| Walking off leash?? Hi - just wondering if anyone regularly walks their Yorkies off leash. I haven't done this since Darwin was really young until today. He was really good and seemed to enjoy himself compared to being on the leash all of the time. I worry about other dogs and cars but it was fun letting him run with us. He seems to have a real conscious and usually comes when he's called. Love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks! |

| He "usually" comes when called? Wow - you're brave I could never let my girls off leash. Actually, I'm so paranoid that they hardly leave their stroller or my arms when we're out in public, but there is NO way I'd have them off leash EVER. It's mostly because of my concern about other dogs harming them. I had a boxer go after Missy once. If she hadn't been wearing her harness and leash, I am positive she wouldn't be with me anymore. I had to yank her straight up and into my arms to get her out of the other dogs reach. She was franticly trying to get away from the boxer, there's no way I could have just bent down and pick her up. The whole situation was way too chaotic. Maybe I'm overly protective, but I just can't take those chances with my furbabies. They mean the world to me.

| I have. We use to like in a condo community, which was fenced in and full of little doggies. Kaji ALWAYS comes when called, and he also knows the "not too far" command so that was never an issue. He had so many doggie friends there, and he was never allowed to go out alone. He was always in my sight and when were out it would be at least 2 humans. We don't have a fenced yard so outings like this was the only time he had to let that pent up energy out. It was a safe neighborhood there so I allowed occasional off leash stroll, and the romp with his doggie friends when all the mommies where there to help keep watch.

i think small dogs run when they get scared. maybe not all of them, but i know that milu will run if a big dog scares her. she will try to run to me if possible, but mostly i know she just want to get away from the big dog. so if she is off leash, she might just take off due to fear. there are info. out there if you are interested in training your dog to walk with you off leash. but one thing i do know is that they have to come to you 100% of the time when called before you can start training them off leash. not 99% but 100% of the time! this is VERY IMPORTANT!!! my personal opinion is that yorkies are too small to walk around off leash, because they do need protection from predators and aggressive dogs. i personally would feel stressed having her off leash, i just rather be safe. you can always take your dog to a dog park or puppy social, it's pretty safe in those environments if you want them to run around off leash.

| We have a large fenced back yard where Sophie can run full tilt and that is the only time Sophie is off leash. I would be scared to death to let her off leash anywhere else because they can be so unpredictable and distracted when seeing a squirrel, another dog or even something like a leaf blowing down the street. It would only take a second for tragedy to strike

| In a fenced in yard and supervised is ok. Anywhere on the street, I would say PLEASE DON'T. I have heard and seen many well behaved and trained dogs walk perfectly with their owners. They know their commands well....until the loud sound of a motorcycle, car horns, loud truck or another dog that is not well behaved comes charging to your Yorkie. That fun moment is not worth all the heartache you will suffer if you can't grab your furbaby in time. I don't mean to be a downer but its better to be safe and paranoid with your furbabies. Gen |

| I let Scruffs off leash at parks (unless they are near a street). There's this park that's almost fully fenced in by my house and I let him off there. He likes to sniff and run around. We don't have stray dogs in my area (well, I've never seen one, and I look out for them!). Lots of people let their dogs off leash at this park but mostly it is a quiet park and no one else is there when I go. I love letting dogs run off leash, especially at beaches and hiking trails (though all trails around here require leashes so I can't!).

| My yorkie Chiara was not on the leash when she spooked and decided to run into the street and attack the approaching car. The driver heard the screams to stop and saw us waving at her - she didn't stop and Chiara was killed instantly. I will NEVER let any of my furbabies off the leash. - IMHO

YT 2000 Club Member | Nope.. they are leashed....I live out in the middle of nowhere, my property is surrounded by a "fence" of rows of pine trees, and I wouldnt think of having them off a leash.... they try to chase, leaves, birds, baby rabbits and butterflies, while on the leash I couldnt imagine what would happen if they werent...its just something Im not comfortable with.. but I do see it all the time with other people..

I agree completely. I hope the op was not serious. No, you're not overly protective...you're a good yorkie mom.

I'm so sorry about Chiara. When I was a little girl I saw our wirehaired terrier, who slipped out the front door when someone came in, struck and killed by a car. It stays with you for life .

Of course I was serious, I have only had big dogs before Doberman and Great Pyrenees mix. I live in a small town, right now we have snow banks built up which is the only reason I felt safe letting our pup off the leash. He was off for a total of 5 minutes while he ran back and forth from me to my daughter. This is a forum for information isn't it?? I appreciate the information that was given, reasons why people say it isn't safe, etc. but when someone new to the Yorkie world writes in, maybe people can offer information instead of the fast judgement which is very easy to do - I guess it empowers some but it kind of ticks others off. | |
