How stressful it would be on an 8 week old puppy to fly across the country with it?

The puppy that my mom was going to get has been sold, even though my mom was interested in him first. Anyways the guy that bought him is taking Blaze (he was prenamed) and flying across the country back to Newfoundland, and I'm just wondering how stressful that would be on a puppy thats only 2 months old. The breeder is a friend of my moms and she said if my mom really wanted him, then she would tell the guy no. I keep telling her to do that but she won't. Anyways any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Pippin was really looking forward to getting a baby brother.

My yorkie came from ireland, when I bought my yorkie I had no idea what I was thinking,, wish I knew then what I knew now, I thought my breeder was a breeder but she was a broker, i have read many nightmare stories on here about the place I bought my dogs, anyway he was fine right off the plane but he was a little bit older than 8 weeks. My dog flew all the time as a puppy and loved it, in the cabin had his own seat of course but it was never a problem. He still loves 2 fly

8 weeks is too young to be separated from mom to begin with. I will admit, Kaji was shipped to me, he was a year old and we didn't have any problems. BUT, I will NEVER do it again. We've had the opportunity to fly together, and that seemed stressful enough since I was near and he still couldn't be with me (under the seat). I broke to the rules and had him on my lap for most of the flight. But if that was a bit stressful, imagine going in cargo? I think he was peed on by other animals in cargo. His back smelled so bad, but the shredded newspaper wasn't soiled.

In retrospect, I wish I hadn't done it. It just sounds so horrible now.

If they are flying in cabin with you (or someone else) I dont see a problem with flying a dog. If you are talking flying in cargo hold, I really don't like that. I did have a dog flown to me this way once and would never do it again, I think it was a really bad idea. However, if you are having a dog flown to you or with you under the seat, I would still wait a little longer. 8 weeks is young, at depending on the length of the flight, could just be too much to handle at that age.

Pippin was 7 weeks when I got him and he was shipped but it was only a 2 hour plane ride and he had the company of the puppy that a good friend of mine was getting. I feel bad for Blaze, we were really hoping that he would join our family. Pippin is 3 and gets lonely sometimes when we're all out of the house. It would have been nice for him to have someone to play with. I was just wondering how stressful it would be on a puppy that small.

It's not us that are flying with the puppy it's the guy that he was sold too even though my mom told her friend who is the breeder that we wanted him. I'm pretty sure he's flying in the cabin with the owner but if he's not in an airline approved kennel then he'll have to go cargo, at least I think thats how air canada works. The flight is long because there are no direct flights from Alberta to Newfoundland (I've flown that route a few times in my life). Who knows how long the guy will be sitting in an airport waiting for a plane and what not. I'm just scared for this little guy and would rather have him with us in our family where he will still be able to visit his mom and dad.

It's not just the plane ride though. The flight itself, may be two hours, but they're on the plane much longer than that. They get loaded first, then they sit there on the plane until all the stuff and people are loaded, and then they take off. When they finally get there, they wait to get unloaded, get processed, and then wait some more for the new owner to come pick them up from baggage claim. I don't know about you, but to me that seems like an awful lot of waiting.

I'm not sure how stressful flying an eight week old puppy is for it, but an eight week old Yorkshire Terrier puppy should be with it's mother. The YTCA recommends that a yorkie stay with the mother a minimum of 12 weeks. Laws exist for all breeds; they don't take into account the special needs of the toy breeds. Mother teaches important socialization skills, including inhibition of the biting reflex, and beginning potty training. Pet owners who have purchased their dogs too young have more difficulty with potty training and biting. Read this site for more information on WHY it's important to only support those breeders who follow the 12-week rule. Why do Maltese puppies need to be 12 weeks old before going to a new home??

I guess then in this case the situation is out of your hands. It's sad to see a breeder releasing a pup too soon, and then have it shipped. You could talk to the breeder and tell them the importance of staying with mom and learning doggy etiquette but it's up to the breeder to decide.

Thats exactly why I wish my mom would tell her friend that we want him. She already told my mom that if we want him then she'll tell these other ppl no.

Neither one of you should buy from that breeder, why support breeders who don't do what's right?

My mom works with this breeder and their actually pretty good friends. My mom sent me a text and she said that they were talking and she knows that flying across the country with Blaze will be mighty stressful on him and she said the new owner was going to drop by her house to see Blaze tonight and she was gonna advise him that traveling isn't that great of an idea and she's gonna ask him if he really wants the puppy cause someone else is interested.
