It's considered an amputation at this age. Which can be done, they are put to sleep as for any type surgery...but it would ache afterwards I would imagine...at least for a couple weeks. I don't know this as a fact, but I would think by 6 months, like a cat to some degree, it's balance is effected by having a tail - when they are docked at a couple days old that's all they ever know thus unaffected by it.
I wouldn't dock at 6 months of age and I do think the long tails can be cute IF they hold them up. I've seen a lot of yorkies that don't hold their tails up and if those stubs were long it just be dragging in the mud (so to speak). It might end up with a bare spot at the end and not be so cute.
But in the end, it's your choice.
