tail not docked how many of you have yorkies with the long tail? can you post a pic please. I'm trying to decide if I want to get my dog's tail docked or not. it has a curl on it, sort of like a pug's tail. I just got her a couple of days ago and I'm really undecided what to do, she is 6 months old and the breeder did n't want to get it done, she thought it was cruel. Also dew claws were not removed.:( |
I would NOT dock your dogs tail now... it should be done when they are a few days old or not done at all. I feel the same way about dew claws, my oldest had his done by the breeder... the youngest did not and I did not remove them either... as long as they are attached securely and you keep them cut short, they shouldnt cause an issue. |
1 Attachment(s) You cannot dock the tail anymore, it's much too late. It must be done when they are 3-5 days old. The full tail can be very cute! Several members here have the full tail. Also in the UK no one does it anymore. Here's a pic of Missy (Uni's bff :)) and Katie. What a cute flag! |
It would seem to me if it's not done within the first few days, it would be cruel. My Charlie wasn't docked. I'm not sure why he wasn't. But when I got him, I didn't know that that was the norm. He's gorgeous with his tail. (Sorry, no idea how to upload pictures.) |
1 Attachment(s) Woah, no way should you dock at 6 months old. If you're not a dog breeder and not showing, it's simply cosmetic. He would have to be under to dock it... just seems pointless to me. Jackson has a full tail and I love it! |
I agree with the others, the tail should only be docked the first week, but some of our members have had dewclaws removed when their dogs were neutered. You might want to ask the vet about this, dewclaws have been known to catch on things and the tear can be quite painful. If the vet doesn't think it necessary, make sure you keep the dewclaw nail clipped when you get the other nails clipped, as the nails can grow too long and curve into the skin. |
2 Attachment(s) I definitely wouldn't dock it now...she's way too old. Sophie still has her tail and I can't imagine having it docked...I love her tail so much! The first picture is a few weeks after our horrible grooming experience in February, but it shows her little tail. The second picture is her the other day (her tail hair is still growing back after the bad groom, so it is a little puffy) with her new kitten sister, Libby! |

1 Attachment(s) Pepper has a long tail, and I love it! Couldn't imagine him without one. :animal36 |
My Pepper's tail's also still there, somehow I just can't imagine him without it! Here in South Africa it's against the law to dock their tails. |
OHHH its so cute both of the last posters have a dog named pepper and they both have long tails and they both are sooooooo adorable!! :) BTW pepper is such a cute name!! |
I love long tails on Yorkies! I wish the U.S. would adopt the same policy as some of those overseas, and make it illegal to dock tails and ears...Also I would feel so sorry for the little guy, having it done at his age :( |
I have a Biewer and they do not dock the Biewer tail. I wish it were illegal here too for the Yorkies, it just seems inhumane to do something that is simply cosmetic and has no purpose other than looks. It would be very painful for you to have it done at this point. It is usually done when the pups are just 2-3 days old. |
No a tail should not be docked this late. |
Rizzo still has his tail (I live in Europe) and he is perfect with it. Since I'm from the US it took me as a suprise when I saw his tail, but I love to see that tail waggin'. |
