What would you do? (Sorry.. it's bit long) I was walking Magnus this evening and along the way, a car pulled in front of the house (I assume it's her house). Magnus still being a puppy and haven't been socialized too much is pretty much interested in EVERYTHING. So he watch as two dogs that jumped out of the car. The first thing that came to my attention was that neither dog had leashes on. We were across the street from them, I thought it'd be safe enough to let Magnus just watch. But I wasn't TOO comfortable so decided to keep an eye on them myself while making sure my pup wouldn't start barking at them either. I noticed one of the dog looking straight at us and I didn't like his/her stance. Looked a lot like the form a dog would take before launching an attack. So I was about to move along when in a blink of an eye, that dog was sprinting across the street coming straight towards us. Well, not so much me but Magnus. It was obvious outrunning that dog was not possible so I grabbed Magnus to keep him safe in my arms. The dog was able to grab one of Magnus's hind paw but I smacked his nose to get it loose. Luckily, Magnus didn't suffer any injuries. But that dog kept trying to get to my pup. I ended up having to lift Magnus over my head to make sure he was safe as well and tried to keep my back towards the attack while being tugged down by the other dog. The owner (I think the dog that attacked us wasn't hers) came rushing over and grabbed the dog and apologized profusely. After checking Magnus, I said it was okay but if she was even a split second late, I would've kicked that dog really hard or something as s/he was a pretty big dog and I think I'm lucky s/he didn't actually hurt me during the ordeal. What would you guys do in that sort of situation? I guess a better question would be what are you suppose to do? I don't want to hurt anyone whether it be human or animal but I'd be damned if I let anything happen to my little runt. Last edited by Magnus; 04-01-2010 at 09:04 PM.

| As horrible as this might sound, I bet I'd do the same thing. I'd grab Kaji with one arm, hold him over my head and scream my head off for help. If no help came and I was being overwhelmed by two dogs, I too would kick them away. It's not something that I would want to do, but in the moment I'm sure I'd react before thinking. I know Kaji thinks he's a German Shepherd, but the reality is he isn't and a big dog could rip him apart if they wanted to. We have yet to run into a mean big dog, and I allow for him to socialize with big dogs. He loves it. I think it's pretty easy to tell when a dog is being friendly, whether big or small, or when a dog is aggressive. I had to hold Kaji up over my head once and the "attackers" were two medium/small dogs. (my guess is they were no bigger than 30 lbs) The whole time the owner watch and passively told them to stop. I just kept walking with Kaji over my head until I got out of the little dog area of that doggy park.

That is such a scary situation! We have had a very large (85lbs +) unneutered male Pit Pull running around our complex all day and I have been terrified to take Aiko outside because everytime I do, he comes sneaking up and I can hear him growl. He hasnt attacked yet, but I think its because I am 6 ft tall and have been in a huge winter coat so I look big. But its scary to think how one bite could end her life! I called animal services but so far he is still out there...

attacks on our babies It's finally getting plenty warm to take Belle out walking. We loved to a townhome complex and I swear everyone has a dog. The people across the street have a rottweiler and don't always have him on a leash. Belle is the typical "little dog with a big dog attitude" she thinks she can take on everything. My husband is a cop and he bought me a hand held devise that is usually used to stop dogs barking but we tried it on the neighbors dogs when they were'nt looking and it hurts their ears and they back away. I will be carrying this with me. They also make a dog spray like pepper spray (mace) that works on dogs. The mace police on people doesn't work on dogs. We have an 85 pound Lab that I've thought about taking walking with us but then there is a chance of a dog fight as he is very protective of me and his "sister". The one bad thing about kicking at big dogs is that if you kick out and they get ahold of your leg they could pull you down. My husband says dogs that are trying to attack like that need to be reported and the owner named. There are leash laws almost everywhere and leash or no leash, owners are responsible for the control of their dogs. My husband says you can also buy small stun guns that fit in your hand. They can protect both you and your little ones.

| agressive dogs I just watched a show about pit bulls and their getting into fights. It was scary that they don't let go unless they are basically picked up by the hind legs to throw them off balance then pulled apart but not without some pretty major damage. I replied to another reader below here with some ideas but being married to a cop I'm always taught about being safe so my husband insists that I carry a knife with me. It's a pocket knife, not really big or anything and I absolutely would not use it unless I have no other choice against a large aggressive dog. I would not hesitate to save my little girl or if my life was in danger also. Those dogs that are that aggressive are not happy loved dogs. It's 99% the owners fault. Now days people want big strong dogs to protect them and their family and home but they have no clue how to correctly train them or handle them. Those dogs are a walking time bomb! So I went on and one but it's a sore subject for me to see these beautiful dogs being treated as a killing machine. Quote:

pepper spray If you read my post you'll see that pepper spray does not work on dogs. It has to be one especially for dogs, mail carriers carry them. You can find them on the internet search under like "pepper spray for dogs". Also if you are carrying the same one for a few years, it may not be any good anymore as they lose their potency. I get a new one every couple of years. My husband has been reading over my shouler (must be a cop thing) and he asked me to tell the women to please be aware of your surroundings at all times, if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't

wasp spray My husband isn't sure about wasp spray but says those cans are usually pretty big to carry. Might work but we just aren't sure.

I knew the pepper spray has an expiration date , I usually replace them before they expire. You are rite about the size of the wasp spray but the idea of the spray ( streem ) distance is what I like. You don't have to let them get so close before you can gettum, Lol. Actually my mom works for the PD here and one of the cops told her about it. I'm going to find out where he heard about it and how does he know if it works. Might just have to get a bigger fanny pack.

You can get the dog deterrent at Petsmart for around $10. The idea behind wasp spray is that it's very accurate for quite a distance,I believe it also blinds either human or animal- at least temporarily but as someone has already mentioned, could you carry a can that size, handle a leash & probably poop bags too?

I believe I'd kick the dog too to protect my little one. Our neighbour has a bigger dog who is very unfriendly. I always make sure she's in the house when I take Sandy out for a walk.

That happened to me on a fairly deserted trail and someone suggested that I get a loud whistle. That would attract other people to help and possibly scare away the dogs. I think I'm going to find one - along with that doggie pepper spray. It's very scary when that happens to you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to look into the pepper spray and that hand held bark stopper thing. I had something similar happen before but that was partly my fault. I should have distanced ourselves from that dog. That time seeing the owner having a him/her on a leash I assumed she'd have him under control. I learned you should NOT assume anything safe when it comes to big dogs unless you know they're friendly. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty strong and sturdy but being only 5'2" and having the dog be able to get his/her paw up on my shoulder to get to Magnus was scary. At one point, I think I felt the paw on the back of my head. I'll be walking that route again mainly b/c that's where one of my sister lives and that's the route we always take. I'll be sure to take something to protect ourselves with till I get something more permanent.
