stupid. Your quick thinking prevented things from getting much worse. Here's a great article on heatstroke - what to watch out for and how to handle it. Heatstroke (Hyperthermia) in Dogs |

| Thank you so much for posting this. You don't think about such a short time having such a serious affect. You are definitely not a bad mom!

| You certainly are not a bad Mum, the UK weather is normally acceptable for our pets, but we have had some hot weather recently. My three usually go out twice a day for a mad run over the park for half an hour, they lasted only 15 mins in the heat before they were panting like mad! Our police are always advising people about leaving dogs in their cars in hot weather, co's people forget how fast ther heat can affect us and our weather is nothing to the heat in US Thanks for this reminder and sharing |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so glad she is ok. That's a great reminder. Also, my dog's only go out back on the grass but Pixie had LP surgery and I needed to walk her for short periods of time. The other day I thought I would take her on the asphalt driveway. Luckily I felt it before I put her down on it. It was near 90 degrees that day and the asphalt was burning.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Thank you for being so open and honest in your post. It's so very hot here that I worry about the effect of the heat on my Yorkie. I've already lost one dog to the extreme temperature of a Texas summer in my lifetime and NEVER want to make that mistake again. That particular dog was also a "puller" and I learned too late that all I had to do to reduce the exertion was get a "no-pull" harness. Just imagine you and I hopping all the way to the corner! You sound like a great Mom. No one is perfect and I'm so glad your story turned out to have a good outcome. These little animated dolls are such a delight and so worth the protective nature that is required to raise them. When I think how blessed I am to have this opportunity, I am skipping in a circle! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Glad to hear she is ok. you are definitely not a bad mom. No one would expect a short pee break walk would have that effect, even in 85 degree weather. What you did when you got back inside proves you are a great mom. You saw she was hot and stressed and you tried to make her comfortable and cool her down. Even with the seizure, you kept your cool and got her to the vet. You did a great job, and did nothing wrong by taking her outside for those few minutes. This thread, while an emotional wreck for you, is a great lesson for everyone else. Every dog is different and the heat effects some more then others. Another note, since she gets so excitable by just putting on her harness maybe you can try putting it on at various times of the day and NOT taking her for a walk. Ignore her crazy antics and walk away. when she calms down, wait a few more minutes, and then take the harness off. By doing this she might stop being so reactive to the harness because it doesn't always mean she's gonna go outside for a walk.
