| ![]() My understanding is that Terriers tails were docked so that they could be used as a handle to pull them out of (rat) holes. Being shorter you would be forced to grab up closer to the body and wouldn't be painful. Maybe I am wrong, but I heard that a long time ago. ![]() |

| ![]() I've read about larger dogs whose tails were originally docked because the dogs could cause themselves injuries. For example, poodles that were used to hunt would get burrs and stickers stuck in their long tails. I read one story in particular about a doberman pincher who hadn't had his tail docked. When his owners would come home, he'd stand in their narrow entry way and wag his tail so hard that he caused it to bleed badly by whacking it against the walls. Anyway, I highly doubt a long tail is a hazard for a small dog like the Yorkie! So yup, I'd love to see them outlaw it here or at the very least not encourage the tail docking or force it as a "standard". -C

| ![]() My Bella has a tail also.I live in Canada and vets are not allowed to dock tails anymore. I love Bella's tail. Her tail is beautiful. It is curled up over her back and fans out. I actually prefer the yorkie with a tail now. I will try to upload a photo but I have not had much luck in the past |

That is right, it was to keep the dog safe for it's job, but most breeds don't do a job anymore, so docking is useless. Ears are the same. Last edited by Grendel; 06-20-2011 at 05:17 PM. | |

| ![]() my little Peppermint has her full tail and i really love it! I can't imagine cutting a tail at 6 months...it would kind be like cutting off a human finger, no? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() Hey sweetie! Regardless of whether it's humane or not, I think that the yorkies look SOOOO cute with their tails! My Gia was the only survivor of her litter, and they didn't think she was going to make it either, so they didn't want to dock her tail and put her under extra stress. The breeder told me that if I wanted to have it docked, then I should do it when I got her spayed. However, once I got Gia and saw how BEAUTIFUL her little tail was, I was hooked! It's adorable and so cute to watch her wag it playfully! ![]() |

YT 1000 Club Member | ![]() Sometimes there may be extenuating circumstances on why a breeder didn't dock a tail or remove dew claws. In my case Peppermint was too little and had a little trouble at first with getting enough milk. The vet and I both agreed that to do her tail would surely cause a setback or kill her. Her sisters did get their tails docked because that is what is required for the show ring. I also have Dante and Leo who have their full tails and I love both looks.

| ![]() It's considered an amputation at this age. Which can be done, they are put to sleep as for any type surgery...but it would ache afterwards I would imagine...at least for a couple weeks. I don't know this as a fact, but I would think by 6 months, like a cat to some degree, it's balance is effected by having a tail - when they are docked at a couple days old that's all they ever know thus unaffected by it. I wouldn't dock at 6 months of age and I do think the long tails can be cute IF they hold them up. I've seen a lot of yorkies that don't hold their tails up and if those stubs were long it just be dragging in the mud (so to speak). It might end up with a bare spot at the end and not be so cute. But in the end, it's your choice.

My bailey has her tail as well....I didn't even know that most yorkies have theirs docked, until i brought her to the vet, the first day i had her....when the lady behind the desk said "Aww i've never seen one with a tail...how cute, it makes her unique!" LOL.....I couldn't imagine her without one!!

Did you not have peppermint's tail dock because you got her in Canada? I see Dex's tail is docked.. they both are so very cute!! I agree it doesn't really matter either way.
