| Thank you so much for this thread. I do wait until the evening to walk my doggies, but even then it is still hot. I will be much more careful in the future. Glad you baby is okay. ~Joanne~

| Question I'm so glad that she's O.K. you proved to be not only a good mom but a quick and great rescuer as well. Here's a question to everyone: I have my Yorkies inside for one week due to extreme heat. Inside we have a temperature of 73 and outside 95 plus I try to play with them as much as I can in order to drain there energy, but as you all probably know already it's not enough. Any suggestions on any kind of indoors exercise that will substitute there walk, because it's going to be very hot this week as well and I will not risk taking them outside Maria |

| We took Ringo and Lucy for a short walk last evening. I remembered your post and ended up carrying Lucy for a good portion of the walk. She still got out and about; but I didn't let her overdo it - it was very humid here. Still thinking I might need to get a stroller for her at times; she loves to go with my Westie on a walk but he can go so much further than her. Of course, she wears herself out by pulling, dancing all around in circles; etc.; so I made sure I ddn't let that happen. |

| Thank you for sharing this with us. Our temperatures are in the mid 90's right now and to get worse this week. High humidity also. And have an air quality alert for today for people that have asthma and respiratory problems. I try not to stay outside very long on days like this, even for myself. So, I can only imagine how bad it must be for our little dogs. I get so upset seeing how some people will take their dogs with them on days like this and keep them in their car, even for a few minutes. Don't these people realize, what could happen to their dogs? Would they do this with a human baby? My guess is NO! So, why do this to their little dog? Some people just don't think! I would rather take my little dog home before leaving them in a hot or cold car, if it is not somewhere where I can take my dog inside with me. |

| My experience is still fresh in my mind and the weather here today and for the next few days is forecast to be in the upper 90's and high humidity. When I got up this morning, it was around 68 at 6:30am and I had them do their potty right in the backyard. Now they are in for the day, with pee pads (in case they really need to go) and we won't go back in the yard till dusk. The a/c is cranking, the fans are going and the shades are lowered . . .I feel like I'm living in a fort . . .I probably am being overly cautious . . .but I just can't let that ever happen again . . .

| Thanks for sharing this with us. I think I can get very dumb with my dogs and this is a good reminder(not that you were, infact you were more alert than I would have been) The temperature is really high here in Rome, as I see it is in the New England area. Summer I guess. I took Pippo to the local dog show on Saturday and lost my car. We wandered around the scorching streets for 20 minutes before I found it. He survived, but reading yours I realize that I could have lost him. Never again! Thanks. |

| Thank you so much for posting this! Along with everyone who has posted here, i don't think you were a bad mom at all! In fact, your posting this has shown me what I SHOULD do if my dog is suffering from heat stroke. I would however like to post a few tips that I've learned over the years dealing with dogs in hot weather. 1) Take your dog for his/her walk in the shade. The trails where I walk my dogs are through a heavily wooded area, and the ground is MUCH cooler because the trees form a canopy over the trail. The same is true for a sidewalk with lots of tall trees. Then your dog can get exercise and still stay cool. 2) If you HAVE to leave your dog in the car, even for a few minutes, leave the windows cracked for a breeze, leave plenty of water, and I found a small battery powered air conditioner that actually keeps the backseat pretty comfortable. They sell them at Target and they are only about $60! Since it runs on batteries you don't have to worry about leaving your vehicle running or draining your battery. 3) Try to have a spot in your house that is cool for the dogs to lay down. This last week it has been in the 90's and boo has spent a lot of time laying on the tile in the bathroom. Not only are the shades closed to block the sun, but the smooth tile doesn't hold on to heat like the carpet does. If you only have carpet, even a little vinyl placemat from the dollar store will be a refreshing spot for your little dog. 4) if it's hot outside, but there is a breeze, you might try taking your dog out to lay in the shade for some fresh air. My dogs love going outside and laying on the cool grass under the tree in the backyard, especially when it's humid out and the air inside is so stifling. 5) When it's really hot out people like to eat ice cream right...well, try making your yorkie a chicken popcicle. I take some organic, no salt added chicken stock and put it in an ice cube tray. Boo LOVES it! and it helps cool him down. These are a few of the things I do to try and keep my dogs comfy when it's hot out. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe we can share them and keep all of our babies cool this summer! |
